Does this look stupid? Stair runner edition.

I’ve always wanted stair runners and were decorating our new house so went for them. We’re due to move in this weekend and it was the last job, fitted today. I’m out and my husband was overseeing proceedings so he told me he’d made an executive decision 🙄 (although based on the fitter’s advice) who said that because of the type of carpet, bending it over the nose of the stair on the landings wouldn’t be a good idea so he fitted it to the riser on the two top steps. I think it looks stupid and ruins the look of it, DH thinks it looks fine. The black rods have still to be fitted don’t know if that’ll help or not. I’m pissed off because there’s been some issue with everything we’ve got done so I don’t know if I’m being especially annoyed because of the culmination, and also I’m just tired of the whole thing. So before I make him come back and fix it, fraying edges bedamned, is it ok enough just to leave as is? Part of me wants it how I had planned and part of me just can’t be arsed with any of it any more so I just want an objective opinion please. Thanks.

You need a runner bit up the top riser. It doesn’t looks like it’s matched otherwise. I think it looks a bit weird but clearly other people don’t. So maybe it doesn’t matter.

Baystard · 21/05/2022 08:44

I think it's fine because, even if you wanted to, you're not going to have the same look as the PPs orange one because you need the landing carpeted.

I agree that it would be a future annoyance or hazard if it started to fray at the end.

IMO your original plan wasn't going to work as soon as you had to carpet the landing.

Can you get a full length rod for across the top stair? That would make it all match in nicely.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 21/05/2022 08:46

It looks fine to me (but I don’t really get stair runners anyway).

This link also shows a pic of the landing carpet covering the bullnose of the top riser and the runner butting up to that, which is what OP wanted. With rods under the bullnose, it will solve the issue of the fraying carpet.

MerryMarigold · 21/05/2022 09:03

I love the carpet and can see the fitter's issue. I think this is the best compromise rather than frayed edges as this is what will happen at the top anyway (runner joining fitted carpet). I think you'll get used to it very quickly, it's just not what you expected. Don't bodge it around now.

Summersdreaming · 21/05/2022 09:06

I've always wondered what happens at the top of a stair runner when it meets the hallway.. do you carry the stair carpet on through the hall, so creating the same effect as your corner section? Or change to a new carpet.

I looked at them before we viewed this house and realised the stairs are concrete and it would look crap. I'd love a nice wooden staircase and it looks lovely OP.

Hiphopskotch · 20/05/2022 19:38

Eek. I'd definitely get that changed. I can't see why the fitter couldn't continue the runner the whole way up. This is ours - he should be able to do the same, no?

I don't like this at all, personally, please don't copy this idea op !

HouseyHouse21 · 21/05/2022 09:14

Another vote for leaving it as it is.

ATadConfused · 21/05/2022 09:27

@starsandstuff congratulations on your new house! I'm sorry you've had so many hassles! It's not as much 'fun' as many think!! (IMO).

I hope the move goes smoothly this weekend.

at least being the stairs (not a room with furniture!) there's no huge rush to get it sorted.

I don't think it looks 'stupid' and I think 'in oerson' no one will really notice/ think about it. But if it's going to bother YOU then get it changed. What's the worst that could happened?? In a year or so it starts to fray and you need to get a small piece replaced??

I would have expected the edges runner to go under the bullnose of the last step and an edged square on the landing (more like the orange one, but a bigger square) it should all be edged, so no fraying.

they'd be coming back to change it if it was mine!!

the fitter & the supplier can argue out at whose expense between them.

but it doesn't look 'stupid' and I live the carpet/tiles/paint. It's lovely!!

starsandstuff · 21/05/2022 11:13

Thanks all. (@GetThatHelmetOn Im a big girl and don’t need reassurance on something I like. I really do think it looks off, I was livid when I saw the pics but couldn’t work out if it’s just cos I’m generally sick to the back teeth of workmen doing things that piss me off and weren’t what I paid for. Don’t start me on the electrician.)

I’m going to get him back to talk about it and how much of a mess changing it would cause, and also the fact that as pointed out it’s not fitted under each bullnose which I hadn’t noticed - I still haven’t got to see it in person. I think he’ll say the same thing about it not being the right carpet for that, in which case I’m going to go back to the company to ask why they sold me a stair runner that can’t actually be fitted as such. They deal only in stair runners so it’s not like I picked a random carpet and tried to make it work.

Thanks for the feedback. Enough people think it’s bad that I think I’m justified complaining and not just being overly picky, and enough people think it’s ok so that if I have to love with it I can probably make my peace with it. Also I am NEVER moving again.

It looks fine but it would annoy me that it wasn't what I had wanted so I think you should discuss getting it changed. That aside, I absolutely love your hallway, I wish I had the 'vision' some people like you have for decorating my own house. It works have never occurred to me to branch out from boring white bannisters for example, and I love the carpet/tiles combo. Enjoy your lovely new home 😊

Thank you so much, but all my vision is taken from the Houzz site so really all credit belongs to the people who did it all first and kindly put up pictures for me to steal 😁

@starsandstuff I don’t think it looks awful but I wouldn’t be happy with the top risers. I have a similar carpet that is fitted as a runner on the stairs and fully fitted on the half landing/landing. I originally wanted the half landing fitted as a runner but my local carpet shop said similar to your fitter, if you cut the carpet on the diagonal it will fray and they refused to do it. However they told me in the shop that it wasn’t possible and offered solutions.

I can’t understand why they haven’t fitted it under the bullnose of each top step. This is a rubbish photo of mine (mid decorating) which is how I think it should be done.

Thanks for that, that’s exactly what I was looking for and what I was promised. Also been to the house tonight and there are lots of bits about the fitting I’m not happy with. Will def be going back to the shop. Ps I love your panelling!

MerryMarigold · 22/05/2022 17:43

OP, your carpet looks a lot thicker than Tattie's and I expect that's what the shop would say. Maybe compare measurements?

stuntbubbles · 21/05/2022 07:55

It looks awful, sorry. You don’t have to continue the runner on the landing necessarily, that can be full carpet and won’t look odd; but for the top riser to be full carpet and the rest runner looks terrible and so obviously a mistake.

Our fitter tried to do the same thing for the same reasons and I made him do it properly. No issues with fraying.

The orange-edged runner looks great too, for that poster!

I agree with this. The fully carpeted landing should end at floor level and the runner should come up that final riser.
Your house is stunning though, so beautiful!
