I'm really keen to have the ceiling in our (large) spare room painted chocolate brown. A nice, warm brown. The walls are taupe. I'm going for a warm, cozy vibe. So far I haven't found the perfect chocolate brown.

So I'm hoping someone here has a (chocolate) brown ceiling and won't mind sharing a picture. Thank you!

Won't that make the room feel like a cave and very claustrophobic?

Pangwin · 12/10/2020 14:16

This sounds monstrous 😆

Still, I'm sure someone will be along shortly to prove me wrong with some lovely photos of their brown ceilings.

There must be a nice seedy pub local to you that would let you walk across its sticky, swirly patterned carpet to look at its brown ceiling. Before 10pm, obv.

Failing that, check out the manky Belfast Hotel in Season 2 of The Fall. Red not brown, but same effect.

Those are my associations anyway!

Rockandgrohl · 12/10/2020 14:18

Oh wow 😬 I didnt know people painted ceilings anything other than PBW!!!

GoogleWhacked · 12/10/2020 14:19

My first thought was tobacco stained 🤮
Sorry OP, I'm not getting it

Pangwin · 12/10/2020 14:21

Does your house have high ceilings because if it's a bog standard new build/estate house it's going to feel very oppressive having a dark ceiling.

Also, if you really want a dark ceiling then there are nicer dark warm colours like navy, deep purple, warm toned greys.

Thought it was going to be a thread to make op feel about her grubby ceilings. Painting them brown on purpose ...that's a no from me

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 12/10/2020 14:23

I suppose it could work if you live in a mansion?

Found this on pinterest. Don't know what colour it is, but is this what you're going for?

Arrrghhh I can't get the picture to upload!
Anyway we've got a Victorian house so high ceilings and picture rails, our bedroom ceiling and the chunk of wall that comes down to the picture rail is painted in Dulux Cookie Dough.
I like it, obviously, but the stiff necks we got and the absolute faff of needing 3 coats means I'd have kept it even if I'd hated 😄

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 12/10/2020 14:24

LOL - x-post

giletrouge · 12/10/2020 14:24

Lol. Must be the only brown celing around!

InMySpareTime · 12/10/2020 14:32

I wanted to paint a chimney breast Chocolate brown, but changed my mind when I started painting.
It was less "feature wall", more "dirty protest".
Be aware that chocolate brown is largely indistinguishable from smeared shit brown.

ErrolTheDragon · 12/10/2020 14:35

The hallway pictured above would look so much better if it wasn't those horrible colours.
Brown is warm and cosy if it's a cuddly dog, not a ceiling colour.

HasaDigaEebowai · 12/10/2020 14:35

Im not sure you'll get many photos OP.

If it helps all of our ceilings when we moved in were painted the same colour as the walls (mainly magnolia but in some cases a stone colour). We have repainted them all white and the house looks so much better for it.

SweetAlmondOil · 12/10/2020 14:42

Can I stomp my feet because everyone things it's a crappy idea???? I know it's unusual but it's a very large room, and the ceiling is quite high. I'm trying to achieve something similar to this picture - don't you think it's lovely and cosy?

DM painted her sitting room brown (walls, not ceiling) a few years ago. It's a massive, light room but looked horrific.

The room was nicknames they bowel' until it went back to cream.

Sorry, op.

EerilyDeleted · 12/10/2020 14:48

Bad choice of words (crappy!). I think it might look cosy on winter evenings with fire lit etc but during daylight it will look dark and gloomy, even in summer.

HasaDigaEebowai · 12/10/2020 14:54

Sorry OP, its not for me. It looks dated. Just make the room cosy with lighting and texture.

Tigger03 · 12/10/2020 14:58

I really don’t like it. I have seen some darker ceilings that can look nice, if you have really high ceilings and a light room, but not brown.

pinkbalconyrailing · 12/10/2020 14:59

we have brown ceilings in a cloakroom, aka wood panelling. it's lowered as well.
fells like it's closing on on you.

currently saving to get rid of it. theceiling will be light coloured, possibly a light blueish gray, if we can get this in a paint suitable for a damp room.

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 12/10/2020 14:59

I think in real life without the twilight/wintery cosy lighting that admittedly lovely room would look less “Galaxy Advert” and more “Trying to disguise your 250 Benson&Hedges habit”.

Maybe go for a brown-greige slightly darker than your taupe instead? A cappuccino or stone colour?

Onekidnoclue · 12/10/2020 15:00

Sorry OP. don’t think it’s a great idea. There are other (better) colours

GiraffeNecked · 12/10/2020 15:00

The last 2 houses we bought - first had gloss green ceiling - I cursed whoever painted it that colour - but on the other hand I think it meant we got the house cheap. Took 5 coats to get to white. It lifted the room.

Most recent house - also had a green ceiling - this one only took 3 coats, again though I think it's why we got the house cheaper.

There's a reason most ceilings are white...

Zoflorabore · 12/10/2020 15:02

I actually thought that 20 odd people had sent you a picture of their brown ceiling when I saw the thread Grin

I think you’re pretty much on your own here op.
