Would you travel to Egypt at the moment?

Looking for some thoughts on this.

Am due to travel to Egypt in a couple of weeks, I know all the advice at the moment is that Egypt is safe. However- I am travelling with two young children and concerns around the airspace, potential delays (more worrying about being out there and not being able to fly home!) are really concerning me.

If I wasn’t travelling with young DCs I might be a bit more relaxed. But I am struggling to feel excited about this trip with all that’s happening.

We have booked through Thomas Cook and it appears we can amend the booking for a fee, plus any other fees associated with travelling elsewhere.

Thoughts?

Definitely not.

Merkins · 05/03/2026 18:00

Not a chance.

Not even if it was for free.

Especially not with kids.

TheGirlWhoLived · 05/03/2026 18:03

Not even a tiny chance would I travel to Egypt. Sorry!

I wouldn’t travel there normally to be honest!

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 05/03/2026 18:06

If you're anxious, then don't go.

I would, but I don't have kids to worry about.

JustChillin70 · 05/03/2026 18:06

I would without kids

Crabwoman · 05/03/2026 18:12

I've been to Egypt a few times and with my kids. Absolutely no chance would I go at the moment!

CeeceeBloomingdale · 05/03/2026 18:13

No

Erin1975 · 05/03/2026 18:16

I would go. Egypt is 1500 miles away from Iran and unlikely to be a target for any missiles.

I wouldn't go with young children. On my own or with friends I probably would as would happily sleep in a hostel / cheap hotel if flights got grounded again. If you don't have travel insurance yet I imagine you'll be paying a lot more for it than normal. If you can I'd change your booking as its too volatile and I wouldn't wait to see if it's going to blow over x

Yes. I don't see how that affects any decision.

ScrollingLeaves · 05/03/2026 18:19

What does the Foreign Office say?

DorisTheFinkasaurus · 05/03/2026 18:20

You know, I am the first to think, "We'll probably be fine!"
Not in this case.
This war is escalating and expanding at a rate of knots.
If the US is urging its people to leave Egypt, that's enough of a 'nope' in itself.
It's too risky, OP.

WinterCarlisle · 05/03/2026 18:24

No. And 100% not with children

Not with little kids.

thegoldensun · 05/03/2026 18:27

Foreign office isn’t saying it’s a do not travel zone to the tourist resorts. However I know how quickly things can escalate and change. And the US has apparently issued guidance to people to leave Egypt.

The thought of being stranded out there with young children just terrifies me. I’m glad I’m not overreacting from reading your responses

Yes. I don't see how that affects any decision.

Because any normal parent doesn't want to put their child in a possibly dangerous situation (especially when the actual word "war" is involved). Because if it all goes tits up, it's easier to sleep on the floor of an airport for days and queue up for food/water etc without kids. I mean, every day life is easier and less stressful without kids, so I don't know why you can't work this one out.

Egypt is challenging at the best of times, but especially with children. I'm talking tummy troubles, strange food, heat and in certain places a lack of food hygiene and hygiene overall. It is what it is. Fascinating country but ideally for adults to cruise down the Nile and see the temples/pyramids etc. Maybe that's what you are doing...

When I was there some years ago, it was scary even then. We had a military escort through the desert to get from Luxor to the coast. I am not ashamed to say I was a bit scared that a terrorist convoy was going to appear over the mountains and kill us all.

I think I'd avoid anywhere that has had terrorist attacks on tourists in the past, and that includes Egypt. I am probably over reacting, but honestly if I could change the holiday with no sanctions, I'd do that in the current climate.

Agreed. She really can't be a parent surely.
