City break end of October - Budapest, Krakow, Avignon, Guernsey elsewhere?

A friend from abroad is visiting UK as part of a longer trip to Spain and Portugal towards the end of October. She's going to Scotland afterwards, but has about 5 days in between, and has suggested we go somewhere. I think she was assuming somewhere in the UK, by train, but she wants to go somewhere new for me (and for her, she knows the UK moderately well), and most of the places I can think of are either more like day/overnight trips, not easy without a car, not great weather then, or just generally likely to be quite expensive with UK train/hotel/food prices. So I was thinking maybe of a city break somewhere that might be cheaper, as long as it doesn't involve a lot more travelling for her - so somewhere fairly near an airport/easy public transport once we get there.

She's already done Copenhagen, lots of Croatia, lots of Italy, lots of Switzerland, Dublin, and some other cities, I'm not totally sure where. I've done some places in Italy, Paris, Prague, Athens, Helsinki, Stockholm, Belfast and a few others. Spain and Portugal would be lovely but she'll have just been there.

So my short list at the moment are places like Budapest, Berlin, Krakow, Avignon, or maybe the Channel Islands, but I'm open to other suggestions.

(Or indeed cities in England that might be worth looking at - I have been to quite a bit, so it's less exciting for me).
Where would you choose? I"m more into history/museums than I think she is, but she'd like some of it, and she'd enjoy architecture too, and nice scenery. She'd enjoy things like a cookery class, walking, local culture. Somewhere that would be easy to get to from Stansted would be best, but we could get to other London airports - most likely looking at budget airlines. Ideally somewhere that transport is easy/quick on the other end. Any hotel recommendations that anyone has would be welcome too, and/or package deals that you have done that have worked. I"m aware that it's half term week and that will make things more expensive/less available though.

I'm thinking maybe 3 nights away, depending on cost, could maybe just do 2. I"m not sure it's really long enough for Berlin! We don't need fancy hotels, just nice location, reasonable quality, twin room, maybe breakfast.

Thanks for any ideas or specific recommendations, links, hotels etc., and/or itineraries! I think most of the planning will fall to me, which I find quite stressful, having to make decisions on behalf of someone else (and their money). Do you think I"d be able to get flights/hotel for less than £300 each? That might be too tight, I don't really know.

Jersey is great! I really liked it. I found it to be quite sophisticated, very French feeling, plenty of lovely restaurants. I mainly associated it with my grandparents and bucket and spade holidays previously and it was nothing like that.
We drive to Belgium often to see friends as it's so quick and easy to get to from the euro tunnel. I second the recommendations for Ghent which is probably my favourite Belgian town. Brugge is gorgeous but very touristy. Brussels is also beautiful in the centre but busy and a bit edgy in parts.
I really want to go to the Scilly Islands but I'm a nervous flyer. It looks amazing.

Forgot to add that we did a quick four day trip to Malta last November which was fab, still very warm. I particularly loved Valetta and would definitely go back.

Budapest is gorgeous . Also Krakow, Prague, Vienna, Cologne?

DSs went somewhere in Romania before they went to Bucharest which was nice. Brasow. They liked it. Wizz Air fly there.

Budapest is much nicer than Bucharest really.

You say England but what about Glasgow / Edinburgh?

Munich.

I've been to both Jersey and Guernsey, obviously being bigger there is more to do on Jersey but Guernsey has a bit of a 'going back in time' feel to it which I liked. Salzburg was mentioned upthread which I loved, I'm a big 'Sound of Music' fan and there is a tour that takes you to all the places that feature in the film - its hands down the best thing I have ever done!

Aix en Provence is lovely, and close to Avignon. We flew to Marseille and got a direct coach outside the airport to Aix. It's a really nice place and all walkable.

If you can get flights to Carcassonne that's also a great place to go for a few days. Weather in both places should be great.

Not Glasgow/Edinburgh as she's heading off to Scotland later. But I'd like to see Glasgow one day!

Aix is another good thought. I'll look up Salzburg too, have been to Vienna but not Salzburg. Wonder what the weather might be like then though, sadly too early for Christmas markets!

We loved Tallin

Gets my vote. Largely intact medieval old town, just beautiful

Pieceofpurplesky · 27/08/2026 21:15

In the UK have you been to Chester, Northumberland, Pembrokeshire, Peak District? All beautiful areas

LikeGoldToAiryThinness · 27/08/2026 21:55

I’ve been to Chester but not the others. I was thinking they’d not be so easy without a car though

Not sure if you are open to UK. But could get the train to York. Amazing history and small compact city.

EmmaStone · 28/08/2026 11:35

In the UK, I'd suggest Bath (history, beauty, shopping & spa)/Bristol (cool, v foodie) & York. Durham's lovely but not that much to do for 3 days, I guess you could combine with Newcastle, but a bit grim if the weather's not great.

I don't think anyone's recommended Bordeaux yet? Great city, and an easy trip to St Emilion for delicious wine tasting if you fancy it. Also getting around Benelux is super easy, could either get the train or fly into Amsterdam or Brussels, then trains and bikes around Delft, Utrecht, Leiden, The Hague, Ghent, Bruges etc etc?

I suspect the issue is too much choice!

Wroclaw in Poland! BEAUTIFUL- probably less touristy than Krakow. Bridges, rivers, beautiful architecture, good museums, transport infrastructure sound and cheap! We went last October and also had brilliant weather

Yesssss...love Wroclaw. Depeding on how many nights you could fly into Krakow, train to Wroclaw, and fly back from there?

ETA but Tallinn would also be great if you haven't been!

I agree with Bath for a UK break, lots of history, but also good shopping and good food and drink.
