Would you travel to Egypt at the moment?

Looking for some thoughts on this.

Am due to travel to Egypt in a couple of weeks, I know all the advice at the moment is that Egypt is safe. However- I am travelling with two young children and concerns around the airspace, potential delays (more worrying about being out there and not being able to fly home!) are really concerning me.

If I wasn’t travelling with young DCs I might be a bit more relaxed. But I am struggling to feel excited about this trip with all that’s happening.

We have booked through Thomas Cook and it appears we can amend the booking for a fee, plus any other fees associated with travelling elsewhere.

Thoughts?

Love Egypt. But no, not now.

IndigoIsMyFavouriteColour · 06/03/2026 18:55

I would go, there’s no American armed force bases in Egypt so unlikely to be targeted

Rhodesbride · 06/03/2026 18:56

We are due to fly on 26th march for 10nights and will still be going.

BorgQueen · 06/03/2026 19:10

It’s not the fact of Eygpt potentially being attacked by Iranian drones, it’s the possibility of Terrorist cells attacking Tourist sites full of Westerners.

A repeat of the 1996 Hatshepsut’s Temple massacre, a bombing at The Pyramids or the new Egyptian Museum in Giza is probably their perfect idea of revenge.

The US have advised all of their citizens to vacate Egypt.

No there’s a reason certain destinations like Egypt are cheaper. I wouldn’t even have gone there a couple of years ago. It’s so sad as it looks amazing.

Thedogscollar · 06/03/2026 19:41

Nothing about Egypt appeals to me and I'd say even less so now.

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 06/03/2026 19:44

Don't blame you for deciding not to go, OP. I wouldn't right now either. Hope you manage to transfer the booking to another destination.

Do you have a source for that?

The US Embassy in Egypt website dated 4 Mar still shows Level 2 (increased Caution) with no travel to certain areas - much the same as the UK advice.

I don't think I'm going to any muslim majority country ever again.

Your loss!

A friend of a friend (who i got chatting to at a party) worked in govt intelligence and advised me to avoid the middle East about 10 years ago. He included Turkey, Egypt, Saudi etc and said he'd never holiday there because of risks. It's stayed with me and I'd never go there. He also said North Africa was unstable. I have visited Morocco since but Tbh that whole band of countries is now off my list of holiday destinations. Plenty of other places to go

The millions of people who have been and returned 100% intact since then means that this "friend of a friend" nonsense smells...off. That's not how people working in intelligence operate.

BorgQueen · 06/03/2026 17:12

Not a chance, purely for the risk of a major terrorist attack at tourist sites.
I’m even a bit concerned about going to London for a few days at Easter because we’re taking our Grandson.

This is no way to live.

CrystalGaze · 06/03/2026 20:08

It's not a place I've ever felt an urge to visit at the best of times, to be honest - but I especially wouldn't fancy going there now.

connie26 · 06/03/2026 20:08

Sorry to hijack but what about Cyprus? Due to fly to Paphos on 29th..

JSMill · 06/03/2026 20:09

Erin1975 · 05/03/2026 18:16

I would go. Egypt is 1500 miles away from Iran and unlikely to be a target for any missiles.

First sensible post. Cairo is almost 2,500 km from Tehran. I have never seen anyone on MN doubt they should be travelling to Budapest or Vienna or Berlin, yet these cities are far closer to an active war zone. Also, Egypt has never agreed to allow American airbases which is a big part of the reason the Emirates, Qatar and Bahrain are under attack.

WhineAndWine1 · 06/03/2026 20:10

We went when Israel started with Palestine in the November and it was fine. I would go now but I can’t stand the place so will never step foot in the country again.

Changedname9999 · 06/03/2026 20:27

I went there 15 years ago with my daughter. Would never go again 1st time we had so lovely a time. Snorkelling and diving on reefs. 2nd time was when you weren't allowed to put a foot in water. Sharks. Not many people remember that. Myself and daughter did leave the resort one day and it was madly threatening. We went back and absolutely just stayed on resort. It was just after the massacre in Tunisia. I was thinking of that. We couldn't snorkel or do any of the things we liked and I was constantly worrying about massacres. I'll not go back.

Changedname9999 · 06/03/2026 20:31

Tbh the people are not very nice and obviously madly misogynistic. I have other stories. Obviously also therefore all the women are not seen.

Zov · 06/03/2026 20:39

Quite honestly I wouldn't travel anywhere at the moment. (Out of the UK.) DH and I have only got a holiday booked within the UK this year, and I couldn't be more glad.

A neighbour of mine has a holiday booked to Cyprus in mid March, and as it stands she is still going. Booked it herself (no travel agent) and just booked the hotel and plane tickets separately, and she hasn't taken any insurance out, so she will lose all the money. She will lose more if she gets standed over there for weeks on end, (and has to pay a fortune for what will be vastly overpriced hotel rooms!)

I mean it's not super close to Iran, but it is too close for comfort. Like Egypt is! It depends where in Egypt of course, but it's roughly the same distance as Cyprus.

I sat in a mosque in Cairo with Egyptian guide and my daughter and he was saying all the women have to sit over there he pointed to an enclosure. I said why can't you all sit together and he said if they were with us we would have to have sex with them. I didn't say much after that.

Changedname9999 · 06/03/2026 20:44

It was 15 years ago. We saw the Cairo museum which was amazing and flew back to sharm.on way back we were to give out tips. It was significant amount. My daughter said we split it equally with the driver. Noone ever argued with my daughter I'm so proud. Out Egyptian expert guide has to split it with the really lovely driver.

😱

I can't believe this kind of thing still goes on, ANYWHERE in the world.

In 2026!

Awful!

RedRec · 06/03/2026 20:45

I wouldn't have gone there even before all this.

I’m obviously not a political correspondent or any kind of expert, but I’ve seen a number of articles like this online…

Egypt fumes over hits to tourism by US Depart Now warning amid Iran war

Egypt has been immune from Iranian retaliation, partly because the North African state is not home to any US or foreign military bases.
