I'm curious, how much did your summer holiday cost this year?

How much are people paying to go on holiday this year?

Our stats:
2 adults 2 children
1 week in July to Lanzarote
Basic 2 star self catering apts, small pool, all clean and pleasant. No luxury.
£1800
Spending money approx £1500

We eat out for lunch and dinner each day, visit a music bar/play pool after dinner and do a few local day trips but kids happy with pool/beach/playparks. They could run up and down a wall beside stairs for hours!

I pass by some of the bigger hotels with the entertainment and activities and wonder if we would like that. Would anyone share how much they are paying for these types of holidays?

Just wondering how much people are paying for different holidays and also, as an aside, when is the best time to book for best deals?

@Myli1 makes a difference when there is only two of you though. Most are paying with kids or older teenager / adults

Absolutely. A holiday for a couple is going to be half the price of a holiday with two teens if you’re flying and staying in a hotel - double the flights, double the rooms and food.

Went at Easter but AI in Egypt for a week, family of 4, £3.6k

Natsku · 24/07/2026 09:06

Nearly 4 weeks in the UK, one week in an air bnb (I only paid half as my parents paid their half), 3 nights in travelodge/hotels and the rest of the time staying with my parents. Spent about 3k altogether including flights for me and two kids and a lot of days out (also paid for my parents). There were some dinners out but my parents paid for most of those. Contributions to food shop too but tbh mum paid for most of that.

I knew it would land badly. However, I am a multi millionaire, I have no debt, we make a lot of money. I would rather spend it than hoard it - better for the economy - or should I stop working and live off my wealth?

Travel employs local people and we try and be as eco as possible, part of the reason it costs so much.

I’d love to know where you’re going!

Holidays are only relevant to the family going on them. Someone will always have something to say about what you spend on them!

£350 for a fortnight on a caravan site in Yorkshire. Sea view, gorgeous outdoor living, some meals out but most cooked in the caravan. I know it seems nothing compared to all these hugely expensive holidays but it has been one of my happiest holidays yet. Peaceful, beautiful scenery, gorgeous weather, swimming, cycling, walking, mooching local towns. It's what we've always done and our kids have loved it as they have grown up. We love our caravan and it saves us so much money - no way we could afford the eye watering prices on this thread.

This sounds wonderful. And what a wonderful childhood. Thats so much more than just a holiday. You cant buy that.
Genuinely.
I would have loved our own mobile home.

bibliomania · 24/07/2026 09:17

DD did her A-levels this year, so we've both gone a bit mad with the freedom. She's doing several short hops to Europe with friends which she is paying for herself, hallelujah, and I paid for the two of us to do a cycling trip in Scotland for one week for around £1.5k.

I'll also do some solo trips over the next three months. One week walking in England, around £800 (some nights in dorms, some in hotels). One week interrailing in Europe, probably around £1.2k. One week on a guiding walking in Europe, around £1.3k. I probably spend too much considering my income, but I'm happy to skimp on everything else and I won't be in debt as a result.

Two weeks in Costa Brava in a fab campsite... 2adults, two kids 7+9.... 3 bedroomed cabin, flights, bags, transfer. Last week of may, first week of June... €1650. Spending €1800. Just fab

Wow, that's good value. I was pricing up a similar trip to Costa Brava for a week next May half term and the cheapest flights alone were £1200.

Brazil and Argentina (briefly).

very excited but prepared to be called a mug 😝😁

Oh I missed this! 🤦🏻‍♀️ sorry!

it will be amazing! DH did a similar trip for the World Cup in Brazil, although they stayed in hostels and home stays and camped in the rainforest.

hope you have the best time!

Rome, end of august.
1 adult, 2 teens. 5 nights.
£834 + Spending money.

IndelibleTurnip · 24/07/2026 09:26

£900 for a week in a cottage in Cornwall, 2 adults, one child, one dog! We’ll do a supermarket shop when we get there (around £100) as we’ll eat in apart from the odd pasty/cream tea out, and spending money around £300-400 for the week for day trips - Eden project, beach trips etc. Plus petrol as we’re driving.

Bettyboop2530 · 24/07/2026 09:30

We are going in October for a change as couldn't justify summer prices.
1 week all inclusive in Magic Natura Benidorm £1500 - both kids free as one on our booking and one on parents. To go in June was about 3k and July or August was closer to 4k.

