Now It Is Evident The Goverment Is Committed To A Register Of Children Not In School Which Will Be Followed By Assessments And Monitoring

I’m actually astonished that there isn’t a register of children being educated at home.

I wondered why none currently exists, which took me to:

lordslibrary.parliament.uk/elective-home-education-time-for-a-compulsory-register/

Can you expand on why you feel it would not be a good idea to have some oversight regarding HE children?

MrsHookey · 10/11/2021 09:33

I would prefer a register. I worry about some kids dropping off the radar and being vulnerable to abuse, like that boy in Wales who was neglected by his parents and died of scurvy.

I am sure there are many parents out there doing sterling work, while there are other people neglecting their children and claiming they home educate. Someone surely needs to check that children are actually being home educated.

Redshoeblueshoe · 10/11/2021 09:34

I agree with the first 2 posters. Isn't it a child protection issue ?

Gottasinggottadance · 10/11/2021 09:35

I think a public register could be really helpful at ensuring vulnerable children don't fall off the radar.

WakeUpLockie · 10/11/2021 10:16

Why so many capital letters? I definitely agree with a register from a safeguarding standpoint.

I couldn't have put it better myself.

It's a safeguarding issue, and I'm surprised anyone would be against it.

@WakeUpLockie

Because I copied and pasted.

Actually every child who has ever been found abused under the guise of home ed was already known to social services so a register is redundant. It’s just encroaching on basic human rights. No problem if that isn’t an issue for you. It definitely is for me because I know it won’t stop there.

Not signing that. Not sorry.

MrsSkylerWhite · 10/11/2021 10:22

No. You ought to be registered. Why wouldn’t you want to be?

Sleepinghyena · 10/11/2021 10:24

Yabu. There definitely should be a register.

ImUninsultable · 10/11/2021 10:26

There should be a register. Wont be signing that.

Viviennemary · 10/11/2021 10:26

Sorry I totally disagree.

Kentuckycarby · 10/11/2021 10:26

Not signing yours but may sign a pro-register one. I think it’s a good idea

Hoppinggreen · 10/11/2021 10:26

Why wouldn’t you want one?

heldinadream · 10/11/2021 10:27

A register seems such a good idea. And copying and pasting doesn't mean you can't then correct something. The endless capitalisation worries me - so much drama and in charge of educating children!
Honestly, what's the problem?

vastgrandupgrade · 10/11/2021 10:27

I’m also amazed that there isn’t one already - huge safe guarding issue.

SamosaSammy · 10/11/2021 10:30

There should absolutely be a register for HE.

Imo, along with more stringent controls and capability tests for the parents before their request to HE is approved.

The fact that anyone could potentially be illiterate/uneducated themselves and still be able to pull their child out of school is awful, regardless of the safeguarding/abuse aspect.

SeasonOeufMistes · 10/11/2021 10:30

Actually every child who has ever been found abused under the guise of home ed was already known to social services so a register is redundant.

You cannot possibly know that.

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 10/11/2021 10:32

Completely disagree with you and won’t be signing

SamosaSammy · 10/11/2021 10:34

Agree with pp, no way to know that.

However even IF this was true - something not having yet happened isn't a reason to not implement appropriate controls to ensure it doesn't in future.

EdmontinaDancesWithOphelia · 10/11/2021 10:39

Don’t get me wrong, OP - I’m all for HE and recognise many faults with the UK education system. But the safeguarding of children is a State responsibility, and such safeguarding should not be denied to some children simply because their parents choose to educate them at home.

Magenta82 · 10/11/2021 10:39

Seems like a great idea to me, there should be some kind of register to monitor and protect the kids.

ImUninsultable · 10/11/2021 10:40

The kids already under supervision by SS are found because they're already under supervision!

The kids with no supervision are the ones not being found! There dont go to school, there's no register or any reason for anyone outside the home to have contact with the kids. Do you honestly think none of them are being abused? Because no one can see.

heldinadream · 10/11/2021 10:40

This is all so illogical, irrational and paranoid that it makes me want a register even more.

Blueberryflavour · 10/11/2021 10:41

I would hope that parents who HE do so because it is the best thing for their child(ren) not because they are worried about some massive conspiracy. In my previous job I came to know a lot of local HE’s, most were amazing parents who were doing the best for their children and giving up a lot to do so. Some quite frankly were odd people. I can’t understand why any reasonable person would think a register was a bad idea.
