I'm curious, how much did your summer holiday cost this year?

How much are people paying to go on holiday this year?

Our stats:
2 adults 2 children
1 week in July to Lanzarote
Basic 2 star self catering apts, small pool, all clean and pleasant. No luxury.
£1800
Spending money approx £1500

We eat out for lunch and dinner each day, visit a music bar/play pool after dinner and do a few local day trips but kids happy with pool/beach/playparks. They could run up and down a wall beside stairs for hours!

I pass by some of the bigger hotels with the entertainment and activities and wonder if we would like that. Would anyone share how much they are paying for these types of holidays?

Just wondering how much people are paying for different holidays and also, as an aside, when is the best time to book for best deals?

cruise around the med- me and dd £4k for one week including flights, trips, food, cabins with balcony.

No holiday this year but following to gather inspiration for future trips (and to motivate me to save for them!)

Interesting to see what people spend, I’ve been guilty of not properly budgeting in the past (esp for entertainment, food etc) and have often ended up spending what feels like a lot, but this thread makes me realise it’s relatively normal to spend loads, at least for some mumsnetters.

But none of that sounds any different to our £5k AI experienced. What is costing the extra £5k?

Although to be fair we are in Scotland and probably get better value for our money as our school holidays are much earlier.

Can I ask where you stay getting this for £5k as it sounds great?

Those are all amazing deals!!

I do spend quite a bit of time pricing things up, comparing different websites, and tweaking the dates to see if I can get a better deal.

That's why our holidays are often a random number of days rather than the standard 7 or 14. I usually book the flights first and choose the cheapest days to fly out and back and then search for a hotel.

Everything is booked separate.

august Greece £2500 plus £1500 spends. 2 adults 1 child

littlemousebigcheese · 24/07/2026 10:21

We’re doing little holidays - week in a caravan park, week camping, weekend in a city hotel and three days in a beach hotel and it’s coming in at £2100 without spending money added yet which surprises me as it’s all in the uk

sugarapplelane · 24/07/2026 10:22

4 nights in Istanbul came to about £2k with flights, hotel and spending money. Family of 3

Then 5 nights in a cottage in Yorkshire was about £1.2k all in including food, entertainment etc. Again family of 3

Then me and my DD are off to Bologna for 5 days at the end of August. Flights and hotel are £800 so I reckon it will be £1.5k all in after all the gorgeous food and gelato we’ll eat there

Our cheapest holiday was probably one of our kids favourite holidays when they were little. The world was in lockdown with no flights going anywhere and we booked a last minute PGL family holiday when our flights to Asia were cancelled.

We went to PGL in Dorset as a family. Stayed in one of the dorm rooms in bunk beds! All food and full daily scheduled activities for the week. Just under £1,000. The kids had a ball!

I don’t know if PGL still do family holidays or whether it was just a lockdown thing but if they do, I highly recommend it for families with primary school aged children. Amazing value and the kids love taking their parents to these trips they usually go to with school.

£350 for a fortnight on a caravan site in Yorkshire. Sea view, gorgeous outdoor living, some meals out but most cooked in the caravan. I know it seems nothing compared to all these hugely expensive holidays but it has been one of my happiest holidays yet. Peaceful, beautiful scenery, gorgeous weather, swimming, cycling, walking, mooching local towns. It's what we've always done and our kids have loved it as they have grown up. We love our caravan and it saves us so much money - no way we could afford the eye watering prices on this thread.

Caravan holidays are some of my favourite memories from my childhood. Just did a long weekend away for £189 and my kids absolutely loved it - so did my husband to the point he wanted to book another on the way home 😂😂

We already had next year's booked for just £83 in half term!! Mon to Fri in Hafan y Mor. Can't wait 😀

Yes, I consider myself well paid however I aim for under 1k per person. So Ireland, character property (£1400) plus ferry (£600) plus food (same as I’d normally buy) plus a few days out that cost about £150. That’s for eight nights three people.

I also do a short break with my son and aim to spend £500 for about 3’nights. This year it was Cornwall by train via London. I think we may have gone slightly over but it was a fantastic trip.

i pay in cash up front for holidays. I would always budget something annually. I am a little constrained by pets and caring duties so can’t manage a full two weeks anyway. I am mid 50s and 10-15 years ago tje priority was nursery fees, 5-10 years ago I prioritised paying off the mortgage and now I prioritise my pension. Every 10-20k spend is another year working for me and I am knackered! So yeah, I am curious if people pay on credit card, whether they claim any benefits, whether they have a pension, paid off mortgage etc etc. or if this is truly disposable income available after all the serious stuff is dealt with. I am also very happy with the holidays we have taken as a family so I don’t feel we are missing out.

