City break end of October - Budapest, Krakow, Avignon, Guernsey elsewhere?

A friend from abroad is visiting UK as part of a longer trip to Spain and Portugal towards the end of October. She's going to Scotland afterwards, but has about 5 days in between, and has suggested we go somewhere. I think she was assuming somewhere in the UK, by train, but she wants to go somewhere new for me (and for her, she knows the UK moderately well), and most of the places I can think of are either more like day/overnight trips, not easy without a car, not great weather then, or just generally likely to be quite expensive with UK train/hotel/food prices. So I was thinking maybe of a city break somewhere that might be cheaper, as long as it doesn't involve a lot more travelling for her - so somewhere fairly near an airport/easy public transport once we get there.

She's already done Copenhagen, lots of Croatia, lots of Italy, lots of Switzerland, Dublin, and some other cities, I'm not totally sure where. I've done some places in Italy, Paris, Prague, Athens, Helsinki, Stockholm, Belfast and a few others. Spain and Portugal would be lovely but she'll have just been there.

So my short list at the moment are places like Budapest, Berlin, Krakow, Avignon, or maybe the Channel Islands, but I'm open to other suggestions.

(Or indeed cities in England that might be worth looking at - I have been to quite a bit, so it's less exciting for me).
Where would you choose? I"m more into history/museums than I think she is, but she'd like some of it, and she'd enjoy architecture too, and nice scenery. She'd enjoy things like a cookery class, walking, local culture. Somewhere that would be easy to get to from Stansted would be best, but we could get to other London airports - most likely looking at budget airlines. Ideally somewhere that transport is easy/quick on the other end. Any hotel recommendations that anyone has would be welcome too, and/or package deals that you have done that have worked. I"m aware that it's half term week and that will make things more expensive/less available though.

I'm thinking maybe 3 nights away, depending on cost, could maybe just do 2. I"m not sure it's really long enough for Berlin! We don't need fancy hotels, just nice location, reasonable quality, twin room, maybe breakfast.

Thanks for any ideas or specific recommendations, links, hotels etc., and/or itineraries! I think most of the planning will fall to me, which I find quite stressful, having to make decisions on behalf of someone else (and their money). Do you think I"d be able to get flights/hotel for less than £300 each? That might be too tight, I don't really know.

I came here to recomnend Gdansk too but see someone beat me to it. I have been to Poland a lot and Gdansk is my favourite place. Wroclaw is also nice.

Avignon is great and easy on the train from Marseille. I loved Marseille as well but some people don't. Went to both in hot weather though. Could do both on same trip.

Thecows · 24/08/2026 19:49

Budapest is glorious

hahabahbag · 24/08/2026 19:53

Train to Avignon and it’s small so getting around is easy, stay within the walls ideally. Take a trip to chateauneuf if you can, go wine tasting

hahabahbag · 24/08/2026 19:56

Tallin is lovely but not cheap, prices aren’t far off the uk and it’s so busy (and much moaning that it’s more expensive than Germany by German people visiting when we recently were there)

A thought if someone is travelling a lot they may not want to be queuing at airports, they may just want to hang out with you. What uk cities haven’t you been to?

Pippatpip · 24/08/2026 20:06

Guernsey is great and really easy to get round by bus. Lots of hotels available. A day trip or even an overnight to Sark is a must. Victor Hugo’s house is a true hit of maximalism. Lots of walking, lovely beaches. I’ve not been to Jersey but it is bigger and perhaps more to do?

BaronessBomburst · 24/08/2026 20:09

Bonn is nice - there are lots of museums, including Beethoven's birthplace and a surprisingly interesting mathematics museum, and it's not so far from Cochem if you wanted to go into the Moselle valley.
It's also cheap as it's not so touristy.

BaronessBomburst · 24/08/2026 20:12

And I agree about Avignon. We loved it.

Thanks, I will keep looking these up!
UK cities that I haven't been to for enough time to see much that are reasonably large (well, thinking England/Wales really as she's going to Scotland later, and I've been to Belfast and area) - Newcastle, Manchester, Leeds. I've been to Liverpool, Exeter, lots of small cities and towns. Yes I think she was thinking of not a lot of travel, but she assumes that train travel in the UK is easy, fast and cheap and that it goes everywhere, which is not necessarily the case! And it might be cheaper to go elsewhere. But I'm not averse to UK trips either if I can find the right one, for that time of year. I'd like to see Glasgow but think she'll be doing that another time.

