Denby- worth investing?

I’ve bought my DD a few Denby crockery pieces from TKMaxx as she is hopefully buying her first flat soon.
just wondering if I should buy her a full set? It’s nearly half price. Is it worth the investment?

I absolutely LOVE my Denby set. It's such good quality and I've had it years and years. My parents have Denby also, and their set is older than mine by a long way. Half price is fantastic, I highly recommend it.

It depends on the style - I think. It needs to be timeless to have a chance of being used for years.

My own Mum bought me a full china set about 25 years ago - all very simple and white. I still use it because the simplisity of it means it's never really out of style or 'clashes' with anything.

Passerillage · 01/11/2023 11:03

It's only worth the investment if it's one of their long term sets that they'll carry forever. I got Imperial Blue 18 years ago when we got married, and it's brilliant being able to replace broken pieces. When I was growing up, we didn't have much money and I remember my Mum buying various cheap whole sets, and we never seemed to have matching plates etc., yet well off friends always seemed to. It was ages before I understood why.

If it's in TK Maxx be aware that it might be a discontinued design - just look it up on their website or share the name of the design here and people might know.

Denby is lovely and really durable.

But I've had some of those Ikea plates for a long time and they are absolutely bomb proof. Amazingly good value.

FeltCarrot · 01/11/2023 11:13

We got a full Denby blue linen set nearly 20 years ago and it’s still going strong. It’s just a shame it’s discontinued as I live in fear we’ll break something!

ladeluge · 01/11/2023 11:15

Oh I love Denby. When I left one of my jobs about twenty years ago I was presented with a FULL set of the Marrakesh range. Everything, teapot coffee pot sugar bowl, milk jug, mugs, cups saucers, side and dinner plates, bowls serving dishes and probably bits I can't remember now!

It is timeless and lovely an I use bits of it every day.

the IKEA range above looks no different to many Denby designs to me and is very nice!

.

BodenCardiganNot · 01/11/2023 11:15

I'd get her the Ikea ones if that is what she has asked for.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 01/11/2023 11:16

Denby is brilliant and really hard wearing. I only buy it from the factory and get seconds to save money but it lasts so well. I have dropped stuff and it doesn't break!

I would absolutely recommend it. You can put it all in the oven, under the grill, in the dishwasher and the microwave.

Even if a set is discontinued you can pick bits up second hand and denby themselves have a service to help people locate items they need.

I know many people who have Denby that is over 50 years old. The gypsy design that was fashionable in the late sixties and early seventies is often seen being used, sometimes now in cool cafes as mismatched sets!

FeltCarrot · 01/11/2023 11:45

If I was buying now I’d love this range!

Denby- worth investing?
CanIPetThatDawg · 01/11/2023 11:48

It seems a kind of old fashioned thing to me, to collect a Denby set that will see you through your entire life. Assuming your daughter is young, I’m not sure it is worth you shelling out on it, as it might not be what she’s into.

KitchenSinkLlama · 01/11/2023 11:55

One of my sets of crockery is Denby speckle. It's lovely and very robust.

WeighDownOnMe · 01/11/2023 11:59

I wouldn't have appreciated a set of expensive plates when I was in my 20s - in fact I still wouldn't really value them to be honest.

She's young and her tastes will change. I'd stick with ikea!

Pinkitydrinkity0 · 01/11/2023 12:00

I would go for IKEA and get Denby when she moves into a forever home/turns 30/gets married/etc.

I am only now thinking of investing in Denby at 31 - my Next set has done me 8 years and three moves! However my mum is forever buying replacement Denby that dad manages to smash.

namechange0998776554799000 · 01/11/2023 12:04

We have both Denby and IKEA. Both sets are bombproof, great to eat off and easy to replace/add to (we have Imperial blue Denby - very classic - and our ikea ones have been stocked for years). We use ikea for everyday and Denby for Christmas/special meals/when we run out of plates. They were a wedding present. For a young person starting out, I'd stick to ikea and think of Denby in a few years

fredafry · 01/11/2023 12:06

That's an absolute bargain for the pasta dish. I don't know if I'd buy a full set until after your daughter has seen those few pieces.

Though I'm a fan of mismatched crockery and china, personally, rather than complete matching sets. I still have some Denby from my student days; baroque and Imperial blue, and still going strong. I've added more, from different ranges, since.

BodenCardiganNot · 01/11/2023 11:15

I'd get her the Ikea ones if that is what she has asked for.

Exactly this!

PuppyMonkey · 01/11/2023 12:11

Our Greenwich set is 24 years old this Christmas and still going strong. We live near the Denby factory shop - they have a “spoils” bit with rejected crockery. Usually with a tiny speck of stray colour or something. That’s the way to do it!Grin

Lavenderhazee · 01/11/2023 12:14

I don’t know how old your DD is - but I’m 30 and prefer the Ikea set - I think they’re more on trend

nutsnutspistachionuts · 01/11/2023 12:23

Get her the Ikea ones for now. They're still very nice and she'll also feel less pressured to keep them forever. Young people have to move house a lot these days and it's depressing when things get broken in the move. I say this as a vintage Denby collector!

Peachpicklepie · 01/11/2023 12:25

If you have Tesco vouchers you can spend them at denby for triple their value - saved us loads!

Colinfromaccounts · 01/11/2023 12:31

I agree it's old fashioned to want a full set of matching crockery. If she hasn't asked for it then don't buy it for her, buy her what she's asked for

MidnightOnceMore · 01/11/2023 12:31

I'd ask her. I do think Denby is worth it, we have a set that has lasted for ages plus some hand me down bits too, but I wouldn't invest without checking.

When we got married in the last '60s we really liked the Denby Arabesque but we couldn't begin to afford it. In later years we bought Potter's Wheel, 8 place settings of the plates and bowls with lots of serving dishes which we actually took through Gatwick as hand luggage, our fingers were almost severed! Later we bought more Potter's Wheel though Ebay and I have looked at the Arabesque, still very expensive! I'm very tempted to treat myself though.
