I'm curious, how much did your summer holiday cost this year?

How much are people paying to go on holiday this year?

Our stats:
2 adults 2 children
1 week in July to Lanzarote
Basic 2 star self catering apts, small pool, all clean and pleasant. No luxury.
£1800
Spending money approx £1500

We eat out for lunch and dinner each day, visit a music bar/play pool after dinner and do a few local day trips but kids happy with pool/beach/playparks. They could run up and down a wall beside stairs for hours!

I pass by some of the bigger hotels with the entertainment and activities and wonder if we would like that. Would anyone share how much they are paying for these types of holidays?

Just wondering how much people are paying for different holidays and also, as an aside, when is the best time to book for best deals?

We camp in the UK. It’s a few hundred quid in peak season, there’s a pool and the kids love it. It’s also better for the environment not flying.

@Franjipanl8r my worst nightmare 😂

Just over £6k package holiday half board 5* hotel for 7 nights, popular Greek Island. Early August.

Family of four including older teenagers, two rooms.

Airport parking and spending money/drinks at hotel etc will add another £500-800ish.

Edited

@Newpostnewnamenew weve spent this amount for 8 nights Miami including 4 night cruise! That’s 2 adults 2 older teenagers !

How does everyone afford these holidays?! Even £3k on a holiday feels like an enormous amount to save up and spend in one year.

ETA this is a genuine question, I must be going wrong somewhere…!

Edited

I'm on a good wage and some of the amounts listed here are bonkers.

We can only afford it as we’re mortgage free, we also have an airbnb on our property, so the money we make there becomes our holiday fund.

£5000 for 2 adults and 1 child for a 1 week AI cruise to the fjords in August with one excursion booked. This is in a standard balcony cabin.

This also includes parking for the week and a night in a premier inn, as well as a budget of £150 per day for port days e.g museums, activities, transport, souvenirs, local snacks etc.

4 days in Amsterdam, just me and DH. Total 1,000 ish, cheapish hotel and cheap flights, but we came here to party and that will run up the bill. My dad is having the kids so I’ve left him with my card (don’t know the cost including that, depends how much he’s indulged them).

Later in the summer we are taking the kids camping on Loch Lomond which should be somewhat cheap provided we can steer them away from the sea life center 😭.

Itison is doing a deal on Sealife just now 😃

£2 of admin charges for flights that I used Avios and companion voucher for, £0 accom or food as staying with friends, £500 for the nanny I’m hiring to help out with my child in the villa :-) lucky me I know!

Are you not contributing to any food/drink costs?

CrepuscularCritter · 24/07/2026 08:03

Plan A: Italian cruise for 2 adults £4800 plus flights £485 each.

Thwarted by leg in a cast, so no flights.

Plan B: 2 bed holiday cottage 5 miles from Devon coast: £800. Fuel & spends, probably about £700. Followed by 3 nights London hotel £1500 and similar spends to Devon.

Not cheap, but it's been a difficult year...

KiwiCat01 · 24/07/2026 08:07

About 12.5k euro all in, 10 days in all inclusive Mexico, 2 half day excursions and tips.

KiwiCat01 · 24/07/2026 08:11

Planning Thailand next Christmas hopefully for around the same budget. My sister is getting married next summer so our holiday will be at Christmas. I would like to do Disney Paris or a long weekend to see the pyramids in between. My kids would prefer Disney I’d love to see Egypt.

HeNeedsRehab · 24/07/2026 08:12

We pay for ours by being those mythical 6 figure salary people.

I save weekly for holidays and trips so they are paid upfront with spending money saved before we go. So we don’t get into debt for it.

Over the years our holidays have grown in budget and geography, we had plenty of years of holidaying in static caravans. Tbf we still do, can’t beat them for an easy long weekend!

£1500 on a three bed cottage in Fleury La Foret, Normandy, in June for two adults and our 4yo for a week and then probably an extra £300 while there (can't enjoyably eat out with a 4yo so tended to stay in and use the pool and large garden) We took the ferry which was about £130 and then £100 petrol?

springtome · 24/07/2026 08:15

one week in Scotland next month with another family (we are related) family. We are a family of 4 adults. Our share of the holiday rental is £750, travel costs probably £150, will maybe spend £500 on food drink etc so perhaps £1300 total. Thats about normal for us.

ALinktoHyrule · 24/07/2026 08:19

£350 for a fortnight on a caravan site in Yorkshire. Sea view, gorgeous outdoor living, some meals out but most cooked in the caravan. I know it seems nothing compared to all these hugely expensive holidays but it has been one of my happiest holidays yet. Peaceful, beautiful scenery, gorgeous weather, swimming, cycling, walking, mooching local towns. It's what we've always done and our kids have loved it as they have grown up. We love our caravan and it saves us so much money - no way we could afford the eye watering prices on this thread.

Your holiday sounds very similar to mine (upthread) - glad I am not the only one on the thread who enjoys an inexpensive caravan holiday.

About £4000. 7 people, 2 weeks in a cottage in the UK.

Lordofmyflies · 24/07/2026 08:26

We usually spend about £15-20k for our 2 week summer holiday and then a further £15k on 2 x one week breaks abroad. We are a family of 2 adults and 2 late teens.
we afford it by both working full time in good jobs that pay well at the top of our career ladder. We prioritise holidays and travel and try and go to places off the beaten track and spend on experiences which often adds to the cost.

Rakeandho · 24/07/2026 08:30

You can tell who doesn’t have to go in school holidays!

Portugal
2 adults, one child.
£900 flights
£500 mates rates villa (very fortunate!)
£1000 ish spending money-Ubers, meals etc.

Likewise, crazy money spent.

£1,000 on hotel with airport parking, flights and transfers.
Accommodation free (family owned).
£1,200 spending money.

So £2,200 in total.

12 nights in an apartment in Spain during the last 2 weeks of October. 2 adults, 1 child.

We have the same holiday every year - it takes our entire holiday budget!

Not sure if it's relevant but combined income of c.£115k.

urghhh47 · 24/07/2026 08:34

I knew it would land badly. However, I am a multi millionaire, I have no debt, we make a lot of money. I would rather spend it than hoard it - better for the economy - or should I stop working and live off my wealth?

Travel employs local people and we try and be as eco as possible, part of the reason it costs so much.

Multi-millionaire? Good for you. If I had the money, I'd spend it, too!

Enjoy, what will undoubtedly be, an insane trip!
