Posting on behalf of DB who was originally going to Hawaii which ticked most boxes: -romantic, beautiful, exotic, but with a city so there's stuff to do.
Sadly it also ticks the Rather Expensive box so he's exploring other options, so I'd love to know what y'all got up to, MNers
TIA

Langkawi - stayed at two different places on the island then a few days in KL. I love Malaysia.

ChasingSqurrels
Where in Lombok?
It's my favourite place in the world that I've been to. I've been 4 times, the last time for 8 weeks and I love it.
I've mainly stayed in Senggigi with trips back and forth to the Gillis and spent some time in Kuta (Lombok as opposed to Bali)although I've been there plenty too.

Not on Honeymoon though I might add, I'm not married although the 8 weeks trip I had DD with me. She was a year old and they were so great with her.

Marrakech, it was fab

TheApprentice · 29/04/2009 14:14

rubyruby we went to the IceHotel! We had a week in Sweden, spent some time in Stockholm and the rest up in the Arctic Circle in the Ice hotel. It was a pretty amazing experience (We got married in February so it was either go somewhere cold, or else travel a long way and we only had a week so longhaul didnt seem a good option). however, it was not cheap, so not really a budget option.

SarahL2 · 29/04/2009 14:22

Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia with a 3 day stop over in Kuala Lumpur on the way back.

It was amazing. Very exotic, staff in hotel spoilt us rotten, rode elephants, saw Orangutans, walked the skybridge in the Petronas Towers. It wasn't off the scale expensive either.

You do need a few jabs and malaria tablets which is why we decided to honeymoon there - not the kind of place you can take small children...

Bettymum · 29/04/2009 14:22

First day of our honeymoon was spent at PILs .
Then we had a day fly fishing in Carlisle (DH bought me waders as a wedding present ), three days in the Lake District, a couple of days in Perthshire (more fishing) and three days in Edinburgh (nice dinners and lots of wine). It was lovely.

crumpet · 29/04/2009 14:30

Scotland - stayed in some amazing hotels in beautiful places (but spent as much as a swanky tropical holiday...)

JeMeSouviens · 29/04/2009 14:31

First was Fiji, but I imagine with longhaul that will be pricey.

Second was ski week in Whistler. I can highly recommend that area of Canada.

What type of things does your DB like to do? Or is he looking for a beach holiday specfically?

How about an all inclusive to the Caribbean somewhere? St Lucia, St Martins and Barbados are all lovely, with Barbados being the friendliest of the lot, even though we were robbed there

Lizzylou · 29/04/2009 14:31

Oh, Sarah, I am saving up for our Family holiday to Borneo, so we can see Orangutans, perhaps in about 5 yrs time (boys will be 10 and 8 then).

mistlethrush · 29/04/2009 14:33

Sussex - had a mini stately home all to ourselves (self catering) on the edge of a village - nice pub within staggering distance

neolara · 29/04/2009 14:33

Namibia. We booked the first night's accommodation and a four wheel drive, then we just headed off into the desert. Not cheap, but extraordinarily beautiful. Saw more zebras than people.

squeaver · 29/04/2009 14:36

One week in Hawaii (Maui)

Two weeks in California/Nevada: Palm Springs, Vegas, Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Death Valley, San Francisco.

Rebeccaj · 29/04/2009 14:39

Three weeks in South Africa - had a fabulous time, and only a small time difference so no jetlag!

newlark · 29/04/2009 14:44

US National Parks in a hire car. Started in San Francisco finished in Las Vegas via Yosemite, Death Valley, Arches NP, Bryce Canyon, Monument Valley, Grand Canyon. Was in August but everywhere is airconditioned. We both like walking/outdoors. We stayed in good hotels at the start/end and motels in between.

SarahL2 · 29/04/2009 14:45

Lizzylou 8 and 10 should be old enough for Malaria tablets I should think. They can make you feel a little sick though. Not sure about the other jabs. You'll need Tetenus, Tyhoid, Polio, and Hep A I think.

My advice is stay in the hotel though, unless it's on an organised trip, as things can be very basic outside of the resort and I'm not sure I would trust the food on tiny tummies. We did this and still got to see loads. We did trips to the local market (so wish I'd tried Durian fruit) and to the mountain, saw orchids growing in the wild, rode elephants, painted silk....

We stayed at the Shangrli La Tanjung Aru which was beautiful. They did free bus rides to thier sister hotel, the Rasa Ria, on the island which had it's own Orangutan sanctuary within the grounds. If you're going to see Orangutans, then that might be the place for you, you wouldn't even have to leave the hotel!!

Photo's are here

Lizzylou · 29/04/2009 16:00

OOh, Sarah , but also for 5 years time!
It looks fab.

hifi · 29/04/2009 16:14

here in langkawi, dh was scared of all the creatures though

TigersChick · 29/04/2009 16:18

We went on a cruise in Alaska.
Not quite lying on the beach stuff but it was absolutely fantastic. We've already decided we're going back for our Silver Anniversary

TigersChick · 29/04/2009 16:29

Just read thru thread and can also recommend Langkawi and the Tanjung Aru - tho it's quite a lot of years since I was in either ...

What about Mexico?
Cozumel and Playa Del Carmen are very nice and not as built-up as Cancun.
Or, further down the coast is Belize which is beautiful and nowhere near as well established so can be a lot cheaper - tho it can also be a bit of a fiddle to get to.

nocluemum · 29/04/2009 16:44

We decided to go to Italy and stay in amazing hotels that we would never justify spending that sort of money in the future rather than going further afield and spending the same amount on more normal honeymoon hotels - if that makes sense.

MadameCastafiore · 29/04/2009 16:50

Hotel Santa Caterina, Amalfi, Italy here first time.

Not been one one yet with MrCastafiore

crumpet · 29/04/2009 16:52

Think Mexico might not be on the agenda at the moment

poshtottie · 29/04/2009 17:21

PlumpRumpSoggyBaps · 29/04/2009 17:41

We did....

Las Vegas for 3 nights.
Maui for 6 nights.
Burlington for 2 nights.

All wonderful, although we were 'too early' for the fall leaves in Burlington. Las Vegas was a blast- first time ever in a casino- and Maui was just beautiful.

DH has promised me another trip to Maui for our 10th wedding anniversary. Only another 6 years to go......

Ruthiebabes · 29/04/2009 17:43

Sorrento on the Amalfi coast in Italy... I love Italy.. v romantic. We also had a couple to days in Rome.
