How often do you paint your downstairs rooms?

Living room and kitchen.

Ours was painted 8 years ago. They do need painting but not sure if this timescale would be considered long overdue? Painting a kitchen is hard with all the cupboards so not keen to do it. Living room should be a lot easier but deciding on paint colour is the issue.

How often do you paint these rooms and do you do it yourself or get someone in?

I redecorate whenever I think it's starting to look like it needs a freshen up. If it's just painting, I do it myself.

Yes, kitchens are a PITA but actually, there's not much wall to paint (in mine as most of it is tiled so it's mainly door frames, above the top cupboards and the ceiling).

My living room is more of a pain because it's big and long (yes, still talking about the living room Wink )

If I had five kids three dogs and a raccoon my answer would've been the same. I do not like painting.

Well you say that….

but there is quite a difference between

Wear and tear of home with just you & DH
Versus
Wear and tear of home with 5 kids, 3 kids and a racoon

We bought as a project house 16 years ago, all the rooms were done then. Only one room hasn't been done again. Main issue is the amount of clutter - clearing enough to be able to decorate is overwhelming me

I think that people that redecorate often must have quite minimalist rooms because shifting all the stuff and preparing takes longer than the painting in our house. If I wanted to paint downstairs I would have to shift hundreds of books into boxes before I could even start anything else.

Well half the lounge was done about 4/5 years ago( feature wall ), the other has never been done ( bog standard magnolia) same as the kitchen. I do paint myself as I can barely afford the paint, let alone pay someone to do it!
I'm also a bit of a messy painter, just don't look too close at the edges/fiddly bits and it's fine!

Every 6 years is the recommendation?
I never knew that. All our walls are white, we got someone in very cheaply for a whole house refresh a few years ago. Glad we did.

We’re in our second house and got it all painted white before we set foot in it so that doesn’t count.
We then had some bits done as a refresh before Christmas last year (12 months later) and have finally decided to add a pop of colour to downstairs / hall stairs so that’s currently getting done by a professional.

Other rooms (office/bedrooms etc) I’m more than happy to do on my own and I have done! My DH hates anything like that, I love it.

I change it as and when I feel like it needs it. It would be in 6 months time if I wake up and hate it, it could be in 4 years. I will say my white walls get a refresh every year thanks to a toddler though 😂

Painted when we moved in in 2008, still looks ok but I’m not doing anything until the kids are older and we are no longer dog parents.

We moved into our house 8 years ago and haven't painted. It needs doing really but I hate doing it and don't want to pay someone.
