Have I paid too much?

In a nutshell I fly to lanzarote this Monday with my DH and 2 children. We are doing 5 nights in a complex and it's cost just under 4.5k. Does this seem extortionate? Or the norm these days? It's also completely self catering. I can't help but feel it's a waste of money and I could have got somewhere nicer/better? What have u all booked abroad these summer holidays?

Literally bugger all you can do about it
so just 🤷‍♀️ and look forward to imminent holiday

Duvetcover01 · 14/08/2025 09:29

Well I'm staying at an AI in spain next week for £3,300 for 2 adults and 2 dcs so yes, it does seem a lot to me for sc but I would expect the complex is classier than where I am staying(!)

Someiremember · 14/08/2025 09:32

Ah

having seen your posting history, this isn’t you is it? You are judging your friend who you think is “blase with money”

Leave her alone fgs!!

Mrsttcno1 · 14/08/2025 09:33

For 5 nights self catering in Lanzarote you’ve been well and truly ripped off but there’s nothing you can do about it now.

We have done 8 nights in Cyprus, 4 star hotel All Inclusive for just over £3000.

BrunchBarBandit · 14/08/2025 09:33

That does sound a lot. Flights for 4 of you would be about £2k so you’re paying 500 a night for accommodation. We’ve just paid 500 a night for a 4 bed villa with a pool in the balkans with a second week in a 2 bed apartment with shared pool in a different location for £200 a night. SC but we mostly eat out.

I guess it depends what sort of holiday you want but I always figure that flights in the school holidays are so expensive it’s hard to justify going away for less than a week.

LifeOfAShowGirl · 14/08/2025 09:33

Jesus Christ yes. £900 a night for a self catering holiday is ridiculous. You could’ve done it for a grand through Airbnb.

It’s not the op

she’s judging her “blase about money friend” she has a problem with

Either way, £4.5k on a trip to lanzarote is well and truly insane

Wow that’s disingenuous.

I regret wasting my time answering the OP

It depends what the 'complex' is like. It could be hugely luxurious, high end, private pool.. No screaming kids, crap buffets or watered down cocktails. Maybe the flights are business class. Maybe getting a taxi to the airport.

I paid £3.5 k for a villa holiday last year, self catering, just for 2 of us. It rained every single day so that really was a waste of money.

My dream holiday I can't afford is on a 'complex'. Huge villa right in the beach, own pool but you can also use the shared pools. Self catering but there are high end restaurants on site. £900 a night.

Even in the UK you can pay huge amounts. Carbis Bay Hotel have a row of houses on the beach with hot tubs that are £600 a night.

indoorplantqueen · 14/08/2025 09:46

Yes that’s a rip off! How much were the flights? Even in peak season I doubt more than £500 each. So 2.5k for accommodation, so £500 per night! Is it the ritz?

Comedycook · 14/08/2025 09:46

Seems a lot for five nights but not particularly outlandish....I assume it's a very nice complex...4 or 5 star?

Most package hols I see in nice hotels during school holidays seems to come in at about that price but it's usually for a full week.

Edited to add... didn't see you were self catering?! I assumed it was full board or all inclusive for that price. Yes that does seem a bit pricey for sc.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 14/08/2025 09:55

Why are you so involved in your friend’s life?

I wouldn’t pay that. I dislike lanzarote. Perhaps they don’t want tell you they got a bargain or a going to a shit hole so u pled the price. Or they are paying it, can afford it and it’s actually nothing to do with you.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 14/08/2025 10:03

In April, you claimed never to go abroad on holiday. If this is some weird reverse, what a waste of everyone’s time. Perhaps focus on your own life rather than someone else’s?

smugmugg · 14/08/2025 10:04

4.5k for 5 nights with a 4 hr flight plus travel? way too much for too little imo.

It’s a bitter OP slyly judging her friend and wanting others to join her

Ballardz · 14/08/2025 10:08

We are paying £8.5k for 7 nights in Greece, but we have gone for a nice resort.

It really depends on what sort of resort you are going to.

Oh. Dammit. I fell for it.

Crikeyalmighty · 14/08/2025 10:09

We did 10 nights in posher bits of Majorca in top end boutique hotels ( Band B) for £2850 including flights - but only the 2 of us - I do think you have hugely overpaid yes unless it’s incredibly high end accommodation - but I do think people forget that flights these days can be close to £400 each anywhere in a tourist area at decent times and children are full price unless on a package with cheap child places-particularly from certain regional airports - Bristol is our closest but I could often fly for a third less from Heathrow or Gatwick but then have to factor in fuel and significant airport parking too rather than a £50 cab each way

Ballardz · 14/08/2025 10:15

Just looked at OP’s posting history.

Yep, this isn’t about you is it. Unless your husband suddenly changed his mind and agreed to a holiday abroad this year and seeing as there are two children going, you are leaving one behind.

Daboomboom · 14/08/2025 10:18

It's booked now. Does it matter?

It could have been a bargain, it could leave you in debt for 2years, it's done.

Just enjoy it.

Chewbecca · 14/08/2025 10:44

It's a lot.

Hopefully it's fabulous accomodation.

Sometimes we spend loads on holidays too. Sometimes we go on very cheap ones. Both are always great.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 14/08/2025 10:53

It does seem wildly expensive for 5 nights self-catering, but presumably you were happy with what you paid after doing all the shopping around. So you've got what you wanted at a price you were happy with.

I think it's normal to get buyer's regret when we've forked out a lot of money for something. But you'll enjoy your hols, I imagine it's something pretty special.

Zempy · 14/08/2025 11:04

Why are you so obsessed with your friends holidays?

titchy · 14/08/2025 11:08

Frankly I’d rather pay that for a nice classy resort and self cater than go for a cheapo AI.

Your friend has class and taste OP. You do not. Just in case that wasn’t clear from the fact that you’re posting a really nasty bitchy post about her.
