Hi all,

Bit of a panic here and hoping someone has been through something similar.
Just realised my 6 year old’s British passport expires July 2026 and we’re flying to Albania tomorrow from London, coming back on 13 June 2026.

I’ve read that Albania needs 3 months validity left after you leave and now I’m worried we might not be allowed to travel.

Has anyone actually been in this situation? Did you get stopped at check in or were you still allowed to go?
I’m just trying to work out how strict this really is in real life,a part of me hopes miraculously they will let us through.
Any experiences would really help !

Why? It's just a renewal, no?

Becsue that is the rules, no?

Child protection I think. Can’t abduct your child, get an emergency passport and leave the country in the space of a few hours.

Fair enough! Makes sense.

Who gets two weeks at this time of year? Genuine q, because I thought no one did because of the exam timetable. I’d much rather two weeks now that pissing wet dark October. Please tell me and I’m moving there!!

One school in Bolton (that i know of) not sure its worth moving here just for that though Grin They have the same half term in October, its over Easter they have a week less than other schools.

Everyone makes mistakes but FFS the passports are the most vital part of travelling? If you forget your sunscreen or shades you can buy them on a holiday at a small cost, but issues with your passport can literally cost thousands.

I bet OP has spent plenty of hundreds of hours in advance detailing all the lovely places they will be visiting, online shopping nice outfits to wear, places to eat, but hasn't set aside 5 minutes to check all passports are ok.

It's a shame but can't say I have much sympathy. Fingers crossed OP is allowed to fly but I'd be fully prepared to be declined.

The way memory works is that we, as a general principle, categorise things in certain ways and once those mental models are there, they are hard to shift. In fact, a particular belief or conception can’t actually be erased, but only suppressed by a different mental model, and this takes time and proactive effort. The OP, it seems, has categorised children’s passports as being the same as adults’, for whatever reason - maybe an incorrect assumption on her part or incorrect information from someone else. Whatever the reason, once she believed this to be the case, it’s quite normal that this idea would be firmly lodged and she therefore wouldn’t check something that she didn’t think needed checking. It doesn’t indicate carelessness.

@Potterxoxo Really hope you get it sorted. I have lots of sympathy. Enjoy your holiday if you get there.

TheDenimPoet · 21/05/2026 13:00

It really pisses me off that a passport isn't valid even when it's in date. What's the point of having a date on it, if it's not valid up until that date? If you can't travel up to that date, why not put the ACTUAL date on that you're allowed to use it until?

However as others have said, you won't be able to use it. I'm so sorry. It's so easily done.

Ah well, your 6 year old will just have to go to school instead for the two weeks of school you were planning on missing before and after half term.

You have time to sort a new passport to salvage some of your trip, but you will have to leave in half term like everyone else (there is no 24 hour service for children's passport).

I teach six year olds and I got home ten minutes ago for my two week half term.

Motherbear44 · 21/05/2026 13:02

Another “me too” post. OP I almost missed a cruise because I only had 3 months left on my passport. American cruise ship required 6 months on passport. I knew mine ran out in three months.

I only realized 2 weeks before trip when I was supposed to be doing a university assignment and decided to check the ticket small print instead. I passed the university course AMD managed to get passport in time. My photo is a ten year reminder of the need to examine small print. I didn’t have time to do my hair before having photo done.

So it was not exactly the same - but it was a similar organization point. It happens to the best of us. I do think that in the case of airlines that passport expiry surely could be flagged. It won’t let you sign in with the tiniest error on your phone number or postcode. I live in a small country and it can be so hard to get country of residence and nationality to align. I think they do it to cause passengers to lose their flights.

I hope that you salvage at least some of your trip.

Itsgoingtobeagloriousday · 21/05/2026 13:04

If I lived close to the airport I would still go and try too. You will be fine coming back to the UK. It is an easy mistake to make! I’m generally organised and would class myself as fairly well travelled but I didn’t realise till last year that some countries require 6 months (I always assumed it was 3-4!). We went to Turkey for the first time and daughter’s passport had 4 and a half months left. Still travelled and didnt realise until we landed and it flagged up at Turkish passport control. We had to pay a fee (about £140 I think?) and they stamped something in her passport to allow her entry. The most annoying thing was the time it took to sort tbh. Got to the hotel a couple of hours later than planned but I was just glad we had managed to get there by then.

