Help me justify spending £160 on a kitchen bin

I need a new kitchen bin and really like one of the Simplehuman ones, but I am struggling to justify £160 when I’ve always had fairly cheap plastic ones before.

I can afford it…but £160!

after getting fed up of having to replace cheaper bins on a regular basis, we went for a simple human one. It’s probably worked out cheaper in the long term and is still is perfect condition after nearly a decade. The liners are really good quality, never had an issue with bag breakages etc.

Gosh, I never expected such passion over a bin! Thank you all. It does sound like they are high quality things.

Several posters are right though - I’ll use it multiple times a day and it’ll be on show every time I go in the kitchen and if I get a cheaper one that I don’t really like and didn’t really want, I’ll be getting a small pang of disappointment every time I look at it.

I need to get one for the sake of my mental health, don’t I?! 🤣

Yes, yes you do!
We got a simplehuman bin about 10 years ago and it's still going strong! We get the simplehuman bin bags to go in it, and they're honestly great too. I never thought a bin bag could ever be anything more than any old bag for rubbish, but they are strong and fit perfectly and it's just so satisfying whenever I empty the bin!

The bin looks nice too. Just get it. You know you want it!

GreenLeaf25 · 30/03/2026 23:36

Get the simple human one. I love mine. More than I’d care to admit in a public forum!

Tarkan · 30/03/2026 23:45

Well I have a £230 Joseph Joseph one and I’m still in love with it even though DH still rolls his eyes at me over the cost of it. 🙈

I can honestly say that I have never critiqued a bin at a friends house 🤦‍♀️

biggestcatmom · 30/03/2026 23:55

I’ve had a brabantia bin for 20 years and it still going strong

Filamumof9 · 31/03/2026 00:05

If you love it and can afford it, go for it. I just bought a wesco bin for a similar amount, plus shipping from Europe to the Caribbean. But it sparks joy and will be replacing my old wesco bin that is almost 20 years old

Oxo01 · 31/03/2026 00:06

I have always had just plastic ones but the lids would often break but I have a limited space so couldnt have wider ones so made do.

In October I saw one on Amerzon that would fit my space it was not plastic, it was £130 so was a bit hesitant to pay so much on a bin but it has 2x30 litre and a 3litre food bin that sits inside the top half and fits perfectly. I love it and th8nk this will last a long time so better value in the long run.

Spanglybangles · 31/03/2026 00:48

Yet another vote for the Brabantia Bo on legs with dual compartments, I love mine. Had it about 6 or 7 years now and it’s like new. I also have a 30 litre Brabantia touch bin I’ve had for 21 years and it’s still great. Had the lid replaced for free when the catch stopped working, so the guarantee is fantastic. A great quality bin is a good purchase as long as you can afford it.

MagpiePi · 31/03/2026 07:31

I bloody hate it when it’s obvious a man ( bound to be a man) designs something that looks swanky but he’s never changed a bin bag or had to clean the damn thing in the real world.

I’m going for a butterfly top recycling one that fits exactly in the space I have. I imagined a bin to go there and this one looked exactly like the picture in my mind.

Did it, it’s payday, and I’m ordering one now!!

Just thought I would come along to SHOW OFF that I bought a Simple Human bin from John Lewis 25 years ago and still use it every day.

Jellybean23 · 31/03/2026 07:46

It’s an investment, not an extravagance. Have it.

whirlyhead · 31/03/2026 07:52

I’ve now looked at those simple human bins and they are ugly. I would not want one in my kitchen! Now, those brabantia bo touch bins are gorgeous and I wouldn’t mind one of them, but sadly my awful Joseph Joseph bin is still trucking along so I will have to stick with that. Bastard thing drives me nuts but as it developed a fault in the first month they gave me all my money back so it was a free (originally 160 €) bin so can’t complain.

MagpiePi · 31/03/2026 08:12

Done it!!

I had no idea Simple Human bins were a Thing. We got ours cheap years ago in BHS closing down sale - can't remember how much we paid but it won't have been anything like £100. It's a narrow plastic one with a pedal and it holds tons of rubbish. We line it with bog standard black bin bags. Um...it's fine?

Rhubarbx1 · 31/03/2026 08:41

Another vote for a simple human bin. We've had ours years and it still looks brand new. One of the best purchases we made for our busy household. The bin bags are super strong too, they're brilliant. I honestly dont mind paying a little more for the quality.

My sister has exactly the same bin as us, we copied her so shes had her loads longer and it still looks brand new

Honestly, go for it. So worth it

thesagarollson · 31/03/2026 08:44

Do it life’s too short

AgnesX · 31/03/2026 08:44

I've had one for a few years. It was on special offer in Dunelm at the time and still looks as good as new.

I wish there were more electric bins around. They're so convenient.

Ohpleeeease · 31/03/2026 08:45

Everyone on this thread with a Dualit toaster is with you OP.

Onebigargh · 31/03/2026 08:54

I got mine in the sale but not simple human Joseph and Joseph. Our cupboard wasn’t big enough for a side by side bin so this one fit perfectly. I have to admit that I love it. We got ours wanted it and couldn’t justify it and then got a cash gift at Christmas and used it. It’s fab.

currently mine is £179 with JL we got exactly the same bin with free delivery for £99.99 back in January. Please shop around and look for sales it’s easy to do and especially if you get £15 off a first order etc but buy want you want.

I bought an expensive kettle - it’s just a kettle but it sturdy lasted well and I get a lot of pleasure every single day. It’s is beautiful and gives me joy yes it cost £150 but I love it.

Done it!!

🥳

Whoo-hoo! It's the same one that I have! Tip: You definitely don't have to buy the Simple Human bin bags. They do fit beautifully but the tall 30l ones from Asda fit fine (they seem to get dodgy reviews but I've found them to be ok, similar ones from Tesco are shit quality though) Currently I've run out and am using cheapo black refuse sacks from Aldi, also fine.

I'm liking this bin thread - it's the first one I've seen in a while where nobody has leapt in instantly and said something nasty!

OliveHenry · 31/03/2026 09:25

I spent about £90 on an Eko bin a few years ago and have no regrets, so I'm sure you'll love your Simple Human one (they were on my shortlist too!)

But the thing that's made the most difference is good bin bags. I discovered Bacofoil Elastifit around the same time and they have been life changing (a tad dramatic I know, but true!)

They never split, stretch to fit over the rim and are genuinely brilliant. I got my first ones from Tesco to try, but now buy in bulk 'cos I don't want to risk running out! They do them in 30l and 50l.

I got one from wayfarer for £100 pounds but its three bins in one! I use one for plastics, one for paper and the other waste. Would highly recommend!
