Posting on behalf of DB who was originally going to Hawaii which ticked most boxes: -romantic, beautiful, exotic, but with a city so there's stuff to do.
Sadly it also ticks the Rather Expensive box so he's exploring other options, so I'd love to know what y'all got up to, MNers
TIA

I havent been on honeymoon but on of my friends did 5 days in venice/florence at superswanky hotels and it looked amazing - same price in the end as a maldives type job too.

fizzpops · 29/04/2009 11:33

Can't really help as I went to Cornwall! Was the best thing we could have done though. No travel hassle, self catering so totally private and no false expectations about weather or locals. Just a totally relaxing time with my DH - have very fond memories and would do the same again (although hopefully will be no need).

We considered the Faroe Islands, a tour of Scandinavia, the ice hotel and cabins in Finland and various other cold places too - probably even less help!

London! Got married on our last day of holiday in Oz.

Seeline · 29/04/2009 11:36

Like Fizzpops, probably not much help, but we toured round Iceland. It was fantastic and I would love to go back again sometime, but if your DB was looking at Hawaii, it may be a bit on the chilly side

notsoteenagemum · 29/04/2009 11:36

New York, ten days, child free, paid for by our generous wedding guests.
We went in Feb so it was freezing but we don't like hot, beachy hols so perfect for us.
Best holiday ever, and guiltily I didn't miss dc that much.

Smalline · 29/04/2009 11:36

I went to Mexico, but that's no good is it.

My Sister-in-Law however, went on a 5 star all inclusive to Cyprus, she is still singing it's praises and that was 11 years ago.

ChasingSquirrels · 29/04/2009 11:36

3 days in Singapore then 2 weeks in Lombok.
We were expats at the time so came back to the UK to get married and had honeymoon on the way back to where we were living. So flights covered by employer

YanknCock · 29/04/2009 11:37

We went to Las Vegas because I remembered it as being a place you could have fun on the cheap. We needed somewhere in the U.S. in January too, since we were also going to see my family/friends for a reception.

Unfortunately, it was not as cheap as I remembered, and I'd forgotten how ridiculously smokey all the casinos were. Was newly pregnant and feeling nauseous and exhausted all the time, so it really wasn't the place to be!

We went to Matlock and took DS (5 months)!!! Was lovely! Stayed in a fab hotel and just chilled and explored for a couple of days!

Tommy · 29/04/2009 11:42

we did a few days in Granada in Spain and a few days on the coast at Nirja. We wnated to go further afield but I am a teacher and only had a week off for half term!

It was lovely - would tick all the boxes I think especially if you stayed at the nice hotle in Nirja

PestoSunshineMonster · 29/04/2009 11:50

Beach holiday in Kenya with a mini-safari thrown in.

slug · 29/04/2009 11:52

West country, but I was 7 months pg and not allowed to fly.

Can I suggest Croatia? Split is centred around an old Roman palace and is ideal for island hopping. From Pula you can take a day trip to Venice.

Hungary. Budapest is fab and there is Lake Ballaton nearby.

Songbird · 29/04/2009 11:54

Hired a 1970s VW camper and drove round Derbyshire and Yorkshire.

Great fun, romantic-ish, and loads of things to see and do.

sunnyshine · 29/04/2009 11:57

We went to scotland - self catering cottage, lots of very late cooked breakfasts, meals out and afternoons in bed I really don't see the point of the expensive honeymoon abroad. It's a time to be enjoying discovering yourselves as a married couple - all you need is a bed and some access to food. A nice view or place to go occasionally is a bonus but not the point of a honeymoon! You've got the rest of your life to go on holiday - the priority on honeymoon should be each other - not seeing the Sphinx or topping up a tan.

Also if you stay UK based you can be smug about your carbon footprint and go back there every year for your anniversary!

porcupine11 · 29/04/2009 12:12

We went to Corsica for honeymoon, it was amazing, exceeded all our expectations. The beaches are Caribbean-esque and some of the inland landscapes reminded me of Canada, very dramatic. It's also not developed (esp in the south) so v romantic - we had a villa with its own little beach! Need a hire car to get around.

PolkaDotRachel · 29/04/2009 13:30

Seychells for 10 days - amazing - but also ticks the v v v expensive box!

We did look into cheaper options but at the end of the day you (hopefully!) only go on one "honeymoon" so make the most of it!

Some people HATE this idea but you can always ask for wedding guests to contribute to your honeymoon instead of buying regular gifts (note I did not do this).

I would have thought in the current economic climate he could negotiate some quite good deals?

We recently booked a holiday with Kuoni and were able to get 20% off with a bit of haggling

AnnieShamrockInYourEar · 29/04/2009 13:35

Bali, and Hong Kong on the way back.

esselle · 29/04/2009 13:44

We got married in Australia - where I am from and had our honeymoon here in Langkawi Malaysia on our way back to London. It was lovely!!

JulesJules · 29/04/2009 13:51

A few days in Paris at a v posh hotel. Was bliss

Joolyjoolyjoo · 29/04/2009 13:55

We went to Rome- really enjoyed it, and will always remember it (but then, I guess you will remember your honeymoon wherever you go!!) Only downside was hotel- not great, and also very "doing" holiday rather than relaxing by the sea type thingy- loved it, but felt quite busy, after all the wedding stress, so not the most relaxing

Sycamoretree · 29/04/2009 13:58

We toured NZ. It was great but I was very early pg and puked my way round lol!

MaryBS · 29/04/2009 14:01

Did a tour of the Canadian Rockies. Absolutely fantastic. Only wished we'd done the extra week and toured the glaciers as well.
