Help me justify spending £160 on a kitchen bin

I need a new kitchen bin and really like one of the Simplehuman ones, but I am struggling to justify £160 when I’ve always had fairly cheap plastic ones before.

I can afford it…but £160!

I’ve had mine for years. Still looks good and works perfectly.

sauvignonplonk1 · 30/03/2026 22:30

Which model are you getting @MagpiePi?

LittleJustice · 30/03/2026 22:32

Bloody mumsnet 🙄

I have now ordered a bin I had never heard off until half an hour ago.....

Our bin is knackered in my defence. Coming tomorrow. V excited.

CoastalCalm · 30/03/2026 22:34

Much cheaper on EBay

jellyfish798 · 30/03/2026 22:35

Go for it, lasts forever. Can't wait to get rid of the grey plastic piece of shit I have and get a nice one!

I spent what felt like a small fortune on the Brabantia Bo with legs, a long time ago. I was smitten by it's cool design, and I wanted something with two equal large, removable inner bins. I've never regretted it for a moment and it still looks like new. I love it. It's the best kitchen purchase I ever made. With the lifetime guarantee, I expect to own it forever.
I'm guessing the Simple Human bins are similarly worth the splurge. So go for it if you love it

Noooo! I have been trying to talk myself out of my many months worth of yearning for a ridiculously expensive kitchen bin, and you’ve just made it worse 😂 The Joseph Joseph ones would annoy me as the compartments are too small, but this
looks just right and I cannot justify the price!

AllTheChaos · 30/03/2026 22:39

(Who am I kidding, I am so about to spend a fortune on a damned bin!)

WoollyandSarah · 30/03/2026 22:41

You can only spend money once. What would you do with the £160 if it wasn't the bin?

When I think about buying luxuries, I have a standard list of things I compare them to. Takeaway, car, holiday etc.

Flannelfeet · 30/03/2026 22:41

Is it gold plated?

Herecomethedaffodils · 30/03/2026 22:41

Our Simple Human bin is still going strong too, many, many years on. Everything feels as strong and solid as the day we bought it. No knocks, dents or anything that makes it look tired. Easy to clean and the lock feature that keeps the lid open so you can change the bag/remove the inner easily, is so handy. Don’t bother with the Simple Human bin bags though. They are really good and strong but we recently found Beast Bags, that are almost identical for half the price!!

This is one of those false economy things.

You will be stuck with shitty bin for decades...
It will last 20 years plus and you'll trying to enjoy your breakfast in peace and it'll be sat looking at you and you’ll be fucked off you didnt get what you wanted and trying to justify getting rid of the one thats "fine"

Omg this is me! Get the bin! I was literally saying again today I want to buy it. It’s been two years.

thenightsky · 30/03/2026 22:46

Every bin I've ever met has been a filthy bastard that's impossible to dismantle enough to actually clean properly. I'm seriously thinking of just getting a good bucket and putting a liner in. Then I could shove the whole thing into the sink to wash. Or, even better, the diswasher.

TheChosenTwo · 30/03/2026 22:50

Just get it - you have to see it all the time you go in the kitchen. We have a ln integral pull out bin system, one third for recycling, one third for non recyclables and the back third for glass. I love not being able to see any bins at all personally 😂

AllTheChaos · 30/03/2026 22:53

I want it to look nice, and have two compartments, and not involve bending down to open, or for the foot pedal (if there is one) to be a design that catches all the bits in the hinge and is impossible to then clean. I don’t want ‘smart’ anything, or a battery compartment that is in the lid and keeps dropping the batteries into the bin (!) I want a soft-close lid, and an easy to clean model in general. Apparently these days that requires the spending of an amount that I cannot quite countenance but am building up to paying, as after 20 years of a crappy Brabantia knock-off whose lid broke 19 years ago (and has been irritating me ever since) I bloody well deserve a nice bin, damnit!

Some colours are a bit cheaper at John Lewis, especially with the 20% off. So some, like the black one are down to £152

canisquaeso · 30/03/2026 22:58

I need a new bin but I honestly would like to understand how and when did they become so insanely expensive??? It’s a bin.

The touch lid is great. But I was stupid and put it on the dishwasher once, which messed it up. But when I phoned Brabantia thinking they might sell me the little click mechanism, they sent a me a whole new lid, free! 10-12 years after I bought it!
Customer for life.

My sister also has the Brabrantia one on legs and she refers to it as “my sexy bin”. I would resent the waste of bin capacity where the legs are, but to be fair it is probably the most attractive kitchen bin I’ve ever seen.

Morepositivemum · 30/03/2026 23:04

While I’d never justify it myself ( just because my bin does the job), I always say you can justify spending anything on any daily use household item- when you think of it people spend huge money on a dress they’ll wear once or twice for an occasion but consider paying more than a few quid on something that is important to the household functioning!!

stringbean · 30/03/2026 23:07

We have a Simplehuman bin - love it. Wide bin with two compartments for recycling. Previously had one from Dunelm which looked nice but had a really cheap mechanism which kept breaking. Buy cheap, buy twice. Get the one you want - it will last.

LibertyLily · 30/03/2026 23:09

I prefer the kitchen bins to be out of sight inside a cupboard, so had pull-out bins in our last kitchen and will be fitting the same here soon. They are a similar price to the Simple Human bins. For now, we have an £80 triple compartment bin from john lewis which is a pain to keep clean and I hate it.

Years ago we had a cream retro Wesco one which looked stylish but I was put off that after a mouse got inside it (the joys of rural living!) I do love other Simple Human products so if I had to have a bin that was on display, that's the brand I'd choose.

It definitely pays to buy good quality - our Alessi electric kettle is still going strong after 22 years. It cost £165 in 2004 which represents really good value for money imo 😁

Maia77 · 30/03/2026 23:26

It's a great bin. I have the dual compartment one.

elver · 30/03/2026 23:26

I absolutely love my simple human butterfly bin, it’s about 18 years old and still perfect. I give it a good wash in the summer and a bit of wd40 on the inside bits Smile

It was one of the few things I took when I separated from x

justlonelystars · 30/03/2026 23:28

We’ve had a simple human bin that cost £150. 8 years later and it’s still in perfect nick. Cheap bins break so quickly so the investment is worth it IMO!

The capacity isn't reduced compared to other bins. It just sits higher than other bins. Which is good because there's no bending over.
