Naff things in other people's houses (Tongue in Cheek)

I know that it is a question of each to his own etc but what do you find naff in other people's homes? I was invited round to neighbour's today to gawp at their new gas barbecue that is the size of a Challenger tank. They were terribly proud of it and the husband was lovingly caressing it whilst the wife was squealing in anticipation of all the hot sausage her man was going to serve her! All I could think was 'Why? Why? Why?' What do you find naff in other people's homes and why?

Fake plants and fake flowers are just dust catcher.

PuppyMonkey · 26/06/2021 11:46

Gravy.

I’m not personally offended by this thread but it is classist. The things people are poking fun at and mocking are furnishings and decor that would usually be associated with working class homes. Feels a bit off to me somehow.

thegreylady · 26/06/2021 11:47

Almost everything in my house and very little in other people’s .

flippertygibbit · 26/06/2021 11:48

You do realise that 'tongue in cheek' means being insincere so yabu in creating this post, you're just being a cow, at least have the balls to own it!

Minezatea · 26/06/2021 11:49

What I find naff is people in socks or slippers at home during the day.

I have a number of foot problems including plantar fasciitis, which means I can't really walk on wooden floors without well padded slippers on. Are people really judging me for that? how odd.

Ninkanink · 26/06/2021 11:49

And family photos the only decor on the wall. The "cake smash" pro photos are so bad they are nearly good!

What, why?? We wear slippers or socks at home to keep us warm...that’s what they’re for, surely? Or do you mean that they should only be worn in the evening?

Meh, I’ll continue wearing whatever I need to to be comfortable.

thegreylady · 26/06/2021 11:49

Incidentally why on earth would anyone NOT wear slippers or socks at home in the day time. I can’t wait to remove my shoes (and socks) and put slippers on.

Crinkle77 · 26/06/2021 11:50

Inspirational quotes on walls, velvet sofa's and headboards.

I don't think that's true at all. I visit houses of all social demographics for work. It isn't working class houses that have wicker hearts on their cupboard doors, shiny, shiny, kitchen islands, slogans on the walls, or most of the other tropes on here. Of the things on this thread described as naff, I'd say they are about 80% middle class.

Can we start another thread on mixed metaphors? 😈

I love being barefoot at home when it’s warm enough.
OrchidLass · 26/06/2021 11:52

Hot tubs. I just don't see the appeal in them at ALL.

Bars in the garden. That seems to have become a 'thing'.

Anything velour

guessing it has a lot to do with the various lockdown and restrictions.

Crinkle77 · 26/06/2021 11:55

I hate wearing slippers. I have thick bed socks that I wear round the house.

thegreylady · 26/06/2021 11:55

A house without books is scary. What do people do if they don’t read?

I am sure a lot of the things described can be seen on photos published in various magazines, belonging to people who have A LOT of money.

Naff Christmas deserves an entire thread!

Me too! It's very freeing and I go outside bare foot too. Only trouble is my feet end up filthy 😂

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 26/06/2021 11:57

@kindaclassy

I am curious, if you know you will get offended by a thread like this, why do you even bother to read it?

The title couldn't be clearer Grin

If I would be offended I wouldn't have opened it. I too am curious about the sort of people who delight in mocking. In my experience, they live to do this but, when others make fun of or belittle the things they or their children have or do, they don't find it so funny.

I think there's a type of inadequacy that tends to creating this sort of thread and adding to the pile. It's nothing new, it's 'unpopular opinions' and I suppose that's the sort of thread that makes a certain type happy.

We're all free to post where we want, I wanted to post my mild disgust at such moronic, pointless spite. There.

N4ish · 26/06/2021 11:57

@MissLucyEyelesbarrow

Fair enough, maybe I’m assuming too much from my own experience. None of the middle class people I know would dream of having slogans on the wall or shiny kitchen islands so maybe I’ve assumed those things are working class, happy to be corrected!

Why not buying shoes that fit? Even if you prefer "house shoes" that don't get used outside, slobbing in slippers or socks is just ...naff. Each to their own.

Every single one of my examples are definitely the opposite. The middle class instamums who are constantly redecorating and repainting every 5 mins with their 'gifted' promotions, as if they are setting the bar that we should all aspire to in home decor. Naff, naff, naff.
N4ish · 26/06/2021 12:01

@kindaclassy

People can have a lot of money and still be working class, the two things are not necessarily correlated.

Use my kindle. Surely you don't continuously reread all of the books on your bookshelf and must run out of room?
