There is usually a more detailed description below as with most menu items or you could just ask.

I was thinking more in the supermarket etc. - and when I've asked out, the bar staff have just shrugged and said 'it's a meat alternative'!

The places that describe it upfront I'll often give it a try if it sounds decent - had some great vegan ice cream in a restaurant once.

It doesn't matter where in the uk op is, as she requests to know where anywhere in the Uk she can get battered vegan food by a beach - she must be willing to travel anywhere in the UK to pursue this food craving, so could be taking the train, cycle, car, ferry or by air travel, distance and carbon footprint of no concern seemingly. The main things is to get battered vegan food and eat it on the beach.

How dare she forget the vegan travel ban!

PrettyPickle · 12/08/2025 19:51

Ooh, interesting question but you don't state where you are, so on the assumption its England, here goes:

  1. Beach Buoys – Margate Located right on Marine Drive, this spot offers a creative vegan twist on the classic chippy. Margate’s artsy vibe and beach views make it a perfect pairing for plant-based seaside indulgence.
  2. Seabreeze – Redcar A highly rated takeaway on Lobster Road (yes, really!), Seabreeze serves up vegan-friendly options with traditional charm. Redcar’s long beach and pier make it a lovely day out.
  3. Elliots Fish & ChipsHunstanton Nestled on South Promenade, this place is known for its quality and offers vegan choices. Hunstanton’s sunsets and coastal walks are a bonus.
  4. Saving Nemo – Leeds OK so while its not seaside, it’s worth noting for inland vegan fish and chips. It’s a fully vegan restaurant with ocean-themed dishes.
If you’re up for exploring further, places like Brighton, Falmouth, and Whitley Bay also have excellent vegan chippies, including The No Catch Co and Fisherman’s Bay.

Why do non-vegans get so touchy? Is it the guilty conscience? It's just so bizarre.

If it’s in the supermarket then read the description and ingredients list. It’s usually pretty easy to find.

In a restaurant then ask the staff if it isn’t listed on the menu(It almost always is) and if they’re vague about it then eat elsewhere.

I like most of the vegetarian food that I have tried, I'm not sure if I've ever tried vegan food.

But it was called what it was. I wouldn't eat vegan bacon, vegan chicken etc just on general principle. Because it's dishonest. Vegetarians/Vegans should have the courage of their convictions and call their food what it actually is. And it shouldn't be designed to imitate meat at all.

It's not the vegans or vegetarians who decide on the names you utter tool. It's food manufacturing companies/restaurants/marketing people who do that. I've been vegetarian for about 40 years and not once have I ever been consulted on what food is called. While I much prefer beans and pulses to the substitutes for meats or fish I don't especially care what my food is called. If a bean fritter is called the galloping trots I'd still bloody eat it. If you have a problem with the names I suggest you direct your antagonism towards those that name these products not those that eat them.

What about the fishermen who catch fish for us to eat? What are they going to do if everyone starts eating vegan "fish"?

First of all no one is making all the people who do eat fish stop eating fish and start eating alternatives.

Secondly, why are you so worried about the fishermen? There’s more yoga teachers in the U.K. than fishermen. Perhaps they could all retrain?

I think it’s a bit sweeping to include all non-vegans.

I’m not a vegan and recommended a great Fish & Chip in Llandudno with a comprehensive vegan menu.

I don’t understand the us versus them mentality.

Why would "everyone" start eating vegan fish? Have they made actual fish illegal and no one told me?

They are usually vague because it’s whatever they could buy from the wholesaler rather than something the chef has made.

I have been vegetarian for 30 odd years, no-one ever asked my opinion on what to call products, personally I would prefer things not to be called things like "vegan bacon" but "savory breakfast slices" or whatever.
My point is, there's no point blaming the op, for how things are named.

Out of interest may I ask you why you feel like this?

Fair enough if a product is designed to be a vegan slice that can be used in place of bacon but isn't trying to replicate the taste smell or texture of bacon, but all of the vegan bacon products that I can think of, are all trying to give the person eating it an approximation of the taste, look, smell and texture of, well, bacon. So what is the issue with calling it vegan bacon?

