How often do you paint your downstairs rooms?

Living room and kitchen.

Ours was painted 8 years ago. They do need painting but not sure if this timescale would be considered long overdue? Painting a kitchen is hard with all the cupboards so not keen to do it. Living room should be a lot easier but deciding on paint colour is the issue.

How often do you paint these rooms and do you do it yourself or get someone in?

Mine were last painted in 2019. My kids are adults now and I no longer have a dog so my paintwork is fairly ok. I’ll probably get the kitchen and hallway/stairs done again next year if I haven’t moved by then. I get someone in. The last time I had both of those areas painted I paid £3.5k.

TakeMe2Insanity · 21/07/2025 06:55

We have two large rooms that are knocked through with doors so any painting is very disruptive. So as a result tend to do when very necessary.

The kitchen is also disruptive but smaller so we’ve done every few years.

Inthecafe · 21/07/2025 07:52

Mine are being repainted as I type this

last done 6 years ago

Inthecafe · 21/07/2025 07:52

Eye watering expensive

but I love it!

mamagogo1 · 21/07/2025 07:57

Blush As little as possible, 10-12 years at least between painting. I am thinking about the living room as we’ve not painted it, want to change colour, and did fully change kitchen 2 years ago, new units etc as kitchen was 15 years old and didn’t fit my requirements (factored this in when moving here) no other painting done except front door

CharlotteStreetW1 · 21/07/2025 07:57

We have a lot of wallpaper downstairs. The whole house was refurbished ten years ago. Since then, the hall and landing have been re-papered as has the dining room because they were looking shabby (thanks to late great Labrador) but the living room is fine and I will always love it so it's not on the list. Bedrooms are painted and one has been re-done after a leak. No DC which probably helps!

And we are very much GMI (Get a Man In) people!

Err, owned our old house for 15 years.
Painted once shortly after we moved in, and again about 10 years later.

New house - painted immediately after moving in (colours not for us) and no idea when it will be redone.

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 21/07/2025 08:26

Depends on room

Low use every 8/10 years
High use maybe every 5
However saying that
We have been in our house 5 years now all room painted by us over the first two years and the only room that has been properly redone is my dds as she was 14 now 19 so has had a complete makeover.

The back entrance porch is a mess. Cats dog mud It's been patched up but could do with a redo.

We generally do our own painting so it's more motivation than money involved. lol.

Moved into a newly renovated house seven years ago. Haven’t redecorated yet…

ZoomingSusan · 21/07/2025 08:28

it depends. Living room still looks lovely after 10 years. Dining room has been painted 3 times in 10 years because the first colour didn’t work and the second got damaged. I’d only paint when I m unhappy with the way a room looks.

MH0084 · 21/07/2025 08:33

Every 4/5 years at least. And I clean my walls annually with sugar soap.

NoMoreHotHols · 21/07/2025 09:26

We moved in in 2021 and haven’t painted anything. I have a friend who repaints her flat every year, but I don’t think that’s normal.

LibertyLily · 21/07/2025 10:55

We've only ever bought project houses (and can't imagine buying somewhere that was decorated to our - fairly eclectic! - taste) so have always needed to decorate immediately once the building work is complete.

The longest we've owned a house was ten years and of the downstairs rooms, the only one we decorated twice was the main living room, although we did repaint the large hallway ahead of selling.

Last year we sold a house we'd lived in for six and a half years. The only room we decorated more than once was the kitchen, as we initially chose a dark colour which we soon realised didn't work in the space. That included repainting the cabinets.

We haven't ever employed anyone to paint as we enjoy DIY and couldn't justify paying someone else to do it.

BlondieMuver · 21/07/2025 11:02

I will admit one room hasn't been painted in about 15 years! Looks awful too.

I hate decorating.

Nannyfannybanny · 21/07/2025 11:09

Open plan bungalow.... everything is downstairs and on view.. kitchen mostly tiled, rest wallpapered twice in 12 years, only because I loved the original wallpaper so much.. roughly every 5 years,do it all ourselves, painting, flooring, new rads,re fitting kitchen and bathroom. Bedroom 3 months ago (gone all William Morris) 2 dogs and grandchildren to stay!

queenofthesuburbs · 21/07/2025 11:26

Probably every 10 years

SaywhatIthink · 21/07/2025 11:49

I live a lone 5 rooms in total plus hall way all small.
Last painted by me 3 year ago took me just under a week.
Soon doing it again.

whitewinespritzerandastraw · 21/07/2025 11:53

moved in 6 years ago and just hung pictures etc.

if I need a change I move furniture around or swap whole rooms around.

im not big on all the chemicals etc in painting and just feel decorating on the whole is don’t far too often these days. And that I mean the people who repaint their whole room (or house) and chuck out all soft furnishings and buy new in a different colour.

I know people who do this every two years.

it’s not for me.

K0OLA1D · 21/07/2025 11:57

This thread is making me happy!

Moved in 5 years ago and repainted all through. The extension has been redone in that time and the utility. The hall stairs and landing are being redone this week.

I would like to redo the living room, but cba.

My mam and I are the two extremes of decorating person. I painted all my rooms when I bought this house 8 years ago and have absolutely no intention of ever painting them again if I can help it.

My mam bought a new toaster and completely redecorated her kitchen and dining room to match it, even though she only just re-decorated a year ago.

I think as long as you fall somewhere between the two extremes you're sound as a butcher's.

My mum sounds like your mum... its tiring just thinking about it.

LaLaLandDreams · 21/07/2025 11:59

The entire house gets a fresh coat every year. We’ve been getting one room per weekend done.

Shenmen · 21/07/2025 12:04

It depends on your house and the people in it. We re -paint about every three years in the most used rooms. When I say we I mean I!

But we have four kids & two big dogs. My parents haven't repainted their house since they moved in 14 years ago and it's still looks amazing .

Magnir · 21/07/2025 12:06

About every ten years, we do it ourselves, I couldn't be bothered with getting trades in, by the time I have faffed about with that I could have done it.

marmite2025 · 21/07/2025 12:08

About 15 years ago. No DC, I’m careful with the walls and I still like the colour
