HELP! Flying out tomorrow ,passport expires in July 2026

Hi all,

Bit of a panic here and hoping someone has been through something similar.
Just realised my 6 year old’s British passport expires July 2026 and we’re flying to Albania tomorrow from London, coming back on 13 June 2026.

I’ve read that Albania needs 3 months validity left after you leave and now I’m worried we might not be allowed to travel.

Has anyone actually been in this situation? Did you get stopped at check in or were you still allowed to go?
I’m just trying to work out how strict this really is in real life,a part of me hopes miraculously they will let us through.
Any experiences would really help !

This thing about needing to have X amount of time left on your passport is really stupid, imo. A passport should be valid and usable as long as it's in date. The only requirement on leaving your own country should be that your passport is in date on the day you return. Currently all expiration dates are wrong, since you can't use the passport for its intended purpose within six months of that date. 😡

IKR!
Why don’t they print the “this is actually the last day you can travel with this passport” date.
Many people get caught out and/or find it confusing.
It doesn’t have to be.

You don’t seem ti have a grip on this. Some countries have no requirement for your passport to be valid beyond its end date.

Some countries have 3 months and others 6 months. This is determined by the countries themselves (or the EU).

It’s stupid imo to think a single body should actively make this decision on the behalf of every country on the planet, and that zero is the right answer. If you are meant to fly back on the last flight on the day your passport expires and the flight gets cancelled/you are sick and can’t travel or you miss the flight, what then?!

BECAUSE EACH COUNTRY DECIDES ITS OWN RULES, NOT THE UK PASSPORT OFFICE.

I have reminders set on my online calendar for 7-8 months before various passports expire. Just this week told my husband he needed to renew his as it was down to 5 months (he has dual nationality, so he's got a back-up!), he was convinced he had years left n it until he went to check 🙄

The thing is - people who are organised enough to set calendar reminders are probably the people that check the passport properly when booking!
I aspire to be such a person!

Oh ok - no need to yell at me.

We have family and friends that are from Albania .
It is a lovely place to go on holiday ,we chose a small town very family friendly ,reasonably priced considering that we would stay there for a period of three weeks and besides we have friends that live there . Albania is a hot spot nowadays for tourists but not overcrowded like your usual tourist destinations . The town we chose is by the lakeside ,has beautiful scenery ,homegrown food and just generally peaceful.

The passports expiry situation it is frustrating to me to @NameChangeMay2026 .
If my passport expires in said date let I be valid till said date ,why do I have to calculate months prior to expiry and time from date of issue .
Not that I won’t now ! This even will haunt me ,will check passports even when not going on holiday just to be on top of it .

I feel much better now ,after rebooking our flights . Still need to resolve accommodation but that’s looking hopeful .
@millymollymandy321 I hope this post did do just that ,i would hate for this to happen to anyone .

What a stressful situation. I'm sorry you went through that. I can see myself doing exactly the same thing. Glad things worked out.

Don’t be rude, absolutely no need. Thank you.

Edited

You don’t like people matching your energy? You can be rude, but others mustn’t?

Really?

Because different countries require different lengths of buffer.
Frustrating I know; but their countries, their rules.

I'm intrigued by OP taking 2 children to Albania of all places!

Is it an up-and-coming holiday hotspot?

Albania is quite a an ‘up and coming’ holiday destination. Beautiful views, beaches, cheap, and very family friendly (I have had at least three single mum friends, who sing the praises of how kind all the locals were to their kids). in fact, the population in general, seem very lovely!
The seafood is also, out of this world!
Can’t wait to visit again. I really hope the OP and family have a wonderful time!

honeyrider · 21/05/2026 16:00

OP although it's costing you more and you haven't lost the holiday at least you're getting a holiday so make the most of it when you get to go.

