Would you travel to Egypt at the moment?

Looking for some thoughts on this.

Am due to travel to Egypt in a couple of weeks, I know all the advice at the moment is that Egypt is safe. However- I am travelling with two young children and concerns around the airspace, potential delays (more worrying about being out there and not being able to fly home!) are really concerning me.

If I wasn’t travelling with young DCs I might be a bit more relaxed. But I am struggling to feel excited about this trip with all that’s happening.

We have booked through Thomas Cook and it appears we can amend the booking for a fee, plus any other fees associated with travelling elsewhere.

Thoughts?

@thegoldensun we could have cancelled at 14 days prior and lost 90% of the money but decided to hang on in case FCDO change advice and we get a refund. Getting back 10% although potentially better than nothing is still a fraction of what we have paid. If we cancel now we lose all the money. No option to change to anything else without also sacrificing 90 or 100%. So sad but understand it's the rules. Travel insurance doesn't cover us either.

To visit the pyramid is my goal.

DoloresDelEriba · 12/03/2026 05:44

No. Not sure your insurance would cover you either.

I do t think I’d enjoy the holiday if I went, I’d be anxious about the war and getting g home and not properly relax. Based on that alone I would change it because I want to feel relaxed on holiday.

As long as the FCO says it’s safe to travel, you are covered by insurance.

I arrived sunday in Hurghada. It is as lovely as ever. Egypt has nothing to do with the war.

Booked yesterday for Hurgarda and go in four weeks - I'm really not worried as the fco haven't changed their advice re travel there for years. Can't wait for some sunshine

we were in Hurghada at the beginning of the month and had no issues at all. I would happily go back again

my sister spent the whole time we were away messaging me and asking if we were going to be able to get home!
It was fine, there was never any mention of the possibility of us not getting home. My first time in Egypt and I really enjoyed it.

No way especially with children. An added complication on the horizon is the potential shortage of aviation fuel and resulting cancellations.

LesLavandes · 19/03/2026 11:37

You need to check with your insurance

I have been in Hurghada almost 2 weeks, leaving sunday. Had a great trip to Luxor, Valley of the Kings etc - everything is as lovely as always and again : egypt is not part of the war.

I know Egypt is an acquired taste but whenever going there get's mentioned on MN you can hear the sucking of teeth followed by ..."reasons": war, missiles etc...etc...etc...and that been since before POTUS kicked things off earlier this month.

Places in India such as Delhi are as close to the current conflict as Hurghada, and have another conflict much closer to being on their doorstep, but when travel there gets mentioned barely an eyebrow gets raised..

All a bit odd sometimes.
