Denby- worth investing?

I’ve bought my DD a few Denby crockery pieces from TKMaxx as she is hopefully buying her first flat soon.
just wondering if I should buy her a full set? It’s nearly half price. Is it worth the investment?

Thanks all! Very helpful.
she is late 20’s and loves crockery and pottery etc.
good to hear the ikea stuff is robust - I’m thinking I might get that set in blue!

Denby lasts for ever, I think it is a more resilient type of stoneware than lookalikes.

There is masses for sale secondhand as it just goes on and on. If it's in TKMaxx it might be a discontinued pattern but they tend to keep the same shapes so it would mix and match with another pattern. I would leave it for now but if she gets to a point where she needs more crockery go along to a seconds outlet.

Nobody knows if their design will be a long running one, we got lucky with Greenwich 30 years ago. But they do give you notice of discontinuation.

My parents got a Denby set in Imperial Blue when they got married almost 35 years ago. They are pretty much good as new after 35 years of everyday use and never look dated. I don't think anything has been broken other than one plate that got chipped when my sibling was small, but if anything does break, then they are easily replaced if from one of the main collections.

cuckyplunt · 01/11/2023 13:20

We’ve had ours since our wedding 22years ago.. still going strong.

Contraryjane · 01/11/2023 14:20

When I was your daughter’s age, my parents would offer to buy somethings for my first flat. I’d tell them what I would like, and bless them, they would always choose something “better”….but not what I’d actually asked for.

I've got a set of 20 of everything as we've got a large family and Christmas involved continuous plate washing. We've got the coupe style ones, and they're very robust but the feckers don't fit in the dishwasher very well as the edges are so thick and it does stress me out on a daily basis. I'm pleased with them other than this fact though. I've also got a mix of colours - we've got studio grey, studio blue and halo speckle so that we're not stuffed if they discontinue one.

TK Maxx are good and you can often get seconds on their website/outlets.

I traded all my Tesco club card vouchers just before they ended the 3x the value offer. I now have £285 to spend on Denby stuff.
FINALLY I can get some decent tableware.

I am pleased to read this thread.

CharlotteBog · 01/11/2023 14:40

Peachpicklepie · 01/11/2023 12:25

If you have Tesco vouchers you can spend them at denby for triple their value - saved us loads!

Not any more. The triple value offer ended in June.

Violinist64 · 01/11/2023 14:51

I, personally prefer the Denby and, as you say, it is timeless. However, perhaps it would be better to show your daughter the same picture you posted here and ask her if she would prefer this set or the one she originally liked.

Exactly what I was thinking.

My DH does this too -for me and the kids. No one asks him for anything any more. There's something really patronising and demeaning in someone deciding that what you chose for yourself isn't good enough, that they can choose better.

An ikea set is a good set for a first. Save the denby for another day when she's settled into her style, or as a gift for a significant event?

GrimGrinningGhosts · 01/11/2023 17:37

I have a few sets Denby White Wear. It's ok. It came cheap with Clubcard Points over the years. I absolutely wouldn't have paid full price for it.

The cutlery, now that I wouldn't touch again. I was sent two sets before they managed to get me one that wasn't marked and pitted from the off. My daughter in law also went through two sets of their glasses as both sets had manufacturing faults. She finally got a perfect set but both broke within weeks.

Gassylady · 01/11/2023 17:43

I would get your daughter the IKEA crockery. That is clearly to her tastes. I say this as another one whose Denby is 23 years old and going strong used every day and for Christmas! But we choose it because we liked the look of it not because we thought it was an investment.

Justaflippertyjibbet · 01/11/2023 17:45

I collected Denby Chevron when I got married in 1969 and was later given a set of Reflections. Loved them both at the time I had them but very disappointed to find they are now in their museum. It has put me off buying anymore.

Poppysmom22 · 01/11/2023 17:46

I bought denby 15 years ago and now I fancy something new the bloody stuff will not break I've lost 2 plates in 15 years.

Mumofoneandone · 01/11/2023 17:48

Definitely, classic and lasts really well. My parents have had much of there's for decades. Sibling had his for over 20 years and my husband 's had his for years too (predates me!)
Other cheaper stuff chipped, stained or broken.

Massivescreen · 01/11/2023 18:04

I did what @CharlotteBog did and bought all my Denny with Tesco vouchers I got loads for my money that has lasted me years. And generally when the bowls have broken I’ve found replacements in Tk maxx… bonus

LadyWiddiothethird · 01/11/2023 18:09

Denby is really tough! I have a lot of it and it rarely breaks. The other thing I like is the casserole dishes etc. wash easily,no having to scrub baked on stuff.

Pinkpinkpink15 · 01/11/2023 18:22

I think you should either buy her what she's asked for or tell her you'd like to treat her to the Denby IF she would like you to.

don't just do it.

Yeah, this. It's so bloody disappointing at her age, when you haven't got much money, to ask for something you want, and to be given something else. It's a dick move. Don't do it, OP.

RaspberryJamTart · 01/11/2023 18:41

I bought denby seconds when I was in my late 20's I'm now 50 and have moved a gazillion times and use them daily, put in dishwasher and microwave and the only thing that has happened is my DC smashed one piece after 20 years. Still looks as vibrant as it did years ago.

RaspberryJamTart · 01/11/2023 18:43

Plus there is a denby matching company that will find pieces that have been discontinued

GlasgowGal82 · 01/11/2023 18:47

I decided to invest in eight denby mugs a few years ago and three of them are already broken and in the bin. We're not a clumsy family and I can't remember ever breaking one of our bog standard mugs. I don't think they were up to every day use so I wouldn't bother with the denby and would get her the ikea ones that she asked for.

bonkersplonkers · 01/11/2023 18:48

We have the Denby Halo range, it's indestructible and after 8 or 9 years we are still not sick of it. There are so many pieces to a Denby range too. Also live not too far from the factory.

fredafry · 01/11/2023 18:53

What range was that from? I wonder if some of the more modern Denby isn't as robust? @GlasgowGal82 I still have some super-old Denby but a couple of minor breakages from Azure and another pattern which was yellow with a muted orange pattern. I'll have to look it up.

I never bothered with the cheaper Denby Everyday range as that didn't look up to much.

Katrinawaves · 01/11/2023 18:57

I like the ikea set more too and if that’s what she has asked for I’d respect her taste and stick with that one.

We’ve had the Denby reflex crockery for about 25 years now. It’s long since discontinued but still really easy to buy on eBay quite cheaply. I have loads of it - at least 20 place settings if not more. I always have enough matching plates to feed a large gathering of people - even if sometimes it’s a mix of full size, salad plates and pasta bowls.
