HELP! Flying out tomorrow ,passport expires in July 2026

Hi all,

Bit of a panic here and hoping someone has been through something similar.
Just realised my 6 year old’s British passport expires July 2026 and we’re flying to Albania tomorrow from London, coming back on 13 June 2026.

I’ve read that Albania needs 3 months validity left after you leave and now I’m worried we might not be allowed to travel.

Has anyone actually been in this situation? Did you get stopped at check in or were you still allowed to go?
I’m just trying to work out how strict this really is in real life,a part of me hopes miraculously they will let us through.
Any experiences would really help !

@Zonder can you recommend somewhere coastal please?

We loved Dhermi, Harame and Ksamil. We didn't love Sarande because it is just so busy.

Butterme · Yesterday 17:41

I’m so pleased that you have found a solution ❤️

Your control issues with your DCs are a bit concerning but I’m glad you’re aware of it and having therapy.
You really don’t want this impacting them.

I hope you have a lovely holiday when it comes 💐

Up and coming? It already upped and came! I've been twice and would happily go again. Beautiful mountains, beaches, turquoise sea. Great food, friendly people, and not expensive . Lovely country.

I’ve heard loads of amazing things about Albania, it is such a beautiful country.

Do you know if it’s safe for a non-white single parent?

Why didnt you check the passports ages ago? You need to do what I did- ring up the passport office now and book an emergency appointment. Be prepared to wait all day in Liverpool- good luck.

RTFT incl the date of the OP's posts

BECAUSE EACH COUNTRY DECIDES ITS OWN RULES, NOT THE UK PASSPORT OFFICE.

Thats just the situation now, doesn’t mean it’s right.
The PP was saying it makes no sense to have a document with an expiry date that can only be used 6 months before.
Which it doesn’t.

And yes people get delayed etc but as long as they were booked to go and are still trying to get back, why on earth should it matter if it expired ?

Surely being in a foreign country with an invalid passport renders you an illegal immigrant? The extra time is so tourists avoid becoming illegal immigrants by accident e.g. illness extending stay.
I have a relative who ended up in custody wearing an orange jumpsuit when he outstayed his US visa many years ago.

Redflagsabounded · Yesterday 18:32

I'm so glad you've managed to sort it out and hope you all have a wonderful holiday.

I'm sorry some people have been snarky - like they've never made a mistake in their lives? Ignore them.

Witchonenowbob · Yesterday 18:36

It's not really rude. We've never been abroad as a family but I know when our passports expire and update them all at the same time and in plenty of time.

Have you read the OPs posts as to why she thought her DCs passport would be in date?

It’s a mistake, ever made one?

Superstar22 · Yesterday 18:40

No they don’t. We had an apt for a fast track
on Monday and it came through the post on Thursday.

Witchonenowbob · Yesterday 18:43

JuliaRobHurts · Yesterday 13:57

If OP had posted that passports had expired but DH had assured her he had checked them, there would be alot of peopl saying you should have checked them your self, but an insane number of people calling DH all kinds of names under the sun (some tof the language on MN is incredible c*t this C*t that).

Yet stating it was daft to not have checked the passports seems to be some sort of unforgivable thing to say.

So two wrongs don’t make it right

I would love to say yes but in reality I just don't know. Some Indian friends of ours asked the same. I'm so sorry you have to even think about that. Single parent would be fine.

igelkott2026 · Yesterday 19:35

Sorry OP it's a completely stupid rule and it's easy to trip up on. We apparently pay for 10 year passports that we have to renew after 9.5 years!

Edited

You don't need 3 months for that. And even if you did, why can't it be added in the unlikely event that you are stuck there longer. I can understand maybe needing a week's grace to deal with plane delays, volcanos erupting, that sort of thing. But 3 and it's often 6 months, is completely ridiculous.

childpassporthell · Yesterday 19:37

Oh OP.

I realised four days before our holiday last year that my child's passport was going to be just out of date on return. I hadn't heard about the change in rules.

