These are all a little less in your face. But if you go with the original carpet I'd say Cane!!

Mumdiva99 · 30/01/2022 08:01

I like the duck green with it. The cane also looks nice.

If you can't have your dream carpet up the stairs once in your life then what's it all for? Can I ask.....do they make the carpet in special stairs width or do you have to buy a full length of standard width carpet? What do you do with the rest of it? (Just curious).

I think Cane is the best match, followed by the Duck green. Buy bright lights for your hallway though!

I know you've said your husband is insistent on a tartan carpet but does it have to be those colours? Some of the other colours may give you more scope for less gloomy wall colours. The purple would match well with a light blue.

I’ve got samples of the lilac one too actually.

He is persuadable, generally leaving me to make these choices but I am being swayed by his love for the traditional colours.

The lilac and lighter ones fail the poorly wiped shoes / split tea (me) tests though.

I think cane, duck, or raddiciio would all go well. IMO cane is the best option as the others look more “wintertime”. But until you try samples...

I love the carpet! What about one mustard feature wall?

Chewbecca · 01/02/2022 12:44

Glad to hear someone else loves it!
I thought feature walls were a bit of a bad thing these days but you have got me wondering.
Cane in the hallway (dark-ish as interior) and duck egg (green) on the stairs and landing (light due to big picture window).
Or some other combination?

I think with a multi and brightly coloured carpet it’s not really wise to habe multi coloured walls too. It will all be too much, I’d keep to one colour throughout to be honest.

Chewbecca · 01/02/2022 13:12

Good point!

This. It's quite a dominating carpet, so I think you don't want to throw an awful lot of other colours at it. Also, if you're painting the downstairs hall, the stairs and the upstairs landing or landings all the same colour, it can be quite a tricky one to call on, as typically you have different amounts and directions of light, and different light sources from window facing in different directions.

I recently chose a paint colour for a downstairs hall, stairway walls and landings over two upper storeys, and it was quite tough, because the types and amounts of light vary so much throughout, and I found that the original Tikkarilla putty-colour I chose looked strangely pink in shadowy areas, and was going to look odd with the stairway runner we're going to have.

KedgeIsland · 01/02/2022 13:19

So it ended up being F and B Dropcloth.

Fairylightsongs · 01/02/2022 13:31

What about these carpets if you really like tartan? They are much more muted and would be easier to paint round, and less dominant?

Or maybe something striped?

The lighter tartans fail the muddy shoe and split tea test - I really want something that doesn’t show stains!

Stripes - no, it’s not tartan!
