Does this look stupid? Stair runner edition.

I’ve always wanted stair runners and were decorating our new house so went for them. We’re due to move in this weekend and it was the last job, fitted today. I’m out and my husband was overseeing proceedings so he told me he’d made an executive decision 🙄 (although based on the fitter’s advice) who said that because of the type of carpet, bending it over the nose of the stair on the landings wouldn’t be a good idea so he fitted it to the riser on the two top steps. I think it looks stupid and ruins the look of it, DH thinks it looks fine. The black rods have still to be fitted don’t know if that’ll help or not. I’m pissed off because there’s been some issue with everything we’ve got done so I don’t know if I’m being especially annoyed because of the culmination, and also I’m just tired of the whole thing. So before I make him come back and fix it, fraying edges bedamned, is it ok enough just to leave as is? Part of me wants it how I had planned and part of me just can’t be arsed with any of it any more so I just want an objective opinion please. Thanks.

Eek. I'd definitely get that changed. I can't see why the fitter couldn't continue the runner the whole way up. This is ours - he should be able to do the same, no?

PS I love the look of your hallway though, looks fab otherwise! 🙂

SpikeyHatePotato · 20/05/2022 19:42

I’ve seen it done both ways, and don’t have any strong opinions on either. But you do, and you are paying for it, so tell them what you want!

Neu · 20/05/2022 19:44

Lazy fitting. Get him back!

RuthW · 20/05/2022 19:45

You can't leave it like that.

Firelogbridge · 20/05/2022 19:57

I actually like it and think it looks better than the example another poster posted.

Sprig1 · 20/05/2022 19:58

I prefer the way yours is laid to the orange example posted by another poster.

TinaTurtle · 20/05/2022 20:01

I think it looks really neat and smart. I think it would odd if you had a runner in a right angle
on the landing.

starsandstuff · 20/05/2022 20:02

What he said was it’s a natural weave carpet so when it’s cut the edges are very prone to fraying, plus it very stiff, so if you cut it then force the bend under you’ll see fraying edges. We couldn’t do the same as you @Hiphopskotch (which would have been my ideal) because the floorboards weren’t good enough on the landing so we went for the runner up to a full fitted landing. He did say to DH he’d do it the way I wanted if I wasn’t happy. But now I’m worried a) he’s right, but also b) it’s now been stuck and tacked to the stair so pulling it off will mean the paintwork all being fixed again, plus he’d have to add in one piece on each stair because he’s already cut it from the full length. So I’m afraid now it’s going to look shit no matter what I do.

I really like it! I do think though if it's not right for you it will annoy you every time you look at it! So maybe you should get him to do it your way!

linerforlife · 20/05/2022 20:12

Looks great! Whole hallway looks great!

NatriumChloride · 20/05/2022 20:16

Yours looks better than the orange bordered one posted by a PP.

LulusMiniEgg · 20/05/2022 20:18

i had this same concern when ours was fitted but don’t even notice now! Stick with it, it looks beautiful.

SingingSands · 20/05/2022 20:23

It looks lovely and I'd leave it as it is. It wouldn't look right if you trimmed it.

ChewtonBunny · 20/05/2022 20:25

I prefer yours to the orange one, definitely

TheDaydreamBelievers · 20/05/2022 20:27

I prefer yours to the other way

LampHat · 20/05/2022 20:28

I think it looks really good as it is 😊

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 20/05/2022 20:34

I much prefer the way yours is done to the alternative. I think it would look odd with a corner on that mid landing/step.

If you weren't thinking of a woven corner but of the runner going straight to the wall over the mid landing/step, then another unconnected piece going from the mid landing/step to the proper landing then I think that would look like you'd made a mistake and had to bodge it.

I think what you've got looks lovely.

gregdaviesiswonderful · 20/05/2022 20:35

Agree with most other posters-I think it looks lovely and better than the other way suggested!

But if it will bother you then change it!

MissMaple82 · 20/05/2022 20:35

It looks perfect. Doesn't look odd at all

CatSpeakForDummies · 20/05/2022 20:35

If you had it shaped in an L shape to go round the corner, I don't see how the zig zags would work. Would they be going horizontally on the stairs at a right angle?

I definitely think your current layout is better.

knittingaddict · 20/05/2022 20:41

OP, your carpet looks very neat and stylish. I much prefer it to the alternative.

alphons · 20/05/2022 20:47

I disagree with everyone!

I think you should keep it as it is, but add the black border on the landing(s). They, plus black rods will make it all look coherent. Right now, the landings look like they don’t belong with the stair runner.

Personally, I think the orange example someone posted looks a bit complicated / involved (and a trip hazard for someone with two left feet, like me!).

SarahAndQuack · 20/05/2022 20:47

I'm going to go against the grain - sorry, I think it looks awful.

I'm kind of the same. I don't think it looks right, at all.

But overall your house looks fab - enjoy, I'm envious!
