Caribbean? Worth visiting or boring and tacky?

Planning a trip with family or either February half term or Easter holidays and really want to go somewhere properly hot and exotic and relax, swim, see wildlife etc. I'm a very nervous flier but accept I'm going to need to travel at least 8/9 hours for proper heat. My shortlist is currently Barbados or St Lucia but not sure if there's that much to do. Other options would be Mexico or Thailand (DH ie less keen and both require a longer flight which isn't ideal).

If you're looking at entire countries and regions then they're likely to have many places that are worth visiting and some that are 'boring and tacky', which is obviously subjective.

That applies wherever you go as pretty much anywhere you could go on holiday will have authentic local places, worthy cultural sites, watersports and other activities and a range of accommodation and catering options such as small guest houses, boutique hotels or cheap and cheerful all inclusive cocktails and chips.

Moonfrothy · 14/10/2026 06:02

I've been to all those places bar St Lucia, and boring and tacky is not how I would describe any of them. All were great holidays in their own ways and I've been back more than once to all of them!

TadpolesInPool · 14/10/2026 06:09

I've lived in the Caribbean and boring and tacky are never words that crossed my mind!

Hot = yes.
Exotic = it's absolutely beautiful and very different to European nature
Relax = it's very laid back
Swim = warm pools and warm sea
Wildlife = yes. Parrots, iguanas and lizards I saw on a daily basis. As well as mosquitoes and cockroaches and uncontrolled dogs and cats.

GarlicEverything · 14/10/2026 06:10

These are real countries, where real people live real lives. Not theme parks.

faithfultoGeorgeMichael · 14/10/2026 06:11

Yes the entire Caribbean with it's rich history and culture is "tacky". FFS 🙄

Totally agree with this.
It was quite jarring to see all the cruise boats unloading passengers for the day, who visit something and go to a beach for 1 day and then say they've "done" the island.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 14/10/2026 06:30

I’ve been to Jamaica, Barbados and Antigua. Know friends from all 3 countries. All are stunning in their own way. Dunns river falls! Wow.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 14/10/2026 06:32

I would say eg Bermuda (also been) which is where a friend of mine from USA honey mooned, that’s more British as a British overseas territory and some would say more interesting.

AtlasPine · 14/10/2026 06:34

What do you think of as ‘boring and tacky’? Is a beach holiday really right for you? They don’t get much nicer than the Caribbean if you choose carefully and make sure you go off the report and explore the locale. But I suspect your idea of boring and tacky isn’t the same as mine .

knitnerd90 · 14/10/2026 06:34

There are a few islands that are dull, but these are actual countries with history and culture, not just all inclusive beach resorts. Barbados has quite a lot. I have been there though it was years ago, and it's not a big resort sort of island, things are smaller and you get out and do more. Jamaica actually has the most, but I'm not sure what the current security situation is like (there's been times in the past where it has been an issue, which is a shame, because it's gorgeous and there's tons there)

TBH, I'd take the Caribbean islands over the Yucatán. Although they're near some really fantastic sites, both Cancún and the Riviera Maya have been developed poorly. As well as being a nightmare of resorts full of North Americans who are only there for sun, there's issues like sewage being dumped directly into the sea.

If you're interested in an eco type of holiday with lots of wildlife, Costa Rica is great. The beaches aren't as developed, you really go there to see the nature. Food is on the dull side compared to Mexico or the Caribbean, but it's the most peaceful and well developed country in Central America.

MrsNessaSmithy · 14/10/2026 06:36

There is Waitrose in Barbados

Having lived in Barbados I certainly wouldn’t describe it as boring or tacky. There’s plenty to see and do. Maybe stick to Benidorm OP 😮‍💨

HoraceCope · 14/10/2026 06:41

i was also going to suggest Costa Rica

Do people on cruises really think they’ve ‘done’ a destination? Having been on cruises myself I consider the day in port to be a taster of a destination. Never known anyone consider it to be more than that.

Askandyforcompo · 14/10/2026 06:54

I think you're going to have to define 'tacky'. I think of places like Benidorm as 'tacky' but an entire region of the world which includes several countries is unlikely to be.

Barbados is very beautiful and the areas I've been to have stunning beaches and fabulous food. It doesn't have a huge amount of 'activities' mainly because it's so hot. There are a few gardens and natural attractions to visit and lots of boat trips but it depends what you actually want to do. I read a review of a hotel the other day where the writer complained about a lack of entertainment round the pool during the day. If that's what you're looking for you possibly won't find it ( thankfully for me)

AStonedRose · 14/10/2026 06:59

Describing the entire culture of the Caribbean as 'tacky' is offensive AF.

Lordofmyflies · 14/10/2026 07:57

You're not going to see a huge range of land mammal wildlife on the Caribbean islands - marine life, yes, especially if you go to Bonaire but then its less developed than perhaps St Lucia and Barbados.
If you want a lovely beach, good food, relaxation then go to the Caribbean. You won't find theme parks, large zoos or activities. Its mainly water sports or viewing natural sights.
For wildlife you need Costa Rica, Thailand, Borneo really in that part of the world. If you like more developed country activities, malls, ski slopes, golf, water parks and theme parks perhaps look at Abu Dhabi? Great weather, beaches and a shorter flight (7hrs)

I don't, hence the question. I've never been but quite a few people I've spoken to who have been don't really rate them for whatever reason and seem to prefer other places. They have always been on my list as place(s) I want to visit to curious as to what the general consensus is.

Your post is quite offensive actually. I asked if it was tacky - a question not a judgement - can you tell the difference?

It would be more help telling us things you would like to do. Trips? Places to visit.

I have done Jamaica, DR and Mexico. None were tacky. In fact I have never found any of my holidays "tacky" even a cheap holiday to Portugal. The beaches were fantastic in Portugal.

sonjadog · 14/10/2026 10:40

Barbados is one of my favourite places on earth. The wildlife, history, culture, food etc. is amazing. Some of the other islands I found a bit too small for my liking (they are still very interesting but I don't like beach holidays so after a day or two I was ready to move on). I wouldn't describe any of them as "boring and tacky". I am not sure that any group of countries over a wide area can be written off as that. They aren't theme parks.

Thank you, this is really helpful. Where would you recommend staying in Barbados? Hotel or self catering? Really not keen on a big AI resort. Costa Rica is also a great idea so will check that out too. Noted on Mexico, plus travelled around there a fair bit when I was younger and would like to try somewhere new.