Bonn sounds interesting as I like both maths and music.

Maybe combining Jersey and Guernsey, not sure how expensive/easy it is to get from one to another. Or maybe there's lots to do on just one, especally with a trip to Sark. I remember reading the Potato Peel Pie book and thinking Guernsey's history was interesting.

Where are you starting your journey from?

LikeGoldToAiryThinness · 24/08/2026 22:18

London area - for planes preferably Stansted or Heathrow, though could do Gatwick if it's not too early. Or Eurostar. Trains could get to any London mainline station.

I only booked my excursions a couple of weeks ago. There was loads of availability.

yes I was thinking that as I was looking at some of the holiday packages - £200 each, which would probably cover one night in the UK plus a short train journey.

I wonder if it's too late to arrange excursions from Krakow though, as it would be quite busy over half term? Or are there generally fairly unlimited places, just more crowded? Thngs like Auschwitz tour, or the salt mines

Salt mines probably ok. Auschwitz opens for booking 90 days head for direct bookings. It’s very easy to get to by train. There are a number of operators that do tours though and some are more reputable than others. (There were issues before about tour operators not getting tickets and then cancelling but I think that’s not resolved)

there is a krakow fb page full of info - I went in March.

I really liked the Schindler museum as well.

HelloDaisy · 25/08/2026 05:29

Avignon, Ghent, Seville or Lake Annecy would be be my choices.

rivalsbinge · 25/08/2026 05:29

Where are you in the UK OP? Just thinking of suggesting places you could travel in the UK save her flying in and straight back out?

iI did think Dublin for flights and not too much travel.

menopausequeen · 25/08/2026 06:08

Amsterdam is really quick journey by plane and has lots of activities. Budapest is great, lots to see and do and has some nice spa baths all year round.

unsync · 25/08/2026 06:12

What about Venice? Ryanair fly there out of Stansted.

MyUmberOrca · 25/08/2026 09:29

You need to book the salt mines in advance but not massively so especially if there are only 2 of you are you are flexible. They've got a good website. Book direct with them. It's easy to get to, we got an Uber but you can get the train too.

I think Auschwitz does need to be booked further in advance.

LikeGoldToAiryThinness · 25/08/2026 09:45

Thanks for the idea and info. I'll talk to her and see what she is up for.

It's London area we'd be starting from, so could also do UK ideas but I have been to quite a few of the smaller places, and day trips seem to cost a lot, but maybe somewhere larger like Newcastle could be worth a trip - not sure end October is ideal weather though!

Good to know it's not too late for Krakow excursions if we go there.

Tirana, Albania? Reasonably priced, unusual city, history is fascinating. We did a free walking tour, and our guide was very knowledgable and talked to us about his grandparents experience of coming out of the communist regime. Not too touristy yet, but plenty to do, and some lovely day trips out of the city too.

LikeGoldToAiryThinness · 25/08/2026 10:37

interesting - Albania is not somewhere I have ever thought about!

Mycatmax · 25/08/2026 10:57

Carcassonne? Direct flights from Stansted I think?

Lisanne55 · 25/08/2026 11:02

Lille or Brussels - easy by Eurostar. You could also change at Brussels & go on to Bruges, Ghent or Cologne.

In the UK - Edinburgh, Cardiff, York, Birmingham??

Iusedtofly · 25/08/2026 19:58

Apologies if someone else has already suggested this but I went to Naples at that time of year. It was fabulous! Stayed in an Airbnb in a lovely residential area. Weather was mild and dry. Travelled around on Metro and train. Very easy to use btw. It was affordable and interesting. We went to Pompeii, Sorrento and Vesuvius. We also explored the city and ate well. The home of pizza so teen daughter was in heaven. Don’t expect everyone to speak English in the city but that’s all part of the fun. I’d go back in a heartbeat.

Noodlesfordinner · 25/08/2026 20:04

I highly recommend Ljubljana if you do go away, underrated city with a typical European feel and nice scenery within travel distance
