Denby- worth investing?

I’ve bought my DD a few Denby crockery pieces from TKMaxx as she is hopefully buying her first flat soon.
just wondering if I should buy her a full set? It’s nearly half price. Is it worth the investment?

We got a Denny set with vouchers from our wedding. It’s lasted longer than my marriage 🙄🤣 I’m just gutted that after 15 years the line has been discontinued! May need to consider replacing it at some point. Oh and just to add the one type of plate we use the most is the pasta bowls, great shape especially for roast dinners, holds plenty of gravy!

(for avoidance of doubt, that was a joke!) I forget sometimes that text isn't quite as forgiving as speech....

What! But here I am at dawn waiting - fists drawn and ready. Grin

Yeah, this. It's so bloody disappointing at her age, when you haven't got much money, to ask for something you want, and to be given something else. It's a dick move. Don't do it, OP.

Yeah, lucky enough to have people to buy for you but then never getting to choose anything for yourself is bitter sweet.

MissBeevor · 02/11/2023 07:22

I’d get her the IKEA set she asked for. There’s something vaguely stodgy and depressing about Denby.

overthinkersanonnymus · 02/11/2023 07:23

I love my denby set. I have the cream Monsoon rage and it's beautiful. Definitely worth the investment

TrudyProud · 02/11/2023 07:30

Twoshoesnewshoes · 01/11/2023 11:05

It’s This range
she had asked for These ones from IKEA, I think the denby are similar and will hopefully last longer?

We got Denby sets as part of our wedding gifts 2 years ago. We love them. They are our main sets of plates

We have the blue ones for daily use and the speckled serving plates when we use the dining table.

I'd definitely recommend it but get your daughters input to make sure she'll like them

I think this says it all really, the OPs dd isn't getting married. She's not choosing plates for the long term with her fiancé. She just wants some IKEA stuff.

You can sell them on ebay?

I have thought about selling them. Just not sure where would be best. I'm in Ireland so ebay offers fewer interested parties that wouldn't involve very high postage.

Also I'm put off by the idea of having to deal with the reaction of my mum when she clocks they are gone. She'll be very much offended and "why did I bother buying them?".

Iizzyb · 02/11/2023 07:39

Our imperial blue looks brilliant my ddad bought it when we bought our house both age 26.

I don't look so good these days & the not so D P has been gone many years but the Denby is still going strong...!

The big dishes are brilliant. The square one and the pasta dishes are still my favourites.

It was our choice though. I'd have been fuming if something had been chosen for us...

TheCompactPussycat · 02/11/2023 07:50

Our Regency Green set has been going strong for 20 years of marriage. 2 of the mugs (which we use every day) got chips but were easily replaced from the outlet store near us. But that's all the damage it's sustained even though we've used it every day, with kids and a stone kitchen floor.

ReviewingTheSituation · 02/11/2023 07:56

I think it comes down to how you look after it.

We bought a set of 4 plates, bowls, side plates from Cargo (long since gone bust!) when we bought our house in 1997. Apart from 1 smashed bowl, all going strong and in daily use.
We had a full dinner service from M&S a year later, which we use the pasta bowls and dinner plates from weekly. Everything else when we have people round etc. Not one piece has broken. Friends had the exact same set from their wedding the year before and have none of it left.

Denby is long lasting for sure, but it's also not a style for everyone, so she may not want to be dealing with something that's going to last forever as her tastes change. But it's certainly not the only thing that can/will last.

muddyford · 02/11/2023 08:16

I found it very heavy, being stoneware, compared with plain white porcelain. I wouldn't describe it as an investment anyway.

BodenCardiganNot · 02/11/2023 09:07

There is masses of Denby for sale on eBay.

Taxbreaks · 02/11/2023 09:23

Due to a loving relative without much imagination, we have 12 place settings with just about everything in Imperial Blue. There are slight differences over time but we have been using lots of it for 30 years, still looks great.
The downside is that our set (plates, bowls, cups, mugs, jugs and serving bowls in two or three sizes ...) must weigh at least ten stone.
So, fine if your DD has space under worktops, not a great idea for wall cupboards where many people might put their crockery.

tattygrl · 02/11/2023 12:42

Careful with stuff from TK Maxx. Sometimes brands create ranges specifically for value stores like TK Maxx, so it's genuinely from the brand, but it's not actually the top quality range they would sell at full price elsewhere.

This may not bother you, no reason for it to be an issue if you just like an item you see in there, but from an investment POV it might affect resale value.

You can Google what the different codes mean on TK Maxx labels so you can see whether an item is genuinely reduced price that was sold for higher elsewhere, or whether it's an item developed specifically to be sold cheaper at TK Maxx.

This is what I was thinking. I've had my dinner service for 23 years, it's not Denby, and it's still in perfect condition. I use it every day for everything.

Jakadaal · 02/11/2023 13:55

We received a full denby dinner service(Blue Imperial) as a wedding present 28 years ago and use it every day. There have been breakages and I just replace from a seconds shop at a local retail park.

To a degree.

As I said, our Denby set has lasted 20 years. Some other small plates we also use very regularly which I got from Habitat 30 years ago when I was a student are also still in pristine condition. But another set which we used to use regularly before we got married and which came originally from Sainsburys is really very chipped and is missing a couple of plates/bowls which have been broken.

So partly looking after it, but partly down to quality.

weemouse · 02/11/2023 14:16

She's asked for the IKEA range, what are you hell bent on fostering your preferred Denby choice on her?

She isn't. She asked here for advice, went back to her daughter who said she would like the more expensive set as her wishes were based on budget.

BecauseTheWorld · 02/11/2023 14:38

Yes. We have it as it’s so easy to replace when things get broken!

Pasithean · 02/11/2023 14:40

My Denby Greenwich set is thirty years old this week. Still used daily.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 02/11/2023 15:44

Thanks @CharlotteBog
i don’t think I am pushing my own choice- I have mainly next and ikea crockery!
just want to get her something nice for her first home, and the denby is not loads more than the ikea.

Did you choose it yourself? My Wedgwood set is also thirty years old, in great condition and used daily. But I picked it.

If you are going to be eating your weetabix from the same bowls for three decades you should get to choose it.

I thought Greenwich came out in 1994 because it was in our wedding list that year and so new there were no seconds. You must have had the first set!

@GladysHeeler is right though you need to like it as it's hard to justify changing it just for reasons of preference.