We budget it in advance. DH is reasonably well paid, I'm a SAHM so we don't have any nursery/childcare fees. Our mortgage is paid off, we decided to stay in a smaller 3 bed rather than buying a bigger family house so we'd have more disposable income. We also don't have car payments, we save in advance and buy cheaper/older cars. DH contributes substantially to his salary sacrifice pension and I have a SIPP. The bottom line is that we save a substantial amount every month and budget half of that for travel. We want our kids to see the world and are happy to compromise elsewhere to pay for it. It's a massive privilege of course to have that level of choice. But I know loads of people with huge mortgages and two cars on a PCP at £500 a month each. It's all just different choices/priorities.

£43K on a holiday is just stupid. Not even multi-millionaires I know spend this much on a holiday. Unless you're a WAG and bringing the whole football team on holiday with you?

Quite a few more people thank you think spend this on holidays, this isn’t classed as a massive booking where I work. £39k for 3 people (8nights) not in school holidays yesterday. Biggest I’ve done is £280k for 2 weeks and would have cost circa around £100k whilst they were out there.

You’d have absolutely no idea looking at people, but that’s the nice thing! I had a client come in for a £3k price match, they’ve spent £200k with me in the last 2 years now.

namechange6766333545544 · 24/07/2026 10:53

About £1800 for me and my husband to Italy, out of season. We never do luxury holidays but we’ve always had a good time so far.

Gallusoldbesom · 24/07/2026 10:56

£1800 for 2 adults for a week in 4* hotel in Greece b and b. Plus about £800 for meals, drinks etc. Went with Jet2 for first time ever, normally book everything ourselves and seem to spend a lot more! Was great not having to worry about luggage costs and getting from the airport to the hotel.

sugarapplelane · 24/07/2026 10:57

Weeeeeeeeeee · 24/07/2026 08:33

£1,000 on hotel with airport parking, flights and transfers.
Accommodation free (family owned).
£1,200 spending money.

So £2,200 in total.

12 nights in an apartment in Spain during the last 2 weeks of October. 2 adults, 1 child.

We have the same holiday every year - it takes our entire holiday budget!

Not sure if it's relevant but combined income of c.£115k.

Out of interest, only because it baffles me, but why do you do the same holiday every year? We have loved everywhere we’ve been in Holiday ( except Istanbul, which we liked),and would love to return to most places, but there are soo many other places in the world to see. I probably only have around 20 holidays left in my life and would hate to die knowing I have only ever visited Spain!

Fly1ngSquirrel · 24/07/2026 10:58

2 adults, 2 children. Three weeks in Serbia and Bosnia in August. Return flights with luggage cost 700€, car hire for the duration 270€, accommodation (a mix of apartments and hotels) 900€ plus about 1200€ for food and day trips. Total cost around 3000€. We spent as bit more last year travelling around other Balkan counties. We had an absolute blast, we did some cities and towns but visited national parks and swam in lakes mostly.

Hoteljune226 · 24/07/2026 11:06

No summer holiday this year and we are avoiding the heat while adjusting to a new long term illness.

We're going to go out of season - October €1600 for a city break and April €4400 for a cruise for 4.

Florida for 4, approx 30k including tickets to the Universal and Disney parks, Discovery Cove, paid for express passes on some days at Disney and premium on Virgin flights.

I did this for £13k and had an amazing time! You've been robbed!

My teenage daughter and I are going to Aruba end of August for a week 😃 so excited as have never been to a Caribbean island.

  • Flights for the 2 of us cost £1300;
  • Beachfront holiday apartment £400 (could have got cheaper accommodation if not beachfront);
  • Plus spending money of course.

We're flying via Boston with a very long stop-over either side so will try to enjoy a few activities in Boston as well.

Having a dilemma as to whether to add on a day at the US Open to our trip 😬 it would add at least another £1000 (tickets to the tennis for 2 and change of flights out of NYC instead of Boston). Seems very wasteful but we're huge tennis fans and will be so close to NYC on our way back from Aruba. We've never been to the US Open. 🎾

Judging by these prices I’m never going again!

Some people clearly have too much money to spend and some are being ripped off.

You can definitely do holidays on a budget!

XelaM · 24/07/2026 11:41

The poster who spent £280K on a holiday once probably bought an actual holiday home 🏠

I dont think mumsnet is a good place for holiday prices. Not everyone is on over 100k a year. There are def cheaper options than many of these! We arent doing a summer holiday this year. We went to Rome in March for 4 nights(family of 4). It cost us just under 2k, for everything, including food and attractions. DD12 is off to Disneyland paris in Oct(school trip) - £680. That's it for the year.
