Are my lounge curtains hideous? (photos included)

Be honest, I can take it. They cost a fair whack due to the bay window, and I only bought them three years ago.

We're now shopping for new sofas, and are struggling to find anything to go with the curtains. It is then I realised I don't actually like them any more (not sure I ever did!) and would like to change them after getting new furniture.

Though God knows what I'd go for; I'm useless at these things

Please help...

They're quite old fashioned. The length is pretty bad too. They should either skim the window sill or be full length.

You've got blinds so why not take down the curtains to give you a new perspective on the room? I'd then concentrate on buying a sofa you like before thinking about the windows?

Are you going to try selling them, as they were expensive? They might be right up someone else's street.

No I don't like them either. Tbh though I think it's maknly the length that makes them look old fashioned. But then I like mine super long and 'puddling' on the floor. I would get your new sofa first then choose some long and neutral curtains to blend in. And ditch that blind too

I have the same sort of sofas as you and very similar cushions, and have recently got these curtains. They look fab.

The house is a 1930's semi, which we moved into four years ago. It's my first house so first time choosing the decor. I was trying to be sympathetic to the house, and called it "nursing home chic" at the time but have since realised that you don't have to have old looking curtains in an old-ish property.

I think floor-length would be better too, but worry about the dust gathering due to the wooden floors? And yeah the cost (think these ones were over £300 and that was in the sale).

Good idea about taking them down to get a fresh perspective of the room, I also think removing the rug would help. Bit bonkers that the 'colour scheme' stemmed from a £40 rug from IKEA (and which the previous owners had, so we just copied them ! Told you I was rubbish at all this, no creativity or imagination).

I'm 34 btw, and not a granny yet!

Any thoughts on what colour sofas/curtains to get then you lovely lot? We have two small boys. I really want cream/mink fabric; everyone says I'm mad.

I think it's mainly the length that put me off. The pattern isnt to my taste but it's not awful either. Floor length would definitely look better

i think the room pic reflects the 30s semi feel so would play on that if you want to keep the curtains which look ok to me, maybe just warm it up with some nice chocolate rugs

if it were my house I would go for some floor length neutral curtains but i don't think they're that bad

Not my bag, I'm afraid! I resisted DH's wish for curtains in our bay windows and we now have some very plain cream but very warm blinds with blackout for each window. Easy to match furniture to and they don't take over the room.

I like them, would of had them to the floor though. I like heavy quality curtains.

I like them but I agree about the length. Take them down and just keep looking at the window for a week or so. That's all I usually do when something isn't quite right and then I look for inspiration.

Yes they should reach the floor but you can make it that they skim the floor if your house is dusty rather than pool on the floor.

I agree with taking them down and living without them for a bit, we have no curtains in our house as just feel they dominate a room and draw light from it so we have just blinds,

South we're trying to get away from chocolate brown (had the sofas for years and are looking forward to a change). Thanks though! Looks like neutral floor-length might be the way to go.

I think the fact that they're pencil pleat doesn't help matters, but don't know how expensive it would be to get rid of the plastic track and get a pole fitted?

They would look Ok in a more colourful setting but as stand alone against very neutral background, they are kind of hmm.

You could sell them for quite a lot on ebay, and get something nicer, or keep them and paint your walls dark pink and beige and make it all pretty

if you ditch them, ditch the rug too. You could have a lovely fluffy flokati rug there.

Go for dark sofas with small children, plain dark grey. Check out Loaf or Sofa Sofa. You can still have cream or mink curtains but keep any patterns simple! Sofas and curtains are the big expense in a lounge so keep them neutral and simple then you can have fun with cushions, wall coverings etc. Curtains should definitely come to the floor though!

They do date the room, I think if you removed the curtains and just had blinds the room would look fresher. You can buy made to measure blinds (roller, wooden Venetian) quite reasonably on sites like 247 blinds which are then much cheaper to change if you Want a change (like me) Do you use Pinterest? I waste hours looking at that you can put in options like grey sofa or cream and just sort through the looks you like. We've had cream sofas when the children were babies/toddlers and it was fine but they had removable covers so easy to wash but I've gone off that look now.

Looks like we're definitely ditching the curtains and rug then, and going for sofas we love. Not sure about dark grey as worry grey is a bit...officey? Do you think I should forget about the age of the house when changing the look?

We live in a 1950's semi with a similar shaped bay window (perhaps not as deep as yours) and we just have blinds. I think they are Roman blinds, the ones that are material but concertina to be flat as you pull them up. I think curtains would have looked too fussy, our front room is quite small.

I think a simple blindblind or simple plain floor length curtains would look nice.
