Caribbean? Worth visiting or boring and tacky?

Planning a trip with family or either February half term or Easter holidays and really want to go somewhere properly hot and exotic and relax, swim, see wildlife etc. I'm a very nervous flier but accept I'm going to need to travel at least 8/9 hours for proper heat. My shortlist is currently Barbados or St Lucia but not sure if there's that much to do. Other options would be Mexico or Thailand (DH ie less keen and both require a longer flight which isn't ideal).

Barbados is one of my favourite places on earth. The wildlife, history, culture, food etc. is amazing. Some of the other islands I found a bit too small for my liking (they are still very interesting but I don't like beach holidays so after a day or two I was ready to move on). I wouldn't describe any of them as "boring and tacky". I am not sure that any group of countries over a wide area can be written off as that. They aren't theme parks.

Where did you stay?

I don’t think it has to be boring at all. Barbados and St Lucia seem quite different too, especially if you want to see wildlife and explore a bit rather than just sit by the pool. I’d probably look at what there is to do around the island before choosing, as that can make a big difference with children.

I’ve been to Jamaica, Barbados and Antigua. Know friends from all 3 countries. All are stunning in their own way. Dunns river falls! Wow.

Which island would you recommend of those three? Barbados and St Lucia are top of my list but Antigua also looks lovely.

Ridiculous question.

Is a whole country tacky ever? Let alone a whole region of nations....

Any island has its own character and natural scenery. They are all great for swimming, relaxing and beauty. Wildlife not so much unless you love to snorkel / dive / twitch.

I think you're going to have to define 'tacky'. I think of places like Benidorm as 'tacky' but an entire region of the world which includes several countries is unlikely to be.

Barbados is very beautiful and the areas I've been to have stunning beaches and fabulous food. It doesn't have a huge amount of 'activities' mainly because it's so hot. There are a few gardens and natural attractions to visit and lots of boat trips but it depends what you actually want to do. I read a review of a hotel the other day where the writer complained about a lack of entertainment round the pool during the day. If that's what you're looking for you possibly won't find it ( thankfully for me)

I meant lots of AI hotels, theme park like, over tourism etc. Cannot believe how many people have taken personal offence at the term "tacky." Don't reply if you're so offended.

"Is the whole of the large region that is the Caribbean which includes 13 countries and 12+ overseas territories as different as Bermuda, Haiti, Cuba, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, St Kitts & Nevis and Anguilla tacky?" Is a pretty silly idea and question, sorry.

I've been to the Domincian Republic, many years ago, which had severe issues with poverty and prostitution, but some of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen.

I've also been to St Maarten and Anguilla which was beautiful and the people were lovely and very friendly. Didn't do much apart from spend time on beautiful beaches and offshore islands, boat trips and snorkeling but that is a great holiday for me.

I'd love to go to more parts of the Caribbean.

What do you think of as ‘boring and tacky’? Is a beach holiday really right for you? They don’t get much nicer than the Caribbean if you choose carefully and make sure you go off the report and explore the locale. But I suspect your idea of boring and tacky isn’t the same as mine .

If you choose carefully and go off the beaten track .,..

Hence the purpose of this post

Never heard Barbados described as tacky. How odd. I don’t know who’s told you that but they’ve got the completely wrong end of the stick. It’s utterly amazing. Beautiful island with beautiful people. No tack in sight. If it’s tacky you’re after don’t bother.

Oh, thank you so much for my telling off. Silly me, asking a silly question. So glad the Mumsnet police are here to shut me up.

MNHQ - this post has been deemed unacceptable. Please take it down as it's a silly question and I am a silly woman for ever presuming to post it.

May I suggest that Mumsnet provides a list of approved questions (sanctioned by all you lovely posters) that we may ask so that we don't annoy or offend any of you delicate little loves in future.

I apologise again. Will never ask such a silly question again. What was I thinking?????????????????

Yes, we've established that I am stupid. Let's now forget the original purpose of this post and turn it into an attack on the poster shall we, for being just so so silly?

