Interior design help needed, with pictures

I really struggle with interior design and I think I have made yet another style mistake.

I have an awkward long living room with double bays and a fireplace in the middle. I have been struggling for a while to decide how to furnish it as I had a track record of making expensive errors.

I have recently purchased the attached blue chair and footstool and it doesn't seem to look right at all. The rest of the room is grey (sofa, item of furniture and paint behind the fire). Should I cut my losses and try again or is there something I could do to make this work?

Ignore the TV - it is to be changed to something more discreet.

Add some navy accents around your room or consider painting an appropriate wall navy.

Please please keep the chair.

The chair is not a mistake and you have 'set' it beautifully. I would say you need window dressings and wall colour *if not renting. Follow 'modern rugs' on Insta for inspiration. A huge rug would also look great there, although its hard to say without seeing the rest of the room. If funds allow I might also have a much bigger light fitting. The chair is most definitely not a mistake. It looks lovely.

Maybe a large painting or collection of paintings to the radiator wall?
It all looks a bit white so a few more splashes of colour/interest would link the chair in better.

It's absolutely gorgeous, fits perfectly. I would have a blue based piece of art on the walls to go with it

You just need to let it settle into it’s environment. I also agree you could add a couple of navy accents.

It’s quite a big piece with dainty light fittings around. Maybe that’s what is unbalancing the look? Perhaps try a larger lamp fitting? .

I think what you can't see at the minute as I can't get any other photos to upload is how it doesn't seem to go with the rest of the room.

I do need window dressings but too scared to pick anything and maybe a rug but it such an awkward shaped room with a huge gap in the middle.

Maybe the table needs to be chunkier?

Is it ok to put a rug on a carpet as that might help pull the areas together?

I have lived in this house for over two years and pretty much ignored this room and left it only half furnished as I am that unconfident with purchasing furnishings. I have had some spectacular disasters in the past (remembering the time I had a room painted 3 different colours within one week before reverting back to white)

The lamp is new too Atalune, but yes, looking at the pictures it does look small. As does the ceiling light which looks much larger in real life.

Don't laugh, the chair on the right is from the garden, we were existing with garden chairs inside as I couldn't decide what to buy. Any ideas?

If you have a big room OP you need to think big design wise. For the windows, for example, get curtains with big swags or if that's not your thing, a bold pattern. Have them hung high up and quite far to the sides of the window. For rugs, but big enough to cover the majority of the room (or 'area') if you are splitting the room's purpose (eg one half is sofas and other half is dining table. I adore the chair and footstool, the colour and fabric are divine. Go with that as a 'look' - dramatic contrast, plush fabrics etc.

As others have said, it's a lovely chair and velvet + blue quite 'in'.
Hard to comment without seeing the rest of the room but I agree you need to make sure it all pulls together - so toning/matching blue accents elsewhere

Oh - just seen your other pic and you have other blue accents - good! A rug would help - is the orangey colour your other accent?

I think you need a gallery wall using your accents of blue and grey. Gallery wall of art btw (not photos) I would spread it over the walls behind the chair or alternatively, a dark wood bookstand with sculpture /books

Be careful about any rug you put on a carpet as the rugs 'walk' so it moves anbrucks around heavy furniture
E.You can get nonslip stuff to put between but it spoils the carpet and the rug just moves more slowly.
I love the chair to but it just needs balancing with the walls.
I had a house with a long narrow room too and had a giant cheese plant behind where your chair is.

This is the other side of the room. The room is effectively single purpose but too long so it feels like it doesn't 'work' as one space. I will try to get some better pictures tomorrow to further demonstrate the issue

Big curtains are not really my thing wine but I see what you mean about thinking big.

I'm not sure I have any accent colours palahvah most of my house is navy blue (walls in entrance reception), grey, white or pale pink. I only bought the cushion on the chair as the chair was displayed with it (better than choosing my own combination was the thinking there)

Thanks for the rug too hotter, and yes, maybe a large plant, it's very green outside my windows at this time of year and I have a few dotted around elsewhere

It can be pulled together if you dress the room to match the new chair which is your main eye catching piece. Navy and orange are your accent colours, tidy up sofa with throws/cushions to compliment chair, the chair is now the main item, it is gorgeous.
Definitely get curtains!

Thank you for cropping ohhelpohnoitsa, it has made me realise that the chair and immediate surroundings look ok in isolation, I just need to tie in the rest of the room.