Sidenote: I used to be vegetarian 30 odd years ago too, and now just eat mainly vegetarian, but I haven't kept up with fake meat because, well, in my shoes when you're not actually vegetarian if I want bacon I just ate bacon! I recently decided to give being fully vegetarian another go with a view to maybe going fully vegan, and I am gobsmacked by just how much choice there is in the fake meat department! I still don't eat much of it though, because it's all so highly processed, and because somebody finally explained to me how to cook tofu nicely 😂

The infamous 2024 Fish and Fish Products Prohibition Act. Amended earlier this year to make tofu consumption compulsory..Sad times

MatronPomfrey · 12/08/2025 19:59

I had some amazing vegan fish and chips from the Old Boathouse at Amble if you’re ever in Northumberland. Tofu wrapped in nori and in batter.

ManyShapesOfPasta · 12/08/2025 17:18

Some people are vegan and would like to have something similar to the traditional dish.
Sorry your mind is so small you couldn't work that out.

There used to be a Trades Descriptions Act, you couldn't name something incorrectly. Surely fish is the animal that lives in the sea, if people want vegan stuff then call it something else, it's not fish. Hope your mini-mind understands the word 'fish' but on the altar of right-on the minority make their own rules.

It’s catered for and a real thing. I’m not vegan but I really don’t understand why you would be so rude to someone who is, and posting for advice - and if you climb down off your high horse, you’d see she’s had quite a few suggestions.

This poster seems fixated on portraying vegans as tantrumming, irrational toddlers. I particularly like the nannyish "I want won't get", which suggests the logical, meat-eating grown-ups like Introfun are coolly but firmly resisting the unacceptable attempts of petulant vegans to requisition 'their' food names.

Out in the real world, meanwhile, labels like vegan fish are used and understood by carnivores, vegetarians and vegans alike without angst!

Chesil Chippie in Portland (just off Weymouth) does a great banana blossom and other vegan options. The battered samphire is delicious. Right opposite part of chesil beach. It is shingle though. Weymouth beach is sandy but you'd have to drive back.

If you want a sandy beach on Portland near Chesil Chippie (which I was coming on to recommend) Black Barge would be the obvious choice within walking distance.

I think there is a chippy at sea houses which does a vegan fish and chips OP if you’re up in the north east!

Well that is a shame. I actually really like tofu though and eat it most weeks. I'm not even veggie, just like it and if the health benefits are true then its a good thing.

Vegan fish should be banned. Fish should only be real fish that comes from the sea or river. Vegan fish is an oxymoron.

It's a bit of a gobfull saying (or typing) 'Where can I get a vegan alternative to fish that is made in a form of something like fish and chips' though.

Clevedon Pier (The Glass Box) is apparently lovely, we’re not vegan but friends are and highly recommend it. Clevedon seafront is lovely, I grew up a minute or two away and it’s picturesque with a Poets Walk, great bars and restaurants etc etc. Have fun! 🎣

Christ on a bed of Cauliflower, this thread is quite an eyeopener!
Thankyou for this recommendation though, it looks lovely. ❤️ 🌻 ❤️

Is there some sort of Twat Signal that flashes when someone asks for vegan recommendations?
People get very riled about food they are under no obligation to eat, don't they!

Fucking hell, I always thought MN was full of fairly open, educated women, but apparently not, and I've been here 18 years.

There are a few words that seem to bring out the intolerant nutters - vegan is one of them.

Kinda, but also not really. This was fact checked in a R4 programme a few weeks back, either Fact Check, or More or Less. Yoga teachers generally do not all work as yoga teachers and very few do it as a full time earning job, more as a side hustle. So the true numbers in terms of contribution to the UK economy vs fishing industry doesn’t really stack up. Don’t know how yoga teachers compare to tofu manufacturers in UK though. Off to google ONS….

In fairness every time someone asks for a recipe for spaghetti bolognaise or shepherds pie the vegans are right in there asking why people are eating ground up dead animals and making silly comments like ‘yuk’.

That’s a point, shepherds pie, there aren’t that many shepherds left these days.