If you think of it when you get back please post a trip report. I don't know much about Albania but see it mentioned a lot as an up and coming destination.

nothingtoseehereatall · 21/05/2026 16:02

I'm so sorry OP, what a stressful day or so, I'm glad you managed to sort it out so that at least you still get a holiday. Ignore all the completely unhelpful "why didn't you check" messages from the flawless crowd who never do anything wrong, ever (hmmm)

Having said that - I do find this far more alarming than expired passports:

"My husband is great but he is just a sponsor for our family ,bless him that’s what I call him"

A sponsor for your family... is... a very very odd way to refer to your husband and co-parent.

Yes it is!! Beautiful place.

I am going to sound harsh here but some of your posts sound very naive.

Planning to go to the airport and seeing whether you can get away with are very strange comments and what do you mean by your husband is a sponsor??

harriethoyle · 21/05/2026 16:15

@Potterxoxo i don’t want to panic you further but wouldn’t it be better to get a new passport for your daughter THEN book new flights… what if there’s a delay on getting it back?

Delphin · 21/05/2026 16:17

@WhyUniverseWhy :
"It’s stupid imo to think a single body should actively make this decision on the behalf of every country on the planet, "

Well, they all agreed on how a passport should look and what data it contains, so this is just another agreement :-). I don't kniw which body this is but apparently it works.

@harriethoyle Ee had to act fast on choosing what to do with the flights , we had before 4 pm to change them or lose them all together and only be refunded next to nothing .
The service we paid for guarantees one week period to deliver a passport so hopefully will be able to have it ready well before the new flight time.

@nothingtoseehereatall Thank you so much for the kind works .
In terms of my relationship with my husband ,it’s a bit more complicated than what it sounds . I call him a sponsor jokingly but he pretty much is one,he is the sole provider and we made that decision together once we had our first . I wanted to stay at home with our daughter for as long as I could and did the same with my son . I am very particular with the way I raise my kids and I find it very hard to let go of that . I say this without exaggeration,I have never been anywhere without my kids since they were born ,unless absolutely necessary.
I laboured with my son for as long as I could at home and only spent three hours in the hospital all together .
I know this is an issue ,have been to therapy for it ,but this is a problem for another time now .
But my relationship isn’t black and white ,my husband accommodates what I want and offers to look after the kids here and there for me to go and spend some time me time or do something for my self but I just cannot let go of the kiddos .

nothingtoseehereatall · 21/05/2026 16:36

Ah bless you @Potterxoxo that sounds kind of tough on you - I mean I know its your choice, but I think long term definitely trying to let go a little bit, find yourself a little space might be a good thing. When they get big and independent, you don't want to feel like you've got nothing left. My sister was very similar and felt very lost once her kids got the the sort of secondary school ages where they naturally preferred to spend time with friends - it took her a lot of effort and sadness before she 'found' herself again. So look out for yourself!

I guess I WAS being naive . I was panic thinking ,eventually I realised there is no way out of this but changing the flights .
In terms of my husband,I tried to explain that in my prior post ,it’s a tricky situation.
My husband is amazing really ,just that’s how we have set the relationship with ourselves and the kids to be . He works very long hours for us to be able to afford to live they way we live and me to be able to stay with the kids and tend to the kids full time .

Up and coming? It already upped and came! I've been twice and would happily go again. Beautiful mountains, beaches, turquoise sea. Great food, friendly people, and not expensive . Lovely country.

You sound lovely OP. Your kids are very young still, don't beat yourself up

Nice change from parents who seem to dread spending any time with their kids

Have a lovely holiday when you get there

Ah well, your 6 year old will just have to go to school instead for the two weeks of school you were planning on missing before and after half term.

You have time to sort a new passport to salvage some of your trip, but you will have to leave in half term like everyone else (there is no 24 hour service for children's passport).

Are you this unnecessarily sanctimonious about everything? Fascinating.

PurpleFlower1983 · 21/05/2026 17:18

Glad you’ve got it sorted OP. Don’t know if someone has already posted this but just be aware with your own passport that it is now only valid for 10 years from date of issue, even if the valid too date is later than that. This is on the old red passports. It may not be an issue but thought I would mention in case you were not aware.
