Are my lounge curtains hideous? (photos included)

Be honest, I can take it. They cost a fair whack due to the bay window, and I only bought them three years ago.

We're now shopping for new sofas, and are struggling to find anything to go with the curtains. It is then I realised I don't actually like them any more (not sure I ever did!) and would like to change them after getting new furniture.

Though God knows what I'd go for; I'm useless at these things Sad

Please help...

We have a very similar bay and have floor length curtains that 'puddle' slightly. We have fixed curtain holdbacks rather than tie backs, as I always think tie backs look a little droopy.

hmcAsWas · 02/03/2016 14:32

All I can say OP is thank God you are changing them

Paulat2112 · 02/03/2016 14:36

No i don't like them. I don't think they are hideous, i am sure they must be some people's cup of tea :) Full length would look better, although might look nice with nothing?

BretonStripe · 02/03/2016 20:43

Hello all.

ohfuck - I have zero sewing skills unfortunately (can't even do a button! Blush)

wowfudge - I'll look at magic screen blinds - thank you. We're definitely going to focus on getting the new sofas first. That in itself is a pain, as they're such a big expense and our minds have been boggled with visits to sofa stores.

tits - we took our hotch potch of pictures down last year when we had the whole place re-painted. Any suggestions of what to put on the walls please?

I'll try and find a photo of what they looked like without the blinds...

Here you go. I always thought the window looked cold with just blinds (they're a pale grey/duck egg blue colour).

Now thinking they'd look better just blinds in the spring/summer (maybe with the simple floor-length sheer voil type curtains from IKEA), and put the curtains back up in the winter!

They are too short.

Flumplet · 02/03/2016 20:55

Bit dated pattern wise, and would look better down to the floor.

BretonStripe · 02/03/2016 20:56

Yeah, we've ascertained that Primal Grin They've been up three years now...floor length would've cost too much, and MIL said I didn't want them at the sill as they wouldn't keep the heat in adequately? Live and learn I guess!

I would find some material you like and get someone to make them. The quality you will get will be far better than readymade curtains which will never fit or feel right.

The curtains in my lounge I had made 17 years ago and I still absolutely love them and they look as good as the day they were hung. They are quite plain though... plain cream with a raised pattern and a pelmet with some piping.

Could you think of something like that and then pick out an accent colour from some piping for the rest of the room?

BretonStripe · 02/03/2016 21:19

They are made-to-measure Roussette - I chose the fabric three years ago, and chose the thermal lining too, meaning they're really heavy. Cost a fair whack too. Just don't think I've ever liked them fickle being that I am I'm a bit rubbish at these things as you can tell...

www.curtainfactoryoutlet.co.uk

Cheap curtain fabric.

PrimalLass · 02/03/2016 21:33

Yeah, we've ascertained that Primal

I know, but I hate short curtains and wanted it known Grin

Roussette · 02/03/2016 21:46

Ooops sorry Breton I thought I read they were readymade!

I would just go for something plainer because patterned curtains tie you so much. When they are plain, you can change the room fairly cheaply - paint, cushions, ornaments etc. Good luck with it! I'm pretty useless too, which is why I go for plain!

BretonStripe · 02/03/2016 22:06

I've made a mental note Primal Wink

Roussette I really wish I had gone plain now, but thought at the time that it would be too much of a block colour, and the pattern would break it up a bit. Agree with the other posters now that actually they dominate the room in a bad way. They're going on eBay!

Now for the headache of choosing sofas; definitely going for plain there! Despite everyone saying I'll be mad, due to owning a 2yo and 5yo. Going to stay well away from big patterns for a while Grin

ggirl · 02/03/2016 22:08

yes they are hideous

hairymuffet · 03/03/2016 23:55

I'm not keen on the curtains, however you could get a pelmet made out of them.
Then just have plain floor length curtains underneath ??

Fluffycloudland77 · 04/03/2016 07:12

Wowfudge

Thanks for the miracle screen blind tip, just what I need for the living room!.

Gracey79 · 04/03/2016 07:14

The pattern reminds me of a caravan we used to stay in as kids Grin
I'm very much a plain and as inoffensive/unmemorable as possible girl

Fluffycloudland77 · 04/03/2016 07:16

Magic I mean.

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 04/03/2016 07:17

You have a similar colour scheme to my sitting room and I used to have some very similar curtains. Gold with a red floral/swirl pattern thing going on.

Ive recently replaced with plain orange curtains from curtains2go which I was a bit unsure of but live them now. Will take a photo later.

I hate curtain choosing and I had a thread in here with swatches for advice.

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 04/03/2016 07:19

I think it's these that I got.

You need floor length for sure.

BretonStripe · 05/03/2016 20:20

Thought I'd update to let you know we chose our sofas today! Went for a natural stone colour. Will take curtains down when they arrive in a couple of months time, then look at getting a rug. Am thinking of going for a duck-egg blue-ish colour, as that's what colour the blinds are.

Will think about new curtains again next year I think, but will def go for floor-length and lighter (both fabric and colour).

Thanks for all your input.

This is what the new sofas will be (different colour though).

Thought some of you might like an update! We have new sofas, and as of today, a rug and floor-length white curtains/drapes (thank you IKEA!) which need a lot of taking up. I keep playing around with the cushions, and not sure I like the blue ones

Now just to find some art for the walls, and get a new mirror for over the fireplace. Thanks for everyone's ideas - I love my new living room! Smile

Whoops, added a photo of sofa when old curtains were still up! Ignore that one (why is there no option to delete a photo once posted?!).
