Help me justify spending £160 on a kitchen bin

I need a new kitchen bin and really like one of the Simplehuman ones, but I am struggling to justify £160 when I’ve always had fairly cheap plastic ones before.

I can afford it…but £160!

I went from a Brabantia to a Simple Human bin 4 years when we had our kitchen done. It was expensive but worth it and fits perfectly in the space. Still looks great , no dents or scratches. I would buy again, it’s worth the money.

WhatHoJeeves · 30/03/2026 21:12

Our Simple Human butterfly bin is about 20 years old and still going strong. If they're still made to the same quality, they're worth the money.

Viviennemary · 30/03/2026 21:16

I don't think I would spend that much on a bin. But it's something that you will see every day and it will be used and hopefully will last a good few years so just go for it.

ChickNorris · 30/03/2026 21:18

another vote for the brabantia on legs bin. I freaking love mine. It's more like another piece of furniture than a kitchen bin. Although I am shocked at how much they are now. I bought mine for half that (albeit 10 years ago) and thought I was being frivolous then. Still, it'll probably last forever and I'll never want anything different.

If you can afford it, then why not? I have a German-made Wesco bin in bright red (think retro diner style) that I bought around 25 years ago. Just looked it up and they’re over £200. Pedal-based opening mechanism still works as well as new although the bin itself is looking rather shabby but I quite like that.

ChickNorris · 30/03/2026 21:22

PS: £152 via their amazon store.

PacificState · 30/03/2026 21:23

Pretty sure I got my Simplehuman kitchen bin during the first covid lockdown, so 6 years ago, and it looks like new. As someone else said, they’re really easy to clean - no stupid crevices. One of those rare things that is just really well designed and made with solid materials that don’t dent or scratch easily. It’s objectively a stupid amount of money to spend on a bin, but I’ve never regretted it.

Nonamenoplacetogo · 30/03/2026 21:24

I bought one for £30 off FB marketplace

Sprig1 · 30/03/2026 21:25

It's unjustifiable.

fizzyroselemonade · 30/03/2026 21:27

I had a simple human butterfly bin for years. Loved it. Stayed looking new and wasn't an eyesore in the kitchen like many others you see. Only got rid when we got a built in one with the new kitchen. Sold the simple human one for about £30 on facebook.

Jeeze! I didn't look at the price when I searched for the link! I think I paid about £120-£140 at the very most. I'm not one of the wealthy mumsnetters so it really did seem a bit mad at the time!
20% off at John Lewis at the moment though.

And yes, totally agree on the furniture thing. It's a beautiful design where you'd expect to see something very utilitarian.

Xmasbaby11 · 30/03/2026 21:31

We have had a simply human kitchen bin for 15 years. It still looks nearly perfect and is just so well designed and nice yet simple looking. Every time I change the bin I think, this is such a nice quality bin!

VictoriaEra · 30/03/2026 21:32

No. Can’t help with that justification.

Seldomseen · 30/03/2026 21:33

I've got a Simple Human pedal bin and even though I winced a little at the price when I bought it, it's been a joy. Had it for about 6 years so far. Looks brand new, easy to clean and just WORKS. It's one of the most used items and it was so worth it. I'd buy another one if it ever needed to be replaced.

RubieChewsDay · 30/03/2026 21:34

I just googled to see what you were talking about and it looks like they are currently on sale for less than that on the Dunelm website, although I suppose it may be a different model.

Boopear · 30/03/2026 21:35

Another lover of Simply Human bins here. You do need their special bags as well though 🙄. Bulk buying them works out cheaper..

BedlamEveryday · 30/03/2026 21:36

I felt the same when DH wanted to buy one and honestly, glad he did. We have a rectangular sensor and voice one so buy the bags that go with it, and changing the bin is now the easiest task.

Wa had a Brabantia one before - it’s not even comparable. If you can afford it, go for it.

ILoveDaffodills · 30/03/2026 21:42

I worked somewhere with an expensive Joseph Joseph bin & have friends with brabantia bin, both have had to have bits replaced & are irritating fuckers to clean. I wouldn't give either house room if they begged for it.

i bought two large, cheap, white bins when u moved in here in 2009, for the 'duration of the renovation' until i got the kitchen replaced.

they & the kitchen are still here!! 🤣

they have been fantastic & actually look fine too. Meh 💁🏻‍♀️

but they don't make them the sane anymore & if/when I need a new one I'll definitely consider Simply Human!

I have a sage coffee machine - I'm no stranger to spending stupid money on something you could buy a 'good enough' one for much more cheaply 🤣🤣

you can afford it, no ones having to go without food to buy it. It'll make you smile for years - that's priceless!

IdaGlossop · 30/03/2026 21:42

Another SimpleHuman fan here. Ours is going strong after 20+ years and looks like new. As I'm a bit pathetic, I still appreciate the lid closely slowly and soundlessly. None of that lid-swinging that the Addis bin goes in for. SimpleHuman are the aristocrat of kitchen bins. I buy the binliners in bulk on Amazon. My mum used to talk about false economy as an argument for buying things that are expensive. This is a good example. If you can afford it, why hold back?

Ireolu · 30/03/2026 21:55

We have 2x eko sensor bins . Got these over SH. We have SH soap dispensers so agree its a nice enough brand, preferred eko for bins. Lots of bins on sale at the moment. Shop around

ladygindiva · 30/03/2026 21:59

You only live once. Get the bin

LillianGish · 30/03/2026 22:01

I absolutely love mine and I love the bin bags. When we first got it I thought I’d maybe just manage with black bin liners to save a bit of cash, but honestly the whole experience has been life changing - that sounds a bit OTT, but when you think how often you empty the bin, what a fiddle it used to be, all the inconvenience of leaking bags, spills etc I would never go back! Worth every penny. You will not regret it.

JumpinJehoshaphat · 30/03/2026 22:01

I would never have a bin on show in my kitchen, so this seems like a big waste of money to me.

Therecordplayer · 30/03/2026 22:03

I would buy it.

Chickenhorse · 30/03/2026 22:06

Here you go;

That looks a nice bin, it is £160. I have £160. I will buy the bin.

There justified.