I ordered a replacement using the express service immediately, but the bank holiday added to the hold of five working days.

So the replacement arrived half-way through the holiday. We went straight to the airport to join my partner and other children. It added about £1000-£1500 to holiday costs and was a horrible experience.

MyCottageGarden · Yesterday 19:42

Namechangeforthisdilemma1 · Yesterday 11:22

Yes I have done this too. Don’t get why OP is saying it’s not an option and would rather lose £3k…

As has been stated on the thread numerous times this is NOT POSSIBLE FOR CHILDREN’S PASSPORTS!!!!!

Potterxoxo · Yesterday 19:46

@Butterme
Based on what we know from friends and family Albania is generally very safe ,even for single parents . The people are very friendly and very helpful . In terms of race (being non-white ) firstly I am sorry you have to worry about that . Secondly based on what I know and have heard of Albanian people are very curious and love to stare at foreigners (including white ones ) but not because of racism, mostly out of curiosity. Recently there are loads more foreigners, that have immigrated to Albania from all over the world so it must be more common now for the Albanians to see people coming from different backgrounds. I think you would be safe travelling there honestly .

MyCottageGarden · Yesterday 19:49

Oh op I’m so glad the airline had some kind of option to change the flights rather than just a total loss. What a relief! The weather will be nicer in June anyway! (Joking, I’m sure it’s already nice in Albania!). I’m a huge believer in these things happening for a reason, so there will be some hidden reason why you weren’t meant to go today. You’ll discover what that reason is, eventually. Enjoy your trip :) 🏝️

@childpassporthell
Oh gosh, that sounds absolutely heartbreaking. I can only imagine how stressful it must have been watching the holiday start without you and then having to deal with the extra cost on top of everything else.
For so many families, saving up for one holiday is hard enough these days, let alone finding another £1000–£1500 at short notice.
We will have to deal with the money ordeal when we get back ,it’s going to be a tight couple of months for a while .

THAT'S TRUE, BUT MOST COUNTRIES HAVE THE SAME STUPID RULE.

What I forgot to say was - I understand! It's awful because it's a simple human error but a merciless system.

We have family and friends that are from Albania .
It is a lovely place to go on holiday ,we chose a small town very family friendly ,reasonably priced considering that we would stay there for a period of three weeks and besides we have friends that live there . Albania is a hot spot nowadays for tourists but not overcrowded like your usual tourist destinations . The town we chose is by the lakeside ,has beautiful scenery ,homegrown food and just generally peaceful.

The passports expiry situation it is frustrating to me to @NameChangeMay2026 .
If my passport expires in said date let I be valid till said date ,why do I have to calculate months prior to expiry and time from date of issue .
Not that I won’t now ! This even will haunt me ,will check passports even when not going on holiday just to be on top of it .

I feel much better now ,after rebooking our flights . Still need to resolve accommodation but that’s looking hopeful .
@millymollymandy321 I hope this post did do just that ,i would hate for this to happen to anyone .

Please stop giving yourself a hard time. We all make mistakes. You didn’t do it deliberately. We are all human x

EdithBond · Yesterday 20:22

Hi OP, with kids of that age, the mental load is huge, especially as sole carer. Mistakes happen.

But it’s how you respond to them that matters. Very well done for getting your flights changed in time and DD’s passport ordered. Hope you manage to rebook the accommodation, the school is OK and you all have a wonderful time ❤️ I’d love to go to Albania. Albanian friends have told us so much about it.

It’ll be hot in UK this half-term, so maybe a trip to a beach or countryside will make up for next week.

I birthed my DCs at home and didn’t ever want to leave them overnight when little, even though I worked. So understand how you feel about that 🙂. They grow up so fast, it’s important to enjoy every minute.

It took me a while but I am definitely working on it . It’s better than it was before ,just not ready to leave her for such a long time yet .
If you ever need to know more about Albania please do ask ,like I mentioned we have friends and family from there and soon will experience it first hand .
