How often do you paint your downstairs rooms?

Living room and kitchen.

Ours was painted 8 years ago. They do need painting but not sure if this timescale would be considered long overdue? Painting a kitchen is hard with all the cupboards so not keen to do it. Living room should be a lot easier but deciding on paint colour is the issue.

How often do you paint these rooms and do you do it yourself or get someone in?

My DH paints all our downstairs rooms every December just before the Christmas tree goes up. Skirting boards, doors are also painted. Upstairs is painted every two years.

AlligatorTears · 21/07/2025 12:26

It’s been 12 years since my lounge was done. It definitely needs it but I don’t know what I want to do with it yet so it’s been left.

I did the kitchen 2 years ago. It had been about 8 years by that point.

I've been in my house for just over five years. Bedrooms painted when I moved in, spare room not touched since. Kitchen and attic room were fine and haven't been touched, but I tiddle with the living room every couple of years. Not because it needs it so much as I get a bit bored and want an excuse to change everything up a bit. But I have beams and the cutting in drives me mad so I don't paint as often as I otherwise would!

Stripeysockspots · 21/07/2025 12:31

8 years. It definitely needs doing because my dc touch everything with filthy hands and we have a dog. It looks like a corridor in a hospital in 'special measures'. Streaks of presumably bodily fluids, Nutella, peanut butter, mud all over the walls and skirtings. I do clean the walls down regularly but they're dirty again by the time I've finished.

My mam and I are the two extremes of decorating person. I painted all my rooms when I bought this house 8 years ago and have absolutely no intention of ever painting them again if I can help it.

My mam bought a new toaster and completely redecorated her kitchen and dining room to match it, even though she only just re-decorated a year ago.

I think as long as you fall somewhere between the two extremes you're sound as a butcher's.

How long do you plan to live there? @JudgeBread

who do you live with?

I am currently getting mine redone. Three bedrooms, two baths and a large hallway…. £4980 including all woodwork.

Given I have never painted in my life, money well spent!!

Do you have children?! @Docwillseeyounow

MuchTooTired · 21/07/2025 17:36

Moved in 2 years ago, painted front room. Repainted it this year. Kitchen hasn’t been touched, but planning on knocking a wall down and making it bigger so won’t touch it until I’m ready to do the whole lot!

We do all the work ourselves so significantly cheaper. If I had to pay trades none of it would’ve been done yet and wouldn’t be for a few years!

Zov · 21/07/2025 17:39

About once every 7 years. I don't get these people who do it every year.

Batshit!

About every 5-7 years but this time I am using Class 1 scrub rated paint colour matched to a Dulux colour I like.

The children are now adults so far less scuffing as they do down the hallway. I intend to paint the hall and stairs very soon and the lounge again before Christmas.

Don't know really, at least another 5 years or so, probably more. Just me and husband!

Ah! Important detail that!

BeMellowAquaSquid · 21/07/2025 18:15

We’ve just finished painting ours and I’m already looking and thinking jeez this will need doing again in two years. Use good paint is my tip! We skimped and massively regret it now.

If I had five kids three dogs and a raccoon my answer would've been the same. I do not like painting.

catbathat · 21/07/2025 19:26

It is usually said you need to repaint every 6 years

Newdoggo · 21/07/2025 19:30

When I get bored - I do it all myself though and enjoy it :)

TwelfthOfNever · 21/07/2025 20:05

10-15 years, as long as practical really. We've got one wall of the lounge where the cats leave footprints as they leap up to the window which gets a coat more often!

LavenderBlue19 · 21/07/2025 20:11

I don't remember my parents ever repainting our house, unless they wanted to change the colour. Is this a thing that people feel needs doing?

To answer the question, we moved in nine years ago and decorated in the following two years. I have absolutely no intention of redecorating anytime soon. I clean scuffs and dirt off walls with a magic eraser.

DramaAlpaca · 21/07/2025 20:15

Every few years when I get bored with the colour. I persuade DH to do the ceiling then I paint the walls.

SweetFancyMoses · 21/07/2025 20:17

Our sitting room and kitchen/diner and hall have just been painted after 2 years. Study and utility room - maybe every 5 years. Ds loo, about once a year as I enjoy changing it up.

Womblingmerrily · 21/07/2025 20:25

I've just realised we haven't painted downstairs since we moved here - 19 years ago!!

It really really really does need doing.

Maybe next time I have annual leave, maybe not.

CalmFawn · 21/07/2025 20:27

I do get bored quite easily and love a refresh. We have 3 small children so they do get marked too. We do ours every 4-5 years
