Help me justify spending £160 on a kitchen bin

I need a new kitchen bin and really like one of the Simplehuman ones, but I am struggling to justify £160 when I’ve always had fairly cheap plastic ones before.

I can afford it…but £160!

Get a £60 brabantia instead

mynameiscalypso · 30/03/2026 20:04

We have one but it’s a relatively small pedal bin so didn’t cost that much. As far as bins go, I’m very happy with it. It definitely looks in much better condition after a few years of use than our previous brabantia bin did.

Boopybop · 30/03/2026 20:06

I love my Simple Human bin. Worth every penny and last forever. Buy it!

Ineedanewsofa · 30/03/2026 20:07

Don’t do it! I wasted a fortune of Joseph Joseph bins in lockdown (when I nothing else to spend money on!) 6 years on they are the bane of life, they hold practically nothing so I’m forever emptying the sodding things and they have not aged well, it’s like having an ugly filing cabinet in the kitchen

mumofoneAloneandwell · 30/03/2026 20:09

I feel like everything Joseph Joseph is just terrible and overpriced

Apparently simple human is better

Neolara · 30/03/2026 20:10

We have a simple human bin. I love it. I can open it with my hip. Much better than the brabantia it replaced.

Go on. Do it. You know you want to...

ToKittyornottoKitty · 30/03/2026 20:11

I just googled it and thought it’d be really fancy, it’s just a bog standard bin? Im baffled. I could maybe understand £60 on a decent bin that matches your kitchen, or spending lots of money on nice kitchenware… but over £100 on a bin?

YerMotherWasAHamster · 30/03/2026 20:12

Who do you need to justify it to?
Can you afford it?
If yes then get it.
You dont need to feel guilty

Why is opening it with your hip good? Mine was £16 and opens with my foot 🤷‍♀️

Wellthatsitthenisuppose · 30/03/2026 20:12

You like it and you can afford it so where’s the issue. Get it bought OP and enjoy

TheCraicDealer · 30/03/2026 20:13

We got a simple human bin for the kitchen 9 years ago, stainless steel with two compartments for general and recycling waste. Still immaculate, no dents or anything despite being in a high traffic area, with two young kids who also use it. Pricey but we definitely feel it was good value.

Gertrudetheadelie · 30/03/2026 20:13

I've just bought one because I was fed up of the skanky hinges on our old Amazon one and I am in love! It is soooo easy to clean (no fiddly crevices that needed me to get out and old toothbrush to look clean) and just well designed.

I wouldn't normally spend that much either, and for my in-laws who live where recycling is more widespread it would be a waste perhaps, but for us who are still 'black bin' for the majority of things, it is a thing of beauty.

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 30/03/2026 20:15

This is one of those false economy things.

You will be stuck with shitty bin for decades...
It will last 20 years plus and you'll trying to enjoy your breakfast in peace and it'll be sat looking at you and you’ll be fucked off you didnt get what you wanted and trying to justify getting rid of the one thats "fine"

CushionsandThrows · 30/03/2026 20:15

I've had my brilliant SimpleHuman kitchen bin for nearly 25 years. Even back then it cost £125, which felt insanely expensive, but I really coveted that bin and my parents and in-laws clubbed together and bought it for me for Christmas!😂It's outlasted all of our various and perfectly decent Branbantia bathroom bins. It doesn't have anything fancy like a sensor and I've no idea if the quality is still as good but in your shoes I would buy it without a moment's hesitation.😄

7238SM · 30/03/2026 20:18

We've had a simple human one for 15yrs and still going strong. I needed a rectangular one to for a specific size and it was one of the few that fitted. Mine has a lid where I push it and it opens and stays up, and the mechanism still works the same as when we bought it.

I previously had a cheaper pedal bin and they kept breaking. Initially, I used the simple human branded bin liners, but just buy normal, supermarket ones now.

So true!

BecauseofyouIlearntnottotrust · 30/03/2026 20:21

I had a simple human bin for years until we redid the kitchen and got bins in a cupboard.
I loved it. Did not want to get rid but there was just nowhere for it to go in the new kitchen.

crossroadsfan · 30/03/2026 20:23

I have a simple human bin and I love it. The company was also really good about replacing it when something went wrong. I love their magnifying light mirrors too.

LilyLemonade · 30/03/2026 20:24

Buy it. A bin is something you use constantly and you have to look at all the time. It is worth spending money on.

Satarn · 30/03/2026 20:33

I got a kitchen bin from amazon for a tenner, still doing its job 8 year on, abin is a bin only going to to put dirty rubbish in it.

dogonthefloor · 30/03/2026 20:44

Do it. I spent a similar amount on a branantia bin on legs and it looks SO MUCH nicer that a crap one. Had it years now and so pleased I got it. As others say you use it every day and have to look at it especially if your room is open plan. I also have a laundry bin that felt so expensive at the time but have had that over 20 years...

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 30/03/2026 20:47

I've worked in A LOT of houses and am weirdly opinionated on bins and the Simple Human ones are genuinely fantastic.

It's smart and looks nice (which given you have to look at it everyday is important!) It's great quality, easy to use (which is weird but some are not!) and hold much more then this bloody Joseph Joseph ones

saraclara · 30/03/2026 20:55

I spent what felt like a small fortune on the Brabantia Bo with legs, a long time ago. I was smitten by it's cool design, and I wanted something with two equal large, removable inner bins. I've never regretted it for a moment and it still looks like new. I love it. It's the best kitchen purchase I ever made. With the lifetime guarantee, I expect to own it forever.
I'm guessing the Simple Human bins are similarly worth the splurge. So go for it if you love it

SplodgeWaddler · 30/03/2026 21:02

I have a Simple Human bin which must be around 18 years old and still going strong. You need to be prepared to clean it out though.

MagpiePi · 30/03/2026 21:07

Gosh, I never expected such passion over a bin! Thank you all. It does sound like they are high quality things.

Several posters are right though - I’ll use it multiple times a day and it’ll be on show every time I go in the kitchen and if I get a cheaper one that I don’t really like and didn’t really want, I’ll be getting a small pang of disappointment every time I look at it.

I need to get one for the sake of my mental health, don’t I?! 🤣