PUER125 · 24/07/2026 09:30

Six adults, two teens, and three under ten, in a villa in Florida for a fortnight. £27,000.

We are doing the Disney parks but not Universal.

Food and spending money is on top, so who knows what the total will be!

It is definitely a once in a lifetime trip for most of us, although two of the adults have done it before, as children.

Pigwig10 · 24/07/2026 09:35

5 people (was supposed to be 6 but the 6th can’t come now). £26k 2 weeks in August, in a very lovely 5 bed villa near Marbella in Spain. Flights, lounges & transfers included. Food, eating out and general spending money will be extra.

happysunr1se · 22/07/2026 13:32

In August I've got a week in Looe, Cornwall self catering apartment, sleeps 4, £1300, for 2 x adults and 1 x 11y.o

Normally we have pasty for lunch and go out for dinner each night so probably spend around extra 1k while we're there.

We like hiking and beach so probably won't spend much on days out.

Beautiful place. I love Cornwall

Realhousewife1978 · 24/07/2026 09:38

5 nights in Bordeaux in July with DH and DD19

AirBnB accommodation and flights - £600
airport parking £100
Spending money £1,000
total £1,700

supersop60 · 24/07/2026 09:38

At the risk of sounding like Minty Python’s Four Yorkshiremen - we just spent £112 on 4 days camping in Suffolk. Eating out and entertainment probably £200.
OTOH - my DD’s bf’s family just went to Canada for £47K

Iworkmiricles · 24/07/2026 09:39

I don't do holidays, mainly because something always goes wrong! Last time the car was a financial write off. We were all fine, but moterway debris scratched every panel on the car except the boot.
That trip cost me £4k for a replacement and I didn't even get a holiday 😂😂

How does everyone afford these holidays?! Even £3k on a holiday feels like an enormous amount to save up and spend in one year.

ETA this is a genuine question, I must be going wrong somewhere…!

Edited

Please remember that I reckon half of what you see on Mumsnet is utter crap. I could have come on here and said £75k on a 7 day cruise, you would have no way of knowing if its complete bullshit or not. Im sure you could look online for stats but considering average wages are around £30k I think, the average holiday cost is going to be affordable to that.

For us we have spent far more on our last two holidays but I won a large chunk of money and my Husband got a large financial gift. I would not have spent this much ordinarily and will likely go back to our more reasonably priced holidays but we decided fuck it, we had the money, why not.

We also have Malta in Oct for 2 adults, 2 teens, 4 nights, and that's costing £1,098.

Disneyland Paris for 2 days in December (early flight out, late flight back) 2 full day in the parks staying in disney and that is costing £1,131 for flights, hotel, tickets. 2 adults and 2 teens.

How people afford it comes down to all sorts of reasons.

Some people simply earn more than you might expect, or they have lower monthly outgoings so they're able to save more.

Others put holidays on a 0% credit card and pay it off over the course of the year, then do the same again the following year.

Some people have years where they receive an inheritance or come into a larger sum of money, which obviously makes a big difference.

And, let's be honest, some people on threads like this are exaggerating a bit & making stuff up.

A lot of families also save throughout the year because holidays are what they choose to prioritise their spending on.

Personally, I'd say spending £3k on a family holiday would be a very cheap year for us.

Last year we went to the Bahamas, two adults and two teenagers. We used two Amex companion vouchers, stayed three nights at Atlantis and the rest of the trip in a beachfront hotel. It was a 9-night holiday that cost around £3.3k, and we spent another £1.7k while we were there, so about £5k all in.

To me, that's a pretty average amount for a family holiday. Having said that, I wouldn't spend anywhere near that much for a holiday in Europe.

People just have different priorities for their money. We both earn quite a lot and it just comes out of our normal earnings. We could afford for me to be a SAHM but I live for my holidays and love seeing the world with my kids so I work so that we don’t need to budget carefully.

We spend about £10k per holiday and go away about 4 times a year, on average. Occasionally priorities change. One year we did lots of work on the house so had cheap and cheerful holidays that year.

Iliketulips · 24/07/2026 10:15

We tend to do mini breaks

Log cabin in Feb - £286 (lucky in that we qualify for double discount)

4 day caravan break £410 in June.

Camping trip next week - £96.

Only thing we tend to pay for are travel and coffee or a meal out. Sometimes we might buy clothes.

We are going away just the two of us in September for a city break - that's just under £1400 - reckon we'll spend a max of £100 per day. This is for a special wedding anniversary.
