What the hell is the point in vegan fish and chips? Confused

If it’s halloumi count me in. Battered cheese. Be still my beating fanny 🤤

As expected, the anti-vegan crowd have appeared.

There's nothing wrong with wanting a meat or fish substitute. It doesn't hurt anyone, and more importantly, nothing gets killed. Calling it 'vegan fish' communicates exactly what the desired stuff is like - it's not meant to be literal.

Here's a chippy in Scarborough that does vegan stuff

I like most of the vegetarian food that I have tried, I'm not sure if I've ever tried vegan food.

But it was called what it was. I wouldn't eat vegan bacon, vegan chicken etc just on general principle. Because it's dishonest. Vegetarians/Vegans should have the courage of their convictions and call their food what it actually is. And it shouldn't be designed to imitate meat at all.

Not this BS. Do you actually believe it yourself?

Nobody actually believes that vegan bacon is real bacon.

People who choose not to eat meat for animal welfare reasons may still miss the taste and texture of meat. They are allowed to, how scandalous!! The "courage of their convictions" is that animals shouldn't be killed for their food, not that nobody should enjoy the taste of bacon!

Disgusting.Bleeeeuch.

How often do vegans come onto threads asking about meat dishes and say pathetic shit like this?

CatsnCoffee · 12/08/2025 19:22

Me too! There’s a chip shop at the beach closest to me which caters surprisingly well for vegans eg vegan sausage in batter, vegan burgers and vegan-labelled curry sauce, but no vegan fish!
It’s not ideal, but have you thought of taking your own, prior-cooked vegan fish in batter from Aldi, wrapped in paper. You could still buy chips at the beach to have with them.
Btw, for those asking why vegan fish? And what is vegan fish?- being vegan doesn’t mean you dislike the flavour and texture of meat and/or fish. However, you’re willing to sacrifice your tastes for the sake of the animals. Therefore, you’re happy to eat a cruelty-free alternative. Vegan fish is usually made from banana blossom or tofu.

Oh, 100% battered halloumi and chips is better than battered fish!

QuaverQuanta · 12/08/2025 19:25

I love how upset non-vegans get when no one even asked their opinion. And people say vegans are preachy 🤣

There’s no beach nearby unfortunately but if you are ever in Glasgow, go to the restaurant Mono. They do Tof-ish and chips with mushy peas and tartare sauce. It’s delicious!

I had to reread that, I thought it said battered fanny and was thinking WTF??

Do you realise there never were toads in this dish?

That’s my point!
you can make it with meat, veggie or vegan sausages and it still doesn’t contain toad 😀
the fun I had explaining this dish to my South African friend!

RudithJudith · 12/08/2025 19:35

Bloody hell, don't know why you're getting a hard time but I recommend Elliot's Fish and Chips in Hunstanton. Right on the beach, parking nearby and they sell loads of vegan items on their extensive menu so something suitable for most, whatever your dietary choices

JambonetFromage · 12/08/2025 19:35

I’m a meat eater but have eaten Tof-ish and it’s surprisingly good as a fish substitute.

What has fish to do with carnivores? I come for a culture where many foods are naturally vegan, we call them the food they are, not a make belief thing. Some people hate fish and would love an alternative street food of the chippy, why should they order vegan fish if the plant it is sounds more palatable?

I can't help but be reminded of a stroppy toddler.

Did these naturally vegan foods originate for their own sake or to replace a meat dish? Because there's loads of vegan food in the UK that has no label relating to meat or fish. Those that do tend to be direct replacements. Just like the Chinese mock meats that have been mentioned on this thread. Plenty of naturally vegan Chinese dishes, but mock duck is meant to be a duck substitute in a way that e.g. broccoli isn't.

For anyone who has grown up with fish and chips, vegan fish and chips is immediately comprehensible.

Who's being stroppy?

I want won't get.

That aside, it sounds too silly. Perhaps bring a carrot to and some chick peas to nibble on?

Is it the image of fish and chips you're after? As in that's what "one does" at the seaside? Or is it for insta? I don't get it. There must be some very nice fresh vegan foods, why fake the foods you have absconded from?

Sounds like you want your vegan cake and eat it.

It’s catered for and a real thing. I’m not vegan but I really don’t understand why you would be so rude to someone who is, and posting for advice - and if you climb down off your high horse, you’d see she’s had quite a few suggestions.

You can’t see it but I’m giving you a standing ovation. And I’m not vegan !!

Last time I went to Brighton I saw on the seafront they had a vegan fish and chip shop. It looked nice but we didn't get chance to try it.

MaJoady · 12/08/2025 17:12

I never understand why terms like "vegan fish" are used. I'd rather know what I'm eating, whether it's tofu, jackfruit or whatever.

I agree - I'd probably eat far more vegan food if it was obvious what it was. I've no idea when it's "ch*cken" or whatever.

AlexisP90 · 12/08/2025 19:48

I have many vegan friends and cater for them and when we have had fish and chips I've just done them chips and or something else. Im not sure what you mean by vegan fish? Vegan fish doesnt exist?

I dont want to cause offense but this vegan bacon/chicken/fish thing seems a bit silly to me. If you choose not to eat those things totally ok but just have something else surely?

OonaStubbs · 12/08/2025 19:48

What about the fishermen who catch fish for us to eat? What are they going to do if everyone starts eating vegan "fish"?

There is usually a more detailed description below as with most menu items or you could just ask.

The thing is the Ch*ckn and the like are made out of all sorts of random crap that don’t really sound good on a menu. If it’s battered banana blossom, jackfruit or artichoke then the menu usually says that.

Why should they eat something else when they want battered banana blossom/tofu that’s deep fried and served with chips?

TheGrimSmile · 12/08/2025 19:50

I had some at a festival once and it was bloody delicious but I can't remember the company that did it. I've got a feeling that it was the same one that has the shop on the seafront in Brighton. I think I googled it at the time.
