I'm curious, how much did your summer holiday cost this year?

How much are people paying to go on holiday this year?

Our stats:
2 adults 2 children
1 week in July to Lanzarote
Basic 2 star self catering apts, small pool, all clean and pleasant. No luxury.
£1800
Spending money approx £1500

We eat out for lunch and dinner each day, visit a music bar/play pool after dinner and do a few local day trips but kids happy with pool/beach/playparks. They could run up and down a wall beside stairs for hours!

I pass by some of the bigger hotels with the entertainment and activities and wonder if we would like that. Would anyone share how much they are paying for these types of holidays?

Just wondering how much people are paying for different holidays and also, as an aside, when is the best time to book for best deals?

Not aimed particularly at this poster, but I'm surprised that a few people have said they've taken a certain amount of spending money; considering most people don't spend cash at home, do you actually take cash or do you mean you put that onto a specific card, or account?

I find its best to have a some cash. Usually for the smaller shops and boutiques, taxis and others smaller purchases. Like lunches in the smaller bakeries/cafes. Or ice creams etc.

I just booked a last minute mini-holiday to Ibiza for me and my teenager 🥳 £504 for 4 full days all-in (flights plus all-inclusive hotel by the beach with pools 🏖️). So excited!!!

It has always been a bit of a fantasy of mine just to look up the cheapest flights anywhere on skyscanner and go there spontaneously. Turns out Ibiza was the cheapest destination (flights were about £19 per person each way). The hotel was most of the expense, but it would have been cheaper if I didn't pick the flexible cancellation option and I figured AI will be cheaper for us than having to purchase drinks/ eat out. Otherwise the flights plus hotel would have been even cheaper.

I would recommend looking at skyscanner and Booking.com and just playing around with dates and last minute deals.

HarrietSchulenberg · 01/08/2026 01:09

£398 for 3 of us (me, DH, youngest child who is 19, and DDog) for 7 nights camping in different locations in Scotland. Cost includes ferries but not diesel for car which will probably be another £150. Add in food/eating out a couple of nights and probably £800 in total.
Much cheaper than carting us all off on flights somewhere. Taxi runs to and from airport alone would be £160.

That’s how I met my DH. Friends and I booked the cheapest holiday to somewhere warm that we could find. He was in Ibiza with his friends

28 years ago and many more holidays.

Have a great time!

What star* hotel? It’s hard to compare price/value when people don’t share this.

It's 3 * and probably very average but for 4 days by the beach 🏖️ I thought it was amazing as it was coming up much more expensive when I had a play around with dates. It's the Bluesea Coral Beach Hotel and they gave the child place free (although my daughter is 16!) but it only worked on certain dates

You're probably a lot pickier with your destinations than I was 😂 I literally put "Explore everywhere" on skyscanner.

When I was younger, I was weirdly fixated on never visiting the same city twice and going somewhere new every holiday. I’m now approaching 40 and have realised that, if you like somewhere, then there’s also a lot to be said for repeat visits.

For me, that place happens to be Japan and we visit at least once a year now. We try to include new cities each time, but there are also places that we go back to in the ones that we’ve visited before. I have restaurants and cafes that I look forward to visiting and I look forward to the familiar train jingles, the “mamonaku…” announcements, my favourite Japanese snacks and drinks. I send pictures to my family of places we went to together on a previous trip and things we enjoyed and it brings back nice memories.

Clearly that poster gets that same pleasure out of visiting Florida.

Yes I can appreciate that. Disney itself can be very same-y though although I appreciate if she's visiting further afield and exploring everything the state has to offer I can understand that.

Takoneko · 06/08/2026 18:24

@EvieBB Maybe samey for some people but I know people who love all of the different seasonal events and like to see the new parades. For them, going at Christmas vs Easter vs Halloween is a completely different experience. I’ve never been, but have met people who go back again and again.

There’s definitely things that I go back to every time I’m in Tokyo that other people would find samey, but that I will never get bored of because of my hobbies and interests.

FurForksSake · 09/08/2026 22:21

I’ve just added up our week in wales. We stayed in a very nice holiday cottage with a hot tub and extensive grounds. It had four bedrooms and one was an en-suite. That cost us £2.5k for a week. We then spent £1k on everything else. This includes some food which we bought home, probably £25 worth. Petrol was from driving a 4hr journey each way and then driving around Snowdonia. We have a hybrid and forgot the charging cable and the charger mentioned on the website didn’t exist anyway. We’d have saved money if we’d been able to do that.

4k for two adults...
7 night Mediterranean cruise with upgraded premier all inclusive package( better cocktails) but with inside cabin to keep costs down, followed by 4 nights in an AI beach front 4* hotel in Ayai Napa. Cost included choosing plane seats etc etc . With TUI so whole package is under one booking and all transfers included. We're going in exactly 3weeks and I'm so excited I could burst 🤣🤣

shortsaint · 12/08/2026 20:04

@TickingcrocodileI’m with you on the joys of ferry + taking your car with you to France. We did 10 nights inc 1 overnight on the ferry at a mix of s/c plus Hotels for just over £2k. Spending money perhaps £500? (Would have spent similar in UK) just 2 of us, but would have been similar with 3.

The biggest expense was the £800 ferry. And we brought back a lot of good cheap wine 😆.

Bulldog01 · 13/08/2026 07:18
