Blooming heck. Happy birthday 🫠

That’s been everyone’s reaction!! His birthday was in Feb but is at Uni and I work in a school so first chance we’ve had to go away. It’s what he wanted to do, appreciate it’s a bit random! We are doing other stuff too!

DrMadelineMaxwell · 28/03/2026 15:48

Salou.

Haven't been for 10 years.

Dr13Hadley · 28/03/2026 16:52

We’re off to Murcia in Spain to visit family. It’ll be nice to get a bit more consistent sun and warmth!

I'm going away by train, ON MY OWN 🥳 I've got an Interrail pass.

SW UK- London- Paris (night in Paris)- Nice- Ventimiglia- local train up into the hills, where I will be staying in an eco village. Looks amazing! Then 4 days hiking up mountains, down to the sea and visiting various stunning looking villages (and eating lots of French and Italian good things) before making my way back to Nice via a scenic mountain railway for the sleeper train to Paris, and back home the next day.

This sounds like an amazing adventure. How did you start about planning that. 🤨

mizu · 28/03/2026 19:41

DD2 and I are currently in Cairo visiting DD1 who is on her year abroad here. Having the best time.

mizu · 28/03/2026 19:42

@therockingbird that sounds amazing! I went away on my own last Feb half term to a country I had lived in 20 years before and it felt like such an adventure.

I am obsessed with making imaginary journeys on Google Maps, some of which make it into reality. And sometimes random things just pop out at you- that's how I found the ecovillage.

Trainwise, Interrail passes are great, and seat61.com is a great source of information.

He wanted to visit the site of a genocide for his birthday celebration?

Not that it’s anything at all to do with you but he wanted to go away for his birthday instead of receiving presents and he picked Krakow. While we are there he asked if we could go to Auschwitz. It’s an important piece of history and we won’t be going back to Krakow again so he wanted to see it as do thousands and thousands of people each year. It’s no different from going to the 9/11 museum in New York which we have also done as it’s also an important part of history. Or do you think these significant events should just be swept under the carpet and not talked about??
Genuinely do not understand people’s thought processes on here, it would be ok for him to go on a lads holiday for his birthday , get drunk and go clubbing (which he does plenty of at Uni!) buf he’s judged for wanting to go away with me and his brother for a city break to visit an important piece of history.

DappledThings · 29/03/2026 07:40

Just a few days in a local caravan park as a short break.

Delighted to see how many people have responded to point out there is no such thing as Easter half-term.

I went last month. The scale of it blew me away, you read about it but seeing it is different. I also found the Schindler Museum really interesting.

We are! We were meant to be going to Sri Lanka but we had to cancel it as it was going through Dubai. So now we’re going to Seville and Malaga. Really looking forward to a change of scenery!

We did this one Easter (plus Cordoba- really worth a trip on the train.) It’s a wonderful time to visit and the Holy Week parades are incredible. Enjoy- you are in for a real treat!

I’m taking DS1, DS2 and me to Krakow to visit Auschwitz for DS1 21st Birthday.

We are just back. Didn’t visit Auschwitz as DS is only 14 but I heartily recommend the Scindler factory (get a tour if you can) and a walking tour of the Jewish quarter. The lovely Easter market is also on the the town square. I hope you have a great visit.

DH and I went there a few years ago. Krakow is lovely and I'm very glad we visited Auschwitz. Enjoyed would be the wrong word but it was very moving and worthwhile.

I went at that age. It inspired me to take History for A Level and I have been a couple of times since with others.

JuliettaCaeser · 29/03/2026 08:54

Can’t imagine why anyone would want to go there. Close family members have been god knows why. Blows mind. I had to walk out of the Anne Frank museum I literally couldn’t bear it.

TutTutTutSigh · 29/03/2026 08:58

Marrakech and the Atlas mountains. Child free as dd is going away with her dad. Can't bloody wait.

Thank you, yes we’ve booked Schindlers Museum as well. Our hotel is right near Heroes Square so it’s close by.
I was a bit worried about taking DS2 as he’s 15 but he has a good understanding of it as they’ve studied the Holocaust at school and he feels it’s important to go as well.

Thank you. I know it’s going to be really tough going but I just couldn’t go to Krakow and not go. It’s so important to keep history alive especially for our young people.

Appreciate that but if nobody goes then history is forgotten. Anne Frank especially wrote her diary so the whole world would know what she went through, it shouldn’t be brushed under the carpet.

We are! Was meant to be Doha! But it’s cancelled and planning Crete or Malaga