Potterxoxo · 21/05/2026 13:09

It has been one crazy morning. After reading everyone’s posts ,speaking to the Airline ,and just lots of calculations and thoughts on how to go about this we decided to postpone the holiday to the 14th of June ,that worked financially better for us . It was either that ,or lose the holiday completely, get no refund back .
We are trying to find some sort of resolution in terms of our accommodation and had to pay about £500 for the price difference on the tickets and £60 each for changing the flight and we also fast tracked daughter passport to hopefully arrive in a week .
With about £800 loss ( will have to suffer that when we get back ) we will travel mid of June .
We also need to speak to my daughter’s school and hopefully they understand our situation and authorise enough days for us to miss paying the school fine as that would mean £160 more towards this mistake that’s costing me money I can’t afford to spend . For everyone asking ,it’s me ,daughter 6 and son 2 travelling . Husband cannot travel . Even if he could ,I wouldn’t have been able to leave my daughter behind and holiday without her . Husband having to bring her one week later would cost even more .
All the bookings ,packing ,everything that went towards this trip was done by myself .
Even if my husband was to travel with us this wouldn’t have been any different. The mental load is on me ,always . Husband at least was very understanding and compassionate about my mistake .
I have learned this lesson the hard way ! I will triple check those passports from now on .

Blimey, you're going to need a holiday after all this stress! Hope everything goes smoothly from now on + you have a great time when you get there

Potterxoxo · 21/05/2026 13:14

@Galvanized
I am sorry to disappoint you but my six year old will stay at home with us now and hopefully will fly during school term in three weeks times for her long promised holiday .
While I understand how some people can judge me ( I am judging myself ) I can’t understand how they can be so mean towards a child !

I'm glad you have a way forward, but oh what a nightmare you have had. Hope the passport renewal process is smooth and you have a lovely time when you get there.

Get to a passport office and the premium !
Or, fly out later

Don't be hard on yourself; I have made a very similar mistake with my son's passport. These things happen! Enjoy your holiday. X

Potterxoxo · 21/05/2026 13:24

Thank you so much for all the lovely and kind words everyone . Knowing that people have been in similar situations ,or they understand that mistakes like this can happen to the best of us has made me feel a bit better . My six year old is devastated for not being able to go today ,I will have to do my best cheering her up and making sure she is well entertained this half term .
As to some of the suggestions I couldn’t leave any of my kids behind . I am their primary carer ,literally 24/7 . My husband is great but he is just a sponsor for our family ,bless him that’s what I call him . He works so hard and such long hours ,barely gets anytime with the kids let alone caring for them on his own . My kids would have a really hard time without me ,especially my 2 year old . So we are sticking together and hopefully we still have a great time when we do go .

They Obviously didn’t check or they wouldn’t be in this situation. Stop asking stupid questions

Don’t be rude, absolutely no need. Thank you.

At the point of booking a holiday, you check your passports. Then this doesn’t happen.

I think we’ve all got that take home message, thanks.

GingerBeverage · 21/05/2026 13:33

Glad you have salvaged most of the cost.

Multiplenames10 · 21/05/2026 13:33

So sorry this happened, please don't be hard on yourself and try and do something nice together as a family tonight/this weekend. Hopefully after some good sleep this will all feel a little better, and you'll get to enjoy your trip in a few weeks time.

nauticant · 21/05/2026 13:33

Well done OP in rescuing the situation, although it'll cost a fair bit.

Good luck with getting a sympathetic hearing with the school.

Wordsmithery · 21/05/2026 13:36

Just wanted to wish you luck OP and I hope everything does fall into place. Don't beat yourself up too much. We all make mistakes especially when we're frazzled, overworked, tired, juggling. Even the most judgey of MN judges on here make mistakes but they'd probably never admit it...

Jane143 · 21/05/2026 13:39

Can you get emergency appointment at Passport office?
