Denby- worth investing?

I’ve bought my DD a few Denby crockery pieces from TKMaxx as she is hopefully buying her first flat soon.
just wondering if I should buy her a full set? It’s nearly half price. Is it worth the investment?

Honestly I'd just ask her. I appreciate you want to buy her something lovely but I think sometimes two things that look very similar to one person can look different to another- it's quite possible she would genuinely rather have the Ikea and it's really frustrating when you're given something very close to the thing you actually want as it means you can't even go and buy it for yourself as you already have something very similar.

I decided to invest in eight denby mugs a few years ago and three of them are already broken and in the bin. We're not a clumsy family and I can't remember ever breaking one of our bog standard mugs. I don't think they were up to every day use so I wouldn't bother with the denby and would get her the ikea ones that she asked for.

Oh no! Wonder if you got a faulty batch - I still have the ones I had as a wedding gift 16 years on

Mumaway · 01/11/2023 19:04

We were given a set of denby in the same circumstances 20years ago. Despite my best efforts we have only had to replace 2 bowls in that time. It's very heavy though

Twillow · 01/11/2023 19:06

I've inherited a denby set and it's incredible - only one thing broken in the 30 years since it was bought. The bloody stuff bounces - I've dropped it onto a concrete floor (with lino on top) and no damage!

MissAtomicBomb1 · 01/11/2023 19:06

Just to add, not sure if you are anywhere near Derbyshire OP but the factory shop is huge and has all the sets on display. There are big discounts on seconds, a lovely cafe, gift shop & farm shop. Well worth a day out & then she could choose her own.

erikbloodaxe · 01/11/2023 19:13

I have the full set of Greenwich still looks like new after 20 years and it's had a hammering. I'm downsizing and youngest DS is having it (24) his girlfriend had Denby growing up at her mother's house and is thrilled to be having it.

MonumentalLentil · 01/11/2023 19:30

I have some restaurant plates, (from a supplier, not pinched), wanted something hard wearing, however they have cutlery scratches on them after several years hard labour.

Does Denby do that?

KatBurglar · 01/11/2023 19:34

I have had mine for 29 years, still used every day. They were alsio a Christmas gift from my parents at your daughter's age.

Fourmagpies · 01/11/2023 19:38

I have my parent's set of Sherwood which is over 50 years old. Pretty much in perfect condition. I also have a set of Imperial Blue which exH and I had when we married. That's still in perfect condition and is over 17 years old. I do have some IKEA plates from 25 years ago which has lasted a long time but isn't in as good condition and has chipped.

Arbutusflower · 01/11/2023 19:42

The Denby Chevron I just ate off is getting on for 50 years old [and I've seen it in the Museum of the Home as an exhibit]! But Denby is a slightly "old" style of crockery in some ways. What does she want, that's the answer.

AnImaginaryCat · 01/11/2023 19:43

It's only worth it if it's what she wants and therefore will need.

I've Denby stuff. Got it for my wedding - and was given cups and saucers which I've never used, not even once, in 25 years.

My mum the bought me 18 large dinner plates many Christmas ago despite eating at my house many times and knowing I didn't use the six I had been given for my wedding. Not sure what she was thinking. I've now got a shelf in my press entirely filled with 24 huge plates that have never see the light of day since their one use the Christmas day I got them. It's such a waste of money sadly. (As well as waste of press space!)

PPPPumpkin · 01/11/2023 19:49

@JudgeJ my Mum has gifted us most of her Arabesque, it's not desirable to many (very retro, thankfully my house style is hotchpotch retro) but I love it, along with Endless family memories, Christmases etc! It really lasts!! My Mum then collected Daybreak and uses it most days, it's all so durable. I think all the designs have appeal, I'd collect them all if I had space!

AitkenDrum1970 · 01/11/2023 20:02

I’m still using Denby that was my dad’s from the 1960s. I’m gradually adding to it, fairly reasonably priced, from eBay

madmumofteens · 01/11/2023 20:19

I got a Denby set for wedding presents 26 years ago love it still but watch if it gets discontinued

The halo speckled range

I have Halo, bought my first pice 10 years ago and have the full set now.

I would absolutely recommend, it's truly beautiful 😍

CobwebsAndCauldrons · 01/11/2023 11:02

It depends on the style - I think. It needs to be timeless to have a chance of being used for years.

My own Mum bought me a full china set about 25 years ago - all very simple and white. I still use it because the simplisity of it means it's never really out of style or 'clashes' with anything.

Edited

I think this is a really daft way of thinking of things.

My mum still uses the Denby set she started buying in the early 90s. Does it look dated? Yes, but she doesn't care. It's crockery. She's not serving up for the queen, she's serving up for her family, and we all have the same happy memories around the meals we had together.

To suggest buying something that might not be 'timeless' like people rebuy crockery to match their kitchen is so weird Confused

(But yes @Twoshoesnewshoes buy it)

CobwebsAndCauldrons · 01/11/2023 21:03

Fair enough. Then we will agree to disagree - pleasantly, I hope.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 01/11/2023 22:26

@CobwebsAndCauldrons absolutely not, fisticuffs at dawn.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 01/11/2023 22:26

(for avoidance of doubt, that was a joke!) I forget sometimes that text isn't quite as forgiving as speech....

Paddleboarder · 01/11/2023 22:30

I love Denby but hate to say I have only a couple of plates left from two whole dinner sets due to breakages! We did use it all the time though.

Waystation · 01/11/2023 22:32

Denby is a really good buy - some of mine (Imperial Blue) is over thirty years old and still in daily use.

Stopsnowing · 01/11/2023 22:42

I have my parents arabesque which is more than fifty years old and looks great. When growing up it was our everyday and best - no need for two sets.

You can sell them on ebay?

Twoshoesnewshoes · 01/11/2023 23:23

I asked her if she wanted exactly what was in her list, or if I should get something similar but better quality if I saw it. She said yes, she’s made the list mainly based on budget.
so I ordered six plates and six pasta bowls.
i really like them so I’ll have them if she doesn’t want them!
