Do my walls and carpet clash?

I spent a fortune on getting my walls painted and carpet on the stairs and now I think it clashes. The walls are pink/purple and the stairs is dark grey. Any ideas anyone?

I love the wall colour but really don’t like the carpet sorry. I think it’s too dark and to thick. You need a lighter grey the same sort of tone as the wall. The wall is a pastel colour and the carpet is dark grey

hugefanofcheese · 15/07/2023 07:06

Sorry but the carpet isn't very nice. Too dark, thick and shiny plus the texture makes it look messy- as a PP says, too many shades where it catches the light. i think the wall colour is too pastel-y with it and they clash. Pale and matte with a more natural wool-like appearance (even if not wool) would look better, plus pink skirting etc. If not then white or a cooler colour might work with the carpet, say a pale jade toned green.

nobodysdaughternow · 15/07/2023 07:30

The carpet is lovely, but what is the darker purple panel just under the banister?

Charcoal grey looks fab with colder, fresh tones. The purple is is too warm I think.

Don't change thee carpet when you could paint the walls - you obviously have a money tree out back, but the environmental impact isn't good.

Snoken · 15/07/2023 08:01

They do clash and it all looks very busy. I could live with the wall colour but the carpet would have to be much more neutral, both in colour and texture. Alternatively, take the carpet off and sand and oil the stairs if the wood is in a good condition. That would in my opinion look the best.

IridescentRainbird · 15/07/2023 08:02

I like the colour combination. I would probably put pictures on the wall with frames to match the carpet.

Malbab · 15/07/2023 08:32

Color the walls pure brilliant white and it will look better

Jongleterre · 15/07/2023 08:47

It looks cold and harsh.

Stairs should be warm and inviting.

pimplebum · 15/07/2023 08:59

Carpet is expensive I'd repaint the wall maybe get Mach pots with a grey lilac tinge ???

Losingmymind85 · 15/07/2023 09:14

That looks an expensive carpet.
Like PP have said, paint the wall. You.nay find you like the carpet more once you've gpt a colour that complements.
I think a light oatmeal (beige) or white will look really nice.

Tiredjoanna · 15/07/2023 09:18

Defo repaint walls, not such a pastel tone with the dark carpet. And go for paint with sheen/silk, matte looks awful anywhere. Good luck 🤞

SpringIntoChaos · 15/07/2023 09:40

Oh blimey OP...Sorry but I really dislike the walls! Both the colour and the matt effect. Love the carpet though - really cosy and a great colour. I would be repainting the walls white.

SpringIntoChaos · 15/07/2023 09:41

*matte

Totalwasteofpaper · 15/07/2023 09:52

The carpet is pretty awful (sorry)
And the wall colour is very cold.

Given the carpet is new you are just going to have to work with what you have got unless you teally hate it.
Hard to tell if if its brown based or grey based....

If brown I'd go for something like dulux rum caramel in shade 4 or 5. If you go for something neutral like that add some art or hangings to add interest and colour

Ideally though just get a load of testers and dont be shy about trying darker colours.

neilyoungismyhero · 15/07/2023 09:56

It is all a bit uninspiring to be honest. Sometimes things look good in your head but not so much IRL. I get a lot of inspiration from Pinterest.

Blossomandblooms · 15/07/2023 10:03

I'm afraid it's a no from me, bot for the carpet and the colour. I think a nicer warmer colour would look better :)

LibertyLily · 15/07/2023 10:54

I'm afraid I'm not a fan of the carpet or the wall colour @Overtiredagain. It all seems rather bland and devoid of pattern/interest to me. I was expecting to see a patterned wallpaper when I opened the thread.

However, if you love the wall colour, I believe the overall look would definitely be improved by painting the skirting/moulding between the stairs and walls in the same colour as the walls (in corresponding eggshell finish, obviously).

I'm not a fan of this 'striped' effect that is created when you use white on skirting/architrave between two different colours - particularly when the moulding in question is s narrow strip such as yours - and prefer colour drenching.

Before going to the extreme (and expense) of replacing the carpet, I'd try that and see if it makes a difference.

Overtiredagain · 15/07/2023 10:59

Thank you @LibertyLily ! this is really helpful. There is a lovely design of banisters on this stairs - I'll get a photo. And I could maybe paint the skirting and the banisters this colour to retrieve it a bit? I find all this very difficult. i hate the faff. And I made a mistake with the carpet and I don't really know what to do now - but this might make things better?

I could , I suppose, have the walls painted. But it seems like such a waste. Especially considering the fact that it's the carpet I don't like. What a mess. I'm really busy at work and haven't the brain space for this

Do my walls and carpet clash?

The banisters are actually lovely and I could paint them any colour that could make things better

Not nice, imo. Sorry.

Hullykel · 15/07/2023 11:22

You are over thinking it. It looks fine, even with the white skirting. It looks clean and fresh.

Hullykel · 15/07/2023 11:24

Also dark grey is so practical for a hallway stairs and this pink is meant to be the new 'in' colour. It really looks perfectly acceptable.

Tillyteacup · 15/07/2023 11:29

Don’t change the carpet! White walls and some photo frames which match the carpet will look lovely and classy.

Tillyteacup · 15/07/2023 11:31

Your downstairs walls look white or cream so the abrupt colour change doesn’t really go. I would match the wall to the downstairs wall and definitely paint the banister white.

jazzandh · 15/07/2023 11:35

If I had the money I would change the carpet if the wall colour is the part that you like. The carpet will always annoy you and ruin the look you had in your head (speaking from personal experience!)

You need a big sample of your paint and go to a carpet shop (or online) and get loads of suitable samples and keep looking and looking in different light, points on the stairs etc. I would go for a much paler grey, short pile carpet, or even a neutral colour, and paint the bannisters a white tone.
