Do my walls and carpet clash?

I spent a fortune on getting my walls painted and carpet on the stairs and now I think it clashes. The walls are pink/purple and the stairs is dark grey. Any ideas anyone?

Yes I've put pictures up on the walls this week and it calms the contrast down a lot. I think I'll go ahead and paint the skirting board and stair banisters cream and that might further calm things down.

Grey carpet doesn’t go with anything really, I have no idea why it’s so popular.

I see what you mean op. I'd go for a lighter colour grey with a lilac tint of it

Do NOT paint the skirting board the same colour, that is terrible advice. Good luck, it's so disheartening when a decorating project doesn't come off.

Of course you are entitled to your opinion @Lilyargin ...but colour drenching is a method suggested by many interiors and colour specialists (Farrow & Ball and Little Greene to name but two). It creates a more cohesive look as well as the illusion of more space and provides a great backdrop for art, textiles, decorative pieces etc. It's a similar idea to painting fences black/other dark colours to make them disappear and the planting 'pop', but I concur it's not necessarily for the faint hearted.

DH and I (who both have design/interiors backgrounds) chose this look back in 2018 as we felt it suited the period style of our 400+ year old house (see attached pics of our hall which is not yet complete and is a bit grimy due to us being in the middle of other building work). The hall and family bathroom are the only rooms where we've carried the colour up onto the ceiling, but we've used the same colours on walls and joinery in every room - so in the living room it's F&B Olive, in the main bedroom it's Little Greene Roman Plaster for instance.

Anyway, it sounds as though you've reached a solution (even if it's a stop gap one) that you'll be able to live with @Overtiredagain. Hopefully all the discussions and suggestions here have been helpful and not muddied the waters further for you 😊

We used Little Greene Slaked Lime mid in our hall-great colour, not grey or cream but soft-will tone down the carpet. However, we did do a coat of an off white paint that turned out too yellowy. My dh was all for leaving it, but I put a coat of slaked lime over and it made all the difference. It’s so easy to make mistakes in a hall-the sooner you correct it, the better you’ll feel.

For what it’s worth, I think a lighter shade of grey would have been nice with that wall.

Or… dulux foxglove might work with the dark grey carpet?

Sympathy, OP. It can be so hard to get it right

Just go for nice white walls and it'll look fine. Just a bit dark with the pink. I like a velvety carpet!

Sorry but I agree, it doesn't look right. I'm really not a fan of the the wall colour

Me too I'm afraid.
