It seems to me to be more sinister not to have a register.

PomegranateQueen · 10/11/2021 11:40

Sorry OP, a register and monitoring sounds like a very good idea. I can't believe there isnt one already.

Timeforwinterclothes · 10/11/2021 11:40

Home ed can mean no ed. I know that many parents do a great job, but a lot don't. A child in my family is way behind her peers and struggles with social interaction. My niece was also HE and now has social phobia and my cousin acknowledges that being HE has contributed to the fact that she can't form relationships in her thirties.

Sj595 · 10/11/2021 11:40

If anyone finds a pro-register petition please share the link!

Twizbe · 10/11/2021 11:41

Nope there should be a register and their should be a minimum standard for home Ed children to reach (adjusted appropriately for any SEN)

MrsHookey · 10/11/2021 11:43

@Kentuckycarby

Not signing yours but may sign a pro-register one. I think it’s a good idea
Yes, also happy to sign in favour of a register.
MrsHookey · 10/11/2021 11:44

@SeasonOeufMistes

Actually every child who has ever been found abused under the guise of home ed was already known to social services so a register is redundant.

You cannot possibly know that.

That boy in Wales hadn't seen a doctor since he was 13 months old.
SickAndTiredAgain · 10/11/2021 11:46

Oh dear, sorry OP but I agree with everyone else. I’m surprised there isn’t one already.

Carboncheque · 10/11/2021 11:47

Another one here who can’t understand why there isn’t a register now.

Marblessolveeverything · 10/11/2021 11:48

What is very concerning to me is your "evidence" is neighbour and the public. That really is concerning if you are using those references in educating a child! HE should be registered - to ensure children are enabled through education to reach their full potential.

Lockdownbear · 10/11/2021 11:48

That boy in Wales hadn't seen a doctor since he was 13 months old.

Exacty Doctors can't be responsible for picking up abuse or neglect. Some kids are never near a Doctor.

MeanderingGently · 10/11/2021 11:51

I wouldn't sign that petition, I think a register is a good idea.
We home educated our children for their primary years, that was back in the 1990s so a long time ago. We had to register our intent to home ed with the LEA and an inspector visited us every year, spent the morning with us and wrote a report. I don't know what happens these days.

I was always happy with the visits and the children loved the chap who came out. He didn't even need to see them being 'educated' although my son was always eager to read to him and show books and drawings. The point was to see what sort of an environment we were providing and whether the children were happy and sociable.

I would have thought anyone providing home ed for genuine reasons would be perfectly happy with a register surely? It protects and safeguards children who are being kept at home for more dubious purposes.

MrsHookey · 10/11/2021 11:52

I do know a child (a neighbour) who was being "home educated". In reality this seemed to consist of being left to play roblox all day and being awake half the night. The child is now back in school.

I'd like to see an inspectorate who check on the quality of education the child is receiving at home. Like someone said, these children are potentially imprisoned with parents who are mentally ill or violent or just being tutored by someone who isn't up to the job.

uhohspaghettiohh · 10/11/2021 11:54

I'm a HV. I had a family ask not to be on a register for home ed. I had to explain it was my duty to ensure the school nursing team knew about them. They were dodgy and I was right to be worried.

This is in the children's best interests. You are mad.

IncompleteSenten · 10/11/2021 11:56

"Actually every child who has ever been found abused under the guise of home ed was already known to social services"

Every child? Ever? Where did you find that information? How was that found to be accurate? Why does that mean there aren't children being abused under the guise of he who simply haven't been identified yet?

A register is a good thing. I'll certainly be supporting that.

Lordamighty · 10/11/2021 11:57

I am genuinely surprised that there isn’t already a registration system for Home Ed.

Beautiful3 · 10/11/2021 12:00

I agree with there being a register to expose any abused children, who aren't actually being home schooled.

Inthesameboatatmo · 10/11/2021 12:01

I home ed and am all for a register.
My children are registered already with the local council home ed .

trumpisagit · 10/11/2021 12:03

A child who lives close to us no longer attends school.
He has lovely parents and I am not worried about him being abused but I am not sure they have the standard of education (or time) to properly educate a young teen.
I think there should be a register and more oversight.

sillysmiles · 10/11/2021 12:11

I don't think it should be called "children not in school" as that sounds like trunacy - but there definitely should be a register for children where their parents have chosen to home educate their child.
Surely home educated kids still sit state exams?

MeatyRvita · 10/11/2021 12:12

I think it’s wrong that there’s not already a register system in place for HE children. I definitely won’t be signing that petition!
I’m sure 90% of people who chose to home educate their children believe they are doing so in their best interest, however I personally know of people who have pulled their children from school and do no education at home with them, they don’t socialise outside of the family and they play video games and watch tv all day as the parents are too lazy to do anything with them.
The children can barely read/write and have no qualifications - the family were just left to get on with it and the children fell through the cracks. Nobody once they were unenrolled from school checked up on them. A register would obviously stop this problem - it’s a great idea!

UndertonesOfCake · 10/11/2021 12:12

There absolutely should be a register of home educated children, with welfare checks and checks to make sure they're reaching an acceptable level of educational achievement (adjusted for SEN).

Parents providing a good quality of home education and welfare won't have any trouble.

The ones who will have trouble are those who are incompetent and happy with illiterate 11 year olds, those who start "home educating" to avoid prosecution for poor school attendance, gypsy / traveller families who remove their children from school early and label it "home education" while providing no education whatsoever, and those who use it as a cover for child abuse.

Just because you do home education properly it doesn't mean everyone else does.

Mama1980 · 10/11/2021 12:14

Sorry op I home ed my three youngest and am in favour of a register. I know some families personally who, although there are no safeguarding issues, simply do not educate their children - I also personally know a 13 year old whose reading/writing is year 1 level, as they do nothing, that's not ok.
I have nothing to hide and I provide a full and well rounded education. I have no objection to a register.

Hoppinggreen · 10/11/2021 12:21

@heldinadream

Actually every child who has ever been found abused under the guise of home ed was already known to social services so a register is redundant. It’s just encroaching on basic human rights. No problem if that isn’t an issue for you. It definitely is for me because I know it won’t stop there. This is all so illogical, irrational and paranoid that it makes me want a register even more.
I don’t think OP is a stranger to illogical, irrational and paranoid. Her posts actually make me MORE in favour of a register
StillPerplexed · 10/11/2021 12:21

@sillysmiles not all home educated children end up taking exams, though many do. Those that do GCSEs are charged £250 per exam to sit as a private candidate.
