How on earth so many of you survived the days of Bombay duck without spontaneously combusting, I will never know.

Can’t believe the comments on here!
let’s not even go there with Toad in the Hole 😆

Where on the UK are you?

It doesn't matter where in the uk op is, as she requests to know where anywhere in the Uk she can get battered vegan food by a beach - she must be willing to travel anywhere in the UK to pursue this food craving, so could be taking the train, cycle, car, ferry or by air travel, distance and carbon footprint of no concern seemingly. The main things is to get battered vegan food and eat it on the beach.

Shakey Shakey Fish Bar in Ramsgate. Really fantastic!

Do you realise there never were toads in this dish?

Vegan fish should be banned. Fish should only be real fish that comes from the sea or river. Vegan fish is an oxymoron.

You should definitely start a campaign for this. Put all your attention and effort into it.

hexsnidgett · 12/08/2025 18:59

I have been vegetarian for 30 odd years, no-one ever asked my opinion on what to call products, personally I would prefer things not to be called things like "vegan bacon" but "savory breakfast slices" or whatever.
My point is, there's no point blaming the op, for how things are named.

deydododatdodontdeydo · 12/08/2025 18:59

Often they call it fsh, so as not to offend the snowflakes who can't fathom "vegan fish".

I know.😆😆😆

I came to answer the OP. I stayed for the crazy anti-vegan frothing.🍿

I like most of the vegetarian food that I have tried, I'm not sure if I've ever tried vegan food.

But it was called what it was. I wouldn't eat vegan bacon, vegan chicken etc just on general principle. Because it's dishonest. Vegetarians/Vegans should have the courage of their convictions and call their food what it actually is. And it shouldn't be designed to imitate meat at all.

Ednafrommooneyponds · 12/08/2025 19:01

@introfun As has already been pointed out to you, not all vegans are vegans for environmental reasons so bore off with your inane repetitive babble.

Volturra · 12/08/2025 19:01

Where would we be without people who point out that fish isn't vegan?

First time I had 'vegan fish and chips' the label gave me some idea of what the idea was. 'Deep-fried banana blossom' would have been more mysterious as I'd never had or even seen banana blossom before. Anybody worrying about the dishonesty of vegan fish purveyors can rest assured that the description made clear that this was what the 'fish' was.

Very nice it was too.

Twitcheye · 12/08/2025 19:02

And it shouldn't be designed to imitate meat at all.
why? Lots of vegans do want similar foods to what they used to eat, I don’t think that’s a crazy concept at all.

Ednafrommooneyponds · 12/08/2025 19:03

@OonaStubbs Fine. As long as you're prepared to start describing all meat-based food exactly as it is. Examples already given up thread. Enjoy your coagulated pigs blood. Doesn't sound quite as catchy as black pudding does it?

Bombil is the local name for the fish, Bombay duck is a colonial appropriation based on mispronunciation and cultural misunderstanding during the British Raj. Not the best example, Bombay duck as a food name was always problematic.

One for the hard of thinking

It's not even new. Chinese Buddhists have been knocking out fake meat for about 1000 years. If you've a decent Chinese wholesaler you can find all manner of pretend meats and fish.

It's only dishonest if people genuinely aren't aware of what the food is.

Why 'should' they? And why 'shouldn't' it?

What harm is actually being done? And why the hell do you care?

I know why it’s called that thank you. As others have said many dishes have names that do not accurately describe what they are yet no one is frothing at the mouth over toad in the hole.

introfun · 12/08/2025 17:18

How far are you willing to drive in your presumably electric car? Please be mindful of your carbon footprint while chasing after that faux F&C.

Adding new items to a F&C shop, sounds like a good idea, battering flowers is interesting but why call it a pretend name? Why not banana flower and quinoa? Why not be real? Is it to have the word vegan in your meal choice? O is it to minimise the feeling of missing out? Interesting psychology.

Edited

Who pissed on your chips? Because it wasn't the vegans.

People want a vegan alternative to something that is inherently not vegan. Pack it in with the pedantry.

Dishonest? It literally says vegan in the name and there’s usually a more detailed description below. You are not going to be tricked into eating vegan fish and chips on a menu.

And I am quite sure that you have tried vegan food unless you have never eaten fruit, vegetables, beans, most bread, dried pasta, rice etc.

Figsaregood · 12/08/2025 19:08

Chesil Chippie, Portland is right next to Chesil Beach, Weymouth. They have a great vegan menu including vegan calamari, vegan nuggets and of course, vegan fish and chips.

If you are in Northumberland I can recommend the Old Boathouse in Amble.

Can someone tell me how to process fresh banana blossoms I have loads of bananas and typically I cut the blossom off and compost it when the bunch is big enough. They are quite hefty and would probably make quite a good meal. Do you have to take the baby bananas out of the petals?
