Do my walls and carpet clash?

I spent a fortune on getting my walls painted and carpet on the stairs and now I think it clashes. The walls are pink/purple and the stairs is dark grey. Any ideas anyone?

I think it's the colour of the bannister that isn't quite right. I'd paint that white.

snoozingbaby1476 · 15/07/2023 11:37

I don't think there's anything wrong with the carpet to be honest.

Saschka · 15/07/2023 11:41

Not a fan of either colour, sorry!

I think you could get away with that carpet and either white or very pale grey walls. The wall colour is irredeemable IMO.

Notellinganyone · 15/07/2023 11:44

Walls are great but that’s a terrible carpet. Too dark and fluffy. I’d have gone for white painted stairs with a runner.

applesandmares · 15/07/2023 11:46

I like the paint colour and the carpet, but not together. I'd paint the walls white or something bright & neutral- but if that's a bit boring for you, change the carpet.

hugefanofcheese · 15/07/2023 11:51

Ooh interesting banister! Is it a mid century house? So unusual, I love it. I really like the idea of either polished wood or white painted stairs and a runner then you can go for any colour pretty much on the walls. A nice bright one like the pink works well with the banister rather than a neutral as the style is kind of playful

Overtiredagain · 15/07/2023 11:55

It's a very old house @hugefanofcheese , late 18th century. I used to have white painted stairs with a runner in the middle and then, just a few weeks ago, put that blasted carpet down. The kids love the fluffy feel of the carpet and they would be very annoyed with me if I got rid of it. But I'm very, very tempted. Any ideas anyone what i shold paint the banisters to make things a little better?

I don’t think it clashes but I think the wall colour isn’t great.

Nicoal · 15/07/2023 12:05

I think it’s fine for a normal family home. Just that with so much social media nowadays people expect stuff to look perfect

Don’t change the carpet! White walls and some photo frames which match the carpet will look lovely and classy.

This.

The walls should be white with that carpet colour. The photo frames matching will blend it nicely.

Firstreturn · 15/07/2023 12:14

How about using that pretty paint colour somewhere else in the house?

I can see how the carpet must be lovely to walk on, and I think it would look good with white or similar colour walls and matching banisters and skirting.

starrynight21 · 15/07/2023 12:18

Dark carpet shows every mark - I know that from bitter experience. I'd pull it up and put down some pale carpet.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 15/07/2023 12:39

A more silver grey carpet would look better IMO

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 15/07/2023 12:41

It’s even more silver/pale than the photo shows IRL

You had painted white stairs and runner in a period property and you put that carpet down?? The former sounds lovely. The carpet is ruining the look imo

MissyB1 · 15/07/2023 12:52

Carpets are expensive leave it alone. Change the wall colour, or even paper the walls. I have medium- dark grey carpet with beige walls, will try and add a pic.

There are too many colours going on
Oak floor
Mahogany coloured bannister
Dark grey stairs
Lilac walls

Together it makes it look like these are the "before" pictures. Now because of the extra colours the bannister isn't tieing in with anything and the lilac is making it looking dated.

Painting the bannister is a big nonreversable commitment though. These screenshot give an idea of complimentary tones with the dark wood.

I'm afraid I agree!

If you hadn't mentioned that it was a period property @Overtiredagain I'd have thought it was a fairly modern one with that choice of fitted stair carpet. Your previous set up for the stairs does sound nicer and more appropriate imho.

Our house is 400+ years old (although wasn't converted to a dwelling till 1850s so what few original features it has are much later) and we're considering what to put on our stairs at the moment. Currently we have them painted (Little Greene Lamp Black) with a varnished Art Nouveau style paper on the stair risers. The walls - and skirting/architraves - are F&B Inchyra Blue. In a previous (Georgian) house we had painted stairs with a flat weave runner which is what I'd do here if we weren't planning to sell soon 🙄

In the light of yours being a period house I would honestly seriously consider going back to something akin to what you had before....

LibertyLily · 15/07/2023 13:11

@Overtiredagain I just dug out a pic of the stairs at our previous house showing the runner etc. Imho it suited the style of property far better than a fitted carpet would have done, although it was far more cottage-y than your house obviously!

The old runner was horrible. We lived with it for 10 years as it was in the house when we bought it and this wretched carpet is the replacement. Some bright spark mis-advised me to have full length carpet, it was a crap idea.

We haven't yet painted the banister as I stopped everything when the carpet went down as I realised I was making a mess of things.
So I can paint the banister - that is essential, it needs painting and hasn't been painted yet - but what colour??!!

I'll probably live with the carpet, as it seems a waste, but I'm open to changing it if it wrecks my head (would probably wait a year or two).
I'm very, very annoyed with myself over the carpet and have come here trying to rectify the situation.

I think wall paper is a great idea but my husband would have a fit probably. He's lost all faith in me, understandably, since the arrival of the feckin carpet.

Thanks @LibertyLily that's lovely. I can see now I should have kept the runner idea. I was advised badly

Thanks @Sugarflowers they are lovely ideas. I guess I should tyr to rectify things and then, one day in the future, put a nice heather colour runner up the stairs?

I think the carpet is too dark and the wall too bright, we have greys carpet with pink walls, but went for more muted colours and I think it works well. I would paint the walls white with a touch of grey to complement the grey carpet, F&B wevet would be nice. We colour matched that and painted our woodwork in our living room with it. https://www.farrow-ball.com/paint-colours/wevet

Lilybetsey · 15/07/2023 13:19

The walls are a cool tone and the carpet is a warm grey. This is why it doesn't look 'right' ...

ItsMyUkelele · 15/07/2023 13:19

I agree with @Tillyteacup

White walls will make all the difference. The colour isn't really a 'hall/landing' colour.

The carpet looks expensive. Don't get rid of that!
