City break end of October - Budapest, Krakow, Avignon, Guernsey elsewhere?

A friend from abroad is visiting UK as part of a longer trip to Spain and Portugal towards the end of October. She's going to Scotland afterwards, but has about 5 days in between, and has suggested we go somewhere. I think she was assuming somewhere in the UK, by train, but she wants to go somewhere new for me (and for her, she knows the UK moderately well), and most of the places I can think of are either more like day/overnight trips, not easy without a car, not great weather then, or just generally likely to be quite expensive with UK train/hotel/food prices. So I was thinking maybe of a city break somewhere that might be cheaper, as long as it doesn't involve a lot more travelling for her - so somewhere fairly near an airport/easy public transport once we get there.

She's already done Copenhagen, lots of Croatia, lots of Italy, lots of Switzerland, Dublin, and some other cities, I'm not totally sure where. I've done some places in Italy, Paris, Prague, Athens, Helsinki, Stockholm, Belfast and a few others. Spain and Portugal would be lovely but she'll have just been there.

So my short list at the moment are places like Budapest, Berlin, Krakow, Avignon, or maybe the Channel Islands, but I'm open to other suggestions.

(Or indeed cities in England that might be worth looking at - I have been to quite a bit, so it's less exciting for me).
Where would you choose? I"m more into history/museums than I think she is, but she'd like some of it, and she'd enjoy architecture too, and nice scenery. She'd enjoy things like a cookery class, walking, local culture. Somewhere that would be easy to get to from Stansted would be best, but we could get to other London airports - most likely looking at budget airlines. Ideally somewhere that transport is easy/quick on the other end. Any hotel recommendations that anyone has would be welcome too, and/or package deals that you have done that have worked. I"m aware that it's half term week and that will make things more expensive/less available though.

I'm thinking maybe 3 nights away, depending on cost, could maybe just do 2. I"m not sure it's really long enough for Berlin! We don't need fancy hotels, just nice location, reasonable quality, twin room, maybe breakfast.

Thanks for any ideas or specific recommendations, links, hotels etc., and/or itineraries! I think most of the planning will fall to me, which I find quite stressful, having to make decisions on behalf of someone else (and their money). Do you think I"d be able to get flights/hotel for less than £300 each? That might be too tight, I don't really know.

How about Nice, Cologne or Munich? I think they’re a bit more doable with only 3 nights.

MinnieMountain · 24/08/2026 15:48

I loved Avignon. I stayed in a 1 bedroom flat, but I'd recommend Acte2 restaurant. You can get the bus to the Pont du Gard.

Or Nimes. That was fun with a friend. I can't link to the Airbnb we stayed in on the app, but PM me if you're interested.

I’ve been to Munich, but will look up Nice and Cologne

the photos of Avignon look lovely but I don’t know how easy get there/around is

i have never used Air B&B before, so am a bit nervous of trying it abroad for the first time, kind of like the security of a hotel that I can look up about in advance etc… I know I should try air B&B some day though as it would be cheaper

thanks for the thoughts so far!

I've only been by train to Avignon and Cologne. Cologne is really easy by train-Eurostar to Brussels, a quick connection, then 1hr 50 on a direct train.

Avignon looks like a faff to fly to. Once you're there it's all walkable. It's a compact city.

I’ve been to Berlin, Budapest & Krakow in the last year or so. All great. Krakow absolutely tourist dominated. Budapest similarly overrun, but loved the baths (though go early). Berlin is absolutely my favourite, been a couple of times and now prefer it to Munich. So much to see and do. Would love another week there.

Did Belfast and it was brilliant. The Giant’s causeway/ Game of thrones all day coach trip was really good and the Titanic experience is incredible. We also enjoyed the hop on hop off guided bus tour.

savvy7 · 24/08/2026 18:09

Florence would be my vote

savvy7 · 24/08/2026 18:10

Actually scrap that as it's an hour train ride from Pisa and warrants more time. Krakow might be better?

WhereAreWeNow · 24/08/2026 18:11

Avignon is lovely and would still be warm in the autumn. Your friend could get there by train from Spain.

NotSoLittle · 24/08/2026 18:11

Amsterdam or Luxembourg City?

Elpheba · 24/08/2026 18:13

Wroclaw in Poland! BEAUTIFUL- probably less touristy than Krakow. Bridges, rivers, beautiful architecture, good museums, transport infrastructure sound and cheap! We went last October and also had brilliant weather

LikeGoldToAiryThinness · 24/08/2026 18:13

Florence, Amsterdam and Belfast I've already been to. I did really enjoy Belfast!

Sounds like Avignon might not be ideal for this trip then. Train would be good but i think Eurostar might cost a bomb in half term week. Will look up Cologne though.

Budapest might be full of tourists then but might mean some city break deals with budget airlines or something are available.

Channel islands anyone? I have a feeling they'd be very expensive to get to and stay in, specially in half term, but compact once we're there.

She's already booked from Spain to London as I think they're seeing somone briefly there, then her husband is off doing something for that week while she has time to visit

Wroclaw sounds interesting, I'd not really heard of it before. I'll see if it's a budget airline destination...

edit - yes seems like it's a ryanair one

How about Sicily, Malta or Vienna?

Although not sure where will be cheaper than the UK after you have added on flights, travel to airport, food, accommodation and excursions etc etc.

LikeGoldToAiryThinness · 24/08/2026 18:18

well we'd have food and accommodation and excursion costs here too, and I just hoped somewhere in europe would be cheaper, and possibly more of an opportunity for me to go somewhere that I wouldn't do on my own!

I've been to Vienna. but that reminds me that Salzburg is supposed to be nice and I've not been there. Not sure about end October though. Silicy could be interesting

We loved Tallin

MissyB1 · 24/08/2026 18:29

Friends of ours did Bucharest last Autumn and raved about it, I really want to go there.

DemonsandMosquitoes · 24/08/2026 18:44

Ljubljana and Lake Bled

damemaggiescurledupperlip · 24/08/2026 18:51

I have wanted to go to Avignon ever since I read ‘Madam, Will You Talk’ by Mary Stewart.

LikeGoldToAiryThinness · 24/08/2026 18:52

Bucharest is an interesting thought, will look that one up. Haven't really looked at more northerly places like Tallin but maybe worth checking.

Some Budapest holidays are coming up at £250pp for 3 nights, which sounds good but the hotels might not be fab for that price. It's the tui site, though the flights are ryanair

I’m going to krakow in October. I can’t believe how cheap it is!

LikeGoldToAiryThinness · 24/08/2026 19:32

yes I was thinking that as I was looking at some of the holiday packages - £200 each, which would probably cover one night in the UK plus a short train journey.

I wonder if it's too late to arrange excursions from Krakow though, as it would be quite busy over half term? Or are there generally fairly unlimited places, just more crowded? Thngs like Auschwitz tour, or the salt mines

I've just posted on another thread that GHENT is gorgeous. Very short flight, easy access from airport to Brussels Centraal train station and a short journey from there to Ghent. Lovely spot, plenty to see and do and you might even make it down the track to Bruges aswell. I prefer Ghent, it is much more authentic, as I thought Bruges was too manicured and a tourist trap.

mayflowers9 · 24/08/2026 19:38

Wroclaw and Krakow are both beautiful. I would also recommend Gdansk, on the Baltic Sea.

I’ve been wanting to visit Strasbourg and Colmar. You can get budget flights to Strasbourg.

I haven’t been to Krakow in October, but I don’t think it would be as busy as the summer or ski season.