“Boring and tacky”? Blimey. Well, I suppose the UK is boring and tacky because there’s Blackpool sea front……

LostThestral · 14/10/2026 11:11

Not sure why OP is getting all the hate.

The islands are very different to each other but Barbados has a certain charm and has plenty to do other than just stay on the beach & personably I felt it was very safe there to go exploring.

Antigua we also love & is beautiful but found more of a relaxed vibe with a bit less to do.

Mexico is lovely but need to be a little more on your toes and they do have big problems with sargassum so it depends on how much you value a perfect beach.

You sound like a bit of a nightmare really. If you speak to people in real life like you have on here, especially staff in hotels, then that's how people will see you.

Tacky doesn't mean that to me so it would have been better to say what you meant in the first place.

Cuiriossir · 14/10/2026 11:18

Some resorts in the Caribbean are defo tacky (like Atlantis). Not boring- you just have to take it for what it is and get into it. Culture very different to European culture. I have been to the Caribbean a few times but wouldn't go back- only because there are so many other places to go and visit in the world. Loved Thailand, but it depends on where you go as to what vibe you want. Resorts are just that. I found Mexico a bit sterile but only went to Cancun. Given your choices, I would pick Thailand.

The UK is routinely called all sorts of unflattering names. Noone seems to mind that. Same for the US. There are multiple posts here also calling Dubai a number of unflattering names. It's completely ridiculous that you can't post what should be a fairly vanilla question without people take massive offence.

OP, we've just put the deposit down on a holiday to St Lucia ( 1 week) and Antigua ( the next week) for start of Feb 2027.

I can understand what you're talking about, as I love history and a bit of trekking....and I struggled trying to find a hotel that was not utterly obsessed with Spas and "Wellness", neither of which i was interested in.
However, there is a rich history and culture in all the Carribean, if you seek it out.
If you accept the (sometimes eye-wateringly expensive) resort-type places, you may be disappointed, but equally, you may not.
I would recommend paying for a zoom meeting with Trailfinders, where you can be v specific about what you want, and they will tailor-make you holiday, to your requirements.
It seems a lot for this, but if you're considering going this far, then I think it's worth investing in this to ensure your holiday is as good as it can be.

I also had to accept that this kind of holiday is considered to be relaxing, beautiful and luxurious. If I want anything else, I will go to Berlin, Dubrovnik, Rome...all of which I've been to and are beautiful ( but not necessarily relaxing).
You need to be sure about the type of holiday you are really after!

I've been to Barbados and Antigua, but not St Lucia. Have also been to Tobago.

My favourite is Barbados, and we've been many times. There are lots of accommodation options, and not all are AI. The South coast sounds like it probably wouldn't be up your street, as it's the most touristy - the place to go if you like buzzy, busy bars and restaurants and lots of night life. The East coast is the quietest, but the sea is very rough on that side of the island, so swimming generally not allowed. The West coast is known as the Platinum coast. That's where many of the top-end restaurants and hotels are.

I'd suggest you look at accommodation in Holetown. Lots to do there, but it's much quieter than the South coast. Accommodation ranges from the very top end - you're close to Sandy Lane - to more basic AirBnB places.

Antigua I quite liked, but we were only there for a week, so didn't get much of a feel for it.

Tobago was a different story altogether - much, much less developed. It's a beautiful island though. It might have changed now, but when we went (probably over 10 years ago now) the restaurant scene wasn't that great.

Thank you. That's very similar to what a few friends have said, i.e. it was ok but they wouldn't go back. I wondered why as it looks beautiful. As you say, there are so many other places that are equally beautiful but might be more interesting to certain people. We are mainly looking for peace and quiet and natural beauty not crowds of people, AI hotels, organised activities etc.

Quite amusing that pretty much everyone has pulled you up on asking whether the Caribbean (as a whole) is tacky, yet you’re still arguing with everyone, calling them morons, or Mumsnet police.

You could have just said that you’d worded it badly.

But you’re actually the one policing everyone now. No doubt snarky comeback will be waiting for me when I next log in.
