Bath- travelling alone

I'm driving to Cornwall over half term and want to stay overnight (1 or 2 nights) in Bath and explore. As a female travelling alone I want a hotel that's a safe walk from restaurants and nightlife and either with parking or a nearby long stay. During the day I'd like to sightsee and museum-visit. Not bothered about the baths. Would really like advice on what streets are the one's with evening entertainment/good restaurants, good quality hotels and things I should definitely try to see/do while there. Thank you!

We've just come back from Bath (there's a recent thread on MN I started asking for restaurant recommendations which I found very useful).
We stayed at the Bird which I couldn't fault. The breakfasts were amazing and we had a lovely dinner in the Grill one night. Worth noting that the Grill is closed on Monday and Tuesday.
It has parking at £20 a day which was one reason I chose it.
It took 10-15 minutes to walk into the centre - a very pleasant walk and felt very safe.
We ate at Pintxo (delicious tapas), the Circus (bit of an uphill walk but maybe seemed worse as DH is just getting over gout; had their pre-theatre menu, gorgeous) and the Bird Grill.
Sotto Sotto also looked very good but again was closed on Monday.
Not sure about actual entertainment (although we did go to the theatre on Tuesday) but there are some cocktail bars mentioned on my thread.
I'm sure you'll have a great time - we're already planning to return.

Eta Hopefully this link to my thread will work: https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/_chat/5584254-restaurants-in-bath-not-gordon-jones-sadly?utm_campaign=thread&utm_medium=share

We have just stayed in an amazing tiny house on Kipling avenue in bath which I booked through airb&b. The host Suzanna was super welcoming. Walkable down the hill into town about twenty mins and we just got an Uber back. Mayor of Bath free guided city tours were fab and we ate at the real Italian pizza co which was great.

I live in Bath and would stay at the Apex or the McDonald ( nice pools area) or if budget is lower the Hampton by Hilton or the Doubletree - all are convenient for city centre - bars and restaurants are kind of scattered around but masses of choice at all levels, so depends what you consider an ok budget -happy to recommend , but don’t want to presume -

I go to bath a lot -my top hits would be the Root restaurant, veg led but just delicious food lovely cocktails nice terrace for views of bath. If you just won't go past, Solina pasta in the same little development of the main street is lovely

The Beckford canteen is nice and the Walcot is terrific too. Landrace Balery for pastries. There's a restaurant above it, but I haven't been there, son rates.

gravitarse · 10/10/2026 07:22

Hotels - I'd go to indigo in the centre.

Edited

Root is excellent - top notch food, veggie lead but not 100% veggie ( I’m not veggie but like the veggie stuff they do) - the ones you mention are all good -

I second the Indigo. Stayed there with my 80 year old mother and walked everywhere from there. No hotel parking but you can park in the underground car park under the shopping area.

gravitarse · 10/10/2026 15:41

Root is a bit like Bubala in London And if you haven't been there @Crikeyalmighty then o. M. G.

Yeah, the Indigo is in a little pedestrian street a short walk from the station, between the station and the rugby ground.
really Central

havent been to Bubala! A friend took me to Root at lunch - absolutely top flavours - loved it - the set lunch was immense -

The park and ride at the racecourse is good as you can leave your car overnight and the bus drops you right in the city centre. Cheaper than parking in the city.

WantAnOrange · 10/10/2026 18:35

The Waterside Travelodge is very pleasant. It overlooks a river and you can see the swans. We walk from the train station and it's all very central to the shops etc. The staff are nice.

ExcitingRicotta · 10/10/2026 18:41

Haringtons is right in the middle of town, is really good value and in an old Georgian townhouse. Very friendly and I think they include breakfast if you book with them directly.
Parking not included but there are car parks you can use. Inigo is also fine as others have said but Haringtons location is delightful and better value in my opinion.

Yeah, I've been to that Travelodge. It's good and it has Parking but when I went, it was a bit dated, maybe they've done it up since then.

gravitarse · 10/10/2026 20:11

Basically driving and Parking in Bath is a disaster

ThreeWheelsGood · 10/10/2026 20:17

Bath is a very safe city. You will be fine walking solo. Your priority actually should be to find somewhere in your budget as central as possible not up any steep hills (Bath city centre is in a valley).

I’m wondering if she meant the Apex?? ( hotel)

viques · 11/10/2026 00:29

So long since I have been to Bath, this thread is making me feel very nostalgic. I remember we went on a river trip and I saw a kingfisher for the first time, I was so excited.

And the gorgeous quilts in the American Museum, they had a piece quilting stand set up for people to have a go. The attendant said I was a natural, though I think this was to encourage me to buy a kit to take home, which of course I did, I wonder what I did with it!

StayCoolLikeAPenguin · 11/10/2026 00:41

It's been 10 years since I went but if it's similar to how it was then I would highly recommend the American Museum. I thought it was really interesting!

Neverthoughtiwould · 11/10/2026 07:42

Yes, I was at the American Museum last week and it’s well worth a visit though avoid the cafe!
