Would you pay £500 each to upgrade on an eight-hour flight?

We're coming back from the US soon, around an 8 hour flight. It's a day flight that lands about 10pm US time in the UK.

An upgrade to business class from economy is around £500 each. Would you bother? We're not rich, earning about £10k a month.

Good point. When I paid circa £500 each way, it was premium economy to business. It’s quite the bargain if it’s from economy straight to business.

Absolutely, if the £1k is pure disposable income and there is nothing you’d prefer to spend it on.

I would. The difference between economy and business is usually thousands.

Whats the trip? Wekend city break? A three week tour for your silver wedding anniversary? Honeymoon? Just a regular holiday? And how does the price comoare to the rest of the trip?

It depends how tall you are in my opinion.

If the flight is shorter and you land a few hours earlier, go for it!

We've ever only flown back overnight and we chose business (but we visit less regularly to allow the budget).

For us it’s worth it o arrive rested and ready to go.

Er...if she's talking net monthly income which is likely (who talks about monthly income as gross?)...then that's two salaries of £85k. More if there are pension/student loan contributions.

Are you back at work, needing to make decisions in a responsible job the next day, or have you got time to recover once you're back in the UK? Personally, I'd pay for the upgrade to business, but being a daytime flight, I'd probably spend most of it working so the money would be well spent. If I came back with nothing going on for a few days so I could recover, then I'd put it towards that trip or another one.

will depend on the airline, route and aircraft. For a flatbed on a redeye with BA that price is a bargain. Probably Not worth it for a daytime flight or not flat seating, though if you have connecting flights and lounge access that changes the calculation again.
