Does this look stupid? Stair runner edition.

I’ve always wanted stair runners and were decorating our new house so went for them. We’re due to move in this weekend and it was the last job, fitted today. I’m out and my husband was overseeing proceedings so he told me he’d made an executive decision 🙄 (although based on the fitter’s advice) who said that because of the type of carpet, bending it over the nose of the stair on the landings wouldn’t be a good idea so he fitted it to the riser on the two top steps. I think it looks stupid and ruins the look of it, DH thinks it looks fine. The black rods have still to be fitted don’t know if that’ll help or not. I’m pissed off because there’s been some issue with everything we’ve got done so I don’t know if I’m being especially annoyed because of the culmination, and also I’m just tired of the whole thing. So before I make him come back and fix it, fraying edges bedamned, is it ok enough just to leave as is? Part of me wants it how I had planned and part of me just can’t be arsed with any of it any more so I just want an objective opinion please. Thanks.

I agree that it looks awful and needs fitting like the orange one.

lisavanderpumpscloset · 20/05/2022 21:19

I like it. Looks quirky

lisavanderpumpscloset · 20/05/2022 21:20

@alphons 's idea is a good one. Add the black border if you can, it'll look more finished

Agreed!

Can you take a pic of the top of the stairs? I can't make up my mind.

Your hall looks beautiful, love the wallpaper in the downstairs loo & the tiles. You have excellent taste.

starsandstuff · 20/05/2022 21:56

Thanks for all the feedback, although it’s as divided as me and DH so I’m no wiser! We’re not in the house yet so I can’t take any pics of the top @eatyourcrustspls except for the other one I posted and this one from the top down (which probably doesn’t help) all of which I was sent by himself. I haven’t seen it irl yet. But thanks everyone who likes the hall in general, that takes some of the edge off at least 🙂

Lazy fitting, they can do a runner at a right angle! I would definitely be getting it changed. It doesn’t flow right and looks stilted.

SleeplessWB · 20/05/2022 22:40

I think it looks really nice. I'm jealous of your lovely hall!

SunnyShiner · 20/05/2022 22:53

I think it looks odd but it would annoy me less than raggedy edges so I think I'd keep it.

Mintyt · 21/05/2022 05:05

It's really lovely, very tasteful I would leave it as is

GetThatHelmetOn · 21/05/2022 05:11

I think it is stupid to pretend to think it looks stupid. If you want reassurance ask for it, you know that’s the sort of thing that is fashionable these days and that you can find on any interior design magazine / website.

clumperoo · 21/05/2022 06:16

It looks lovely. Is keep it as is. The orange version looks weird imo. Sorry

HappyHappyHermit · 21/05/2022 06:24

I think yours looks really good, I wouldn't change it.

Imnotanumber · 21/05/2022 06:42

Plenty of stairs have a turn in them. It seems unlikely that the carpet doesn't come with option for a runner at the corner. I can imagine one with a diagonal line where the weave of the carpet turns at a right angle. Actually, I don't think I fully understand the issue.

But your black banisters are gorgeous!

TheLadyofShalott1 · 21/05/2022 06:48

Sorry to the PP who also showed her photo, but I think that yours looks lovely and classy, and hers just doesn't. Yours looks finished properly and I am glad for your sake that the floor boards under the flat corner are bad, as any other way of carpeting it would look very strange.

However, I am not impressed that the carpet fitter is saying that in effect, your stair runner is not fit for purpose, and was therefore (IMO) sold to you under false pretences. It looks lovely OP, changing it to how you think you want it sounds rather risky, and what will happen afterwards when you realise it looked much better the other way around?

cookiemonster2468 · 21/05/2022 06:48

I think it looks fine but if you want it changed then get them back. The idea of ragged edges isn't appealing though.

It sounds like the wrong carpet was chosen for this job somewhere down the line - sounds like a lack of research/ advice at an early stage?

hopeishere · 21/05/2022 06:54

I think to looks fine. I'm think black stair rods will be too much with it though.

Mummyoflittledragon · 21/05/2022 07:36

I think it looks really good and not a trip hazard, whereas continuing a trimmed carpet, especially with a corner potentially would be. No way would I have a trip hazard on stairs. Thus I much prefer the look to the example posted by Hiphop. And that wouldn’t work so well for you as you don’t have 2 stairs leading off.

I would leave your stairs exactly as is and not trim the landings in black as this will draw attention to the width discrepancy. I also wouldn’t put stair rods up. If anything, either of these things will make the half landing look odd when right now it is in keeping.

ItoldyouIwastrouble · 21/05/2022 07:47

It looks beautiful! I'd leave it.

Imtoooldforallthis · 21/05/2022 07:47

Two things, I think the top riser before the turn needs to be the runner and I would be having them back to fit the runner under the edge of the bull nose on each step as it will stretch and become loose on the edge of each step.

Imtoooldforallthis · 21/05/2022 07:49

It looks fine but it would annoy me that it wasn't what I had wanted so I think you should discuss getting it changed. That aside, I absolutely love your hallway, I wish I had the 'vision' some people like you have for decorating my own house. It works have never occurred to me to branch out from boring white bannisters for example, and I love the carpet/tiles combo. Enjoy your lovely new home 😊

stuntbubbles · 21/05/2022 07:55

It looks awful, sorry. You don’t have to continue the runner on the landing necessarily, that can be full carpet and won’t look odd; but for the top riser to be full carpet and the rest runner looks terrible and so obviously a mistake.

Our fitter tried to do the same thing for the same reasons and I made him do it properly. No issues with fraying.

The orange-edged runner looks great too, for that poster!

Thissucksmonkeynuts · 21/05/2022 08:34

I'd say it does work like that, it looks cohesive and planned, but I totally get how it isn't the look you had in mind.
I love the orange one, it is much more my style, but wouldn't be right with what I can see of your decor.

Hollyhocksarenotmessy · 21/05/2022 08:38

I think an L shaped runner wouldn't look good, but agree the final risers should be the runner. I'd have had a square on the landing but not the full landing size, so that you still have a floorboard edge but in a simple shape.

I agree strongly with the poster who said the carpet needs to be fitted in under the lip of each step. If you don't, after a couple of years the carpet loosens and rounds off over the edge and definitely becomes slippy, speaking from experience here.
