Living room decoration options (with photos)

Looking to redecorate or living room. These are the options so far generated with AI, and I'm not sure any of them are quite right. I lean towards strong earthy colors. Wall colour and sofa colours can change. Would like to keep pink unit and rug. Details such as cushions, lighting can change, mirror frame can be painted and potentially (electric) woodburner could be painted/changed.

Which one is best, and what other options/changes would you suggest? I think I have decision fatigue.

What does everyone think of this?

I like the olive green much better.

SirJe · 02/10/2026 17:52

What’s with the pink safe? Get rid of whatever that is and you have so many more options.

It's a vintage cabinet and staying.

I like olive green, but I already have it in 2 downstairs rooms.

I like the second option (green) with the sofa from one.

The pink cabinet is too big for the room - the feature should be the central chimney breast and the wood burner looks too small compared to the pink cabinet. I get it is vintage - but seemingly painted wood? It needs to be in a shade to complement the rest of the room - if you don’t want to paint it - then look at the red colour wheel - the ox blood is great as are the pinky brown terracottas (maybe towards a spice / cinnamon?). I disagree about not bringing the colour to the ceiling - doing so gives the room height. Is this your existing wood burner?

cross posted - love that cinnamon colour - but can you see that it looks odd around the top of your windows not to follow it up?

CatVester · 02/10/2026 18:21

I like the cinnamon red-brown colour!

I love the green one from your latest post OP. I love your pink cabinet and disagree with other posters that it’s too big for the room. I do think the colour that you pick should go
all the way to the ceiling. If it was me I’d even be tempted to do the ceiling in the wall colour. It’s a gorgeous room, I love the bay window

All so dark! Don't like any of them and the light above the pink unit is awful. Swap for table lamps for gentler light. I would suggest a much lighter colour, maybe a stone or biscuit?

Vintage what? Certainly not an antique - IKEA?

kitchenplans · 02/10/2026 18:40

Honestly having lived in this house for years, painting above the picture rail makes these fairly narrow rooms feel claustraphobic and tiny. White above the picture rails opens the room up and out. Been there, done that, painted it back white. I know full on colour drenching is fashionable right now, but it doesn't work in this house. The pink cabinet is also not very big.

It's a 1930/40's solid wood cabinet, perfectly in keeping with my 1936 house. So, not techically an 'antique' for another 10 years or so (hence why I used the term 'vintage'), but clearly not Ikea, as well you know. Making nasty digs just makes you look mean and spiteful.

I don’t think that particular shade of pink unit works well with any of them.

momager22 · 02/10/2026 18:53

ooh from your updates the terracotta looks great and you can get away with the pink cabinet with it. Works well with the sofa colour.
I think the green walls and khaki sofas don’t work well together.

RancidRuby · 02/10/2026 18:57

I like the ox blood someone posted
up thread. I’m adding to the chorus of
ditching the white, it’s far too jarring and clinical with a moody colour. If you don’t want to colour drench then you could go for a similar tone of the wall colour in a lighter shade, I think the ox blood would look good with a soft pink similar to the pink of the cabinet. If you’re set on white, go for an off white with pink undertones.

This is good advice. I have Felt Cute by Coat in a room which also has a similar pink to your cabinet below a dado rail and it's a lovely warm colour.

So I hadn't thought about a lighter tone, but not white above the picture rail, will think on that.

I think the AI images are quite generous, the room is really small, about 3×4m, with the chimney breast encroaching into the 3m width, so really about 2.6/2.7m ish in width. The ceilings are 8'6", so the room is small but tall. Dark colours up to the ceiling really don't work. But a lighter tone of the wall colour might...

Lol 'breastfed baby poo' is exactly what DH and I called it! Originally I was only using AI to decide sofa colour, as we were sure we wanted mustard walls. Turns out we haven't liked a single picture with mustard walls, so we're back to the drawing board.

Your rug should tie in all the colours used in the room together so I would look at your rug to see what colours are in it if you are wanting to keep it. Problem is with the AI generated images is the rugs colours and tones have been slightly changed in them all. Do you have a pic/ link of the actual rug so we can see what colours would be complimentary to it?

dreamingofgoodhair · 02/10/2026 20:14

Only really like the green.

Aluna · 02/10/2026 21:07

Bear in mind when you’re painting panelling with moulding you need to use 2 or 3 tones of the same colour (indistinguishable to the naked eye) to give dimension so it doesn’t come out flat.
